The ALMA twenty-six arcmin2 survey of GOODS-S at one millimeter (ASAGAO) is a deep (1σ ∼ 61μJy/beam) and wide area (26 arcmin2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with archival data, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1σ ∼ 30μJy/beam−1, synthesized beam size 0.59″ × 0.53″), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at 5σ, 45 sources at 4.5σ) among ALMA blank-field surveys. The median redshift of the 4.5σ sources is 2.4. The number counts shows that 52% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources. We create IR luminosity functions (LFs) at z = 1–3, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2 < z < 3. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggests a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution.

With the recent discovery of a dozen dusty star-forming galaxies and around 30 quasars at z > 5 that are hyper-luminous in the infrared (μ LIR > 1013 L⊙, where μ is a lensing magnification factor), the possibility has opened up for SPICA, the proposed ESA M5 mid-/far-infrared mission, to extend its spectroscopic studies toward the epoch of reionisation and beyond. In this paper, we examine the feasibility and scientific potential of such observations with SPICA’s far-infrared spectrometer SAFARI, which will probe a spectral range (35–230 μm) that will be unexplored by ALMA and JWST. Our simulations show that SAFARI is capable of delivering good-quality spectra for hyper-luminous infrared galaxies at z = 5 − 10, allowing us to sample spectral features in the rest-frame mid-infrared and to investigate a host of key scientific issues, such as the relative importance of star formation versus AGN, the hardness of the radiation field, the level of chemical enrichment, and the properties of the molecular gas. From a broader perspective, SAFARI offers the potential to open up a new frontier in the study of the early Universe, providing access to uniquely powerful spectral features for probing first-generation objects, such as the key cooling lines of low-metallicity or metal-free forming galaxies (fine-structure and H2 lines) and emission features of solid compounds freshly synthesised by Population III supernovae. Ultimately, SAFARI’s ability to explore the high-redshift Universe will be determined by the availability of sufficiently bright targets (whether intrinsically luminous or gravitationally lensed). With its launch expected around 2030, SPICA is ideally positioned to take full advantage of upcoming wide-field surveys such as LSST, SKA, Euclid, and WFIRST, which are likely to provide extraordinary targets for SAFARI.

IR spectroscopy in the range 12–230 μm with the SPace IR telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) will reveal the physical processes governing the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes through cosmic time, bridging the gap between the James Webb Space Telescope and the upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes at shorter wavelengths and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array at longer wavelengths. The SPICA, with its 2.5-m telescope actively cooled to below 8 K, will obtain the first spectroscopic determination, in the mid-IR rest-frame, of both the star-formation rate and black hole accretion rate histories of galaxies, reaching lookback times of 12 Gyr, for large statistically significant samples. Densities, temperatures, radiation fields, and gas-phase metallicities will be measured in dust-obscured galaxies and active galactic nuclei, sampling a large range in mass and luminosity, from faint local dwarf galaxies to luminous quasars in the distant Universe. Active galactic nuclei and starburst feedback and feeding mechanisms in distant galaxies will be uncovered through detailed measurements of molecular and atomic line profiles. The SPICA’s large-area deep spectrophotometric surveys will provide mid-IR spectra and continuum fluxes for unbiased samples of tens of thousands of galaxies, out to redshifts of z ~ 6.

Our current knowledge of star formation and accretion luminosity at high redshift (z > 3–4), as well as the possible connections between them, relies mostly on observations in the rest-frame ultraviolet, which are strongly affected by dust obscuration. Due to the lack of sensitivity of past and current infrared instrumentation, so far it has not been possible to get a glimpse into the early phases of the dust-obscured Universe. Among the next generation of infrared observatories, SPICA, observing in the 12–350 µm range, will be the only facility that can enable us to trace the evolution of the obscured star-formation rate and black-hole accretion rate densities over cosmic time, from the peak of their activity back to the reionisation epoch (i.e., 3 < z ≲ 6–7), where its predecessors had severe limitations. Here, we discuss the potential of photometric surveys performed with the SPICA mid-infrared instrument, enabled by the very low level of impact of dust obscuration in a band centred at 34 µm. These unique unbiased photometric surveys that SPICA will perform will fully characterise the evolution of AGNs and star-forming galaxies after reionisation.

The physical processes driving the chemical evolution of galaxies in the last ~ 11Gyr cannot be understood without directly probing the dust-obscured phase of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei. This phase, hidden to optical tracers, represents the bulk of the star formation and black hole accretion activity in galaxies at 1 < z < 3. Spectroscopic observations with a cryogenic infrared observatory like SPICA, will be sensitive enough to peer through the dust-obscured regions of galaxies and access the rest-frame mid- to far-infrared range in galaxies at high-z. This wavelength range contains a unique suite of spectral lines and dust features that serve as proxies for the abundances of heavy elements and the dust composition, providing tracers with a feeble response to both extinction and temperature. In this work, we investigate how SPICA observations could be exploited to understand key aspects in the chemical evolution of galaxies: the assembly of nearby galaxies based on the spatial distribution of heavy element abundances, the global content of metals in galaxies reaching the knee of the luminosity function up to z ~ 3, and the dust composition of galaxies at high-z. Possible synergies with facilities available in the late 2020s are also discussed.

A far-infrared observatory such as the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics, with its unprecedented spectroscopic sensitivity, would unveil the role of feedback in galaxy evolution during the last ~10 Gyr of the Universe (z = 1.5–2), through the use of far- and mid-infrared molecular and ionic fine structure lines that trace outflowing and infalling gas. Outflowing gas is identified in the far-infrared through P-Cygni line shapes and absorption blueshifted wings in molecular lines with high dipolar moments, and through emission line wings of fine-structure lines of ionised gas. We quantify the detectability of galaxy-scale massive molecular and ionised outflows as a function of redshift in AGN-dominated, starburst-dominated, and main-sequence galaxies, explore the detectability of metal-rich inflows in the local Universe, and describe the most significant synergies with other current and future observatories that will measure feedback in galaxies via complementary tracers at other wavelengths.

The structure of irradiated material near a primary knock on atom shortly after impact is largely unknown. Molecular dynamics simulations with classical force fields provide the foundation for our current understanding of the resulting cascade. Atomic level structural characterization is often in terms defects within the context of a perfect bulk, however, the choice of the best representation is complicated because the density of defects is high, the material is inhomogeneous and it is not in equilibrium. Here we explore the adaptation of tools typically employed to characterize homogeneous equilibrium liquids to the highly defected region of the cascade. The cascade structure shows some resemblance to that of the liquid or glass phase. The local temperature temporarily exceeds the melting temperature and the free energies of the liquid and defected crystal are comparable. Analysis of cascade structure will be important to the interpretation of first principles calculations of the electronic and magnetic states in cascade structures.

We describe our results on multi-colour observations of extremely red galaxies found in two gravitational lensing clusters (Abell 1835 and AC114). Applying a colour criteria of R-K≥ 5.6 we have selected 12(10) EROs, of which 10(4) have no R-band detection. 5 of these objects have exceptional red colours (R-K>7.5). We compare their colours with other galaxy populations, like distant red galaxies and infrared detected extremely red galaxies, in order to differentiate between them.

We summarise the current status of our project to identify and classify ~ 6-10 galaxies thanks to strong gravitational lensing. Building on the detailed work by Richard et al. (2006), we present results from new follow-up observations undertaken with the ACS/HST and the Spitzer space telescope and compare our results with findings from the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (UDF).

Following up on the detailed results from our searches for z~ 6–10 galaxies using gravitional lensing clusters descrived in Richard et al. (2006), we have obtained new observations, which are presented here. For a general overview of the project see Schaerer et al. (2006). First, deep HST/ACS observations in the z-band confirm 17 out of 18 high redshift candidates as optical drop-out objects; the remaining object appears faint and star-like. Second, Spitzer/IRAC images at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 μm have been obtained. 11 out of 18 candidates are in “free”, uncominated regions. These 11 high-z candidates are undetected, with upper limits which are compatible with their SED if these objects are blue star-forming galaxies at high redshift (see Fig. 1). In conclusion, our new observations corroborate so far the high-z nature of the majority of the candidates.

We report the discovery of two peculiar galaxies infalling into the lensing clusters of galaxies Abell 1689 (z~ 0.18) and 2667 (z~ 0.23). Hubble Space Telescope images show extraordinary trails composed by blue bright knots and stellar streams associated with both these systems, an ~L* and ~0.1L* galaxy. Under the combined action of tidal interaction with the cluster potential and of ram pressure by the intra-cluster medium the morphologies and star formation histories of these two galaxies are strongly perturbed. While in the massive system tidal interactions are the dominant effect and are able to produce a sinking of gas towards the galaxy center triggering a strong burst of star formation and changing galaxy's morphology, in the smaller galaxy the effects of gravitation are reduced by ram pressure stripping which blows away the neutral hydrogen from the galactic disk, quenching the star formation activity and transforming a gas rich late type spiral into quiescent disk dominated early type system. This result is a new additional evidence that galaxy mass represents the main driver of galaxy evolution, even during their dive into the harsh cluster environment and can give additional insights on the origin of S0s and dwarf cluster galaxies.

Recent progress in measuring the optical depth of neutral hydrogen in distant quasars and that of electron scattering of microwave background photons suggests that most of the sources responsible for cosmic re-ionisation probably lie in the redshift interval 6 to 10. We present two new observational results which, together, provide valuable constraints on the contribution from star-forming sources in this redshift interval. First, using a large sample of v-band dropouts with unconfused Spitzer-IRAC detections, we determine the integrated stellar mass density at z = 5. This provides a valuable ‘integral constraint’ on past star formation. It seems difficult to reconcile the observed stellar mass at z = 5 with the low abundance of luminous i-z- and J-band dropouts in deep Hubble Space Telescope data. Accordingly, we explore whether less luminous star-forming sources in the redshift interval 6 to 10 might be the dominant cause of cosmic re-ionization. In the second component of our research, we report on the results of two surveys for weak Lymanα emitters and z- and J-band dropouts highly-magnified by foreground lensing clusters. Although some promising z = 8–9 candidates are found, it seems unlikely that low luminosity sources in this redshift interval can dominate cosmic reionization. If our work is substantiated by more extensive and precise surveys, the bulk of the re-ionizing photons may come from yet earlier sources lying at redshifts z>10.

We use multi-colour data of the gravitational lensing cluster Abell 1835 to search for high-z candidates (Richard et al. 2006) and extremely red galaxies.

Applying a colour criteria of R-K ≥ 5.6 we have selected 12 EROs, of which 10(9) have no R(I)-band detection. Two of these sources posses multiple detections in the ACS z850 band, possibly gravitationally bound objects.

Using the method of Pozzetti and Mannucci (2000) to classify an ERO either as evolved elliptical or dusty starburst, we find that two thirds of all objects have colours assigned to evolved ellipticals. One of the remaining 4 sources is the known sub-mm source SMMJ14009+0252.

The spectral energy distributions of sources with no optical detection show strong similarities to the SED of the high-z object of Mobasher et al. (2005), i.e. a degeneracy between a low- and high-z solution. However, for objects we accept the low-z solution as the better fit.

A detailed analyses of the colour properties and spectral energy distribution will be published in two forthcoming papers (Schaerer et al., Hempel et al.).

XANES measurements have demonstrated that Nb polarization in (PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3)0.88-(PbTiO3)0.12 is small compared to that in KNbO3. This finding disproves the view of Nb5+ as invariably ferroelectrically active cation, and demonstrates that its polarizability depends on the Asite cations. Our results do not support conventional view of relaxor behavior in Pb(B'1/3Nb2/3)O3 ferroelectrics as a consequence of disruption of the connectivity of polarizable Nb5+ ions by their non-polarizable B' counterparts. Instead, they speak in favor of scenario in which relaxor behavior is caused by randomness of the local direction of Pb polarization due to chemical disorder on the B-sites of the perovskite structure.

A decade ago Sanders et al. (1988a, b) proposed a possible QSO formation scenario as a sequence of Galaxy Mergers → Ultraluminous IR Galaxies (ULIRGs) → Warm ULIRGs → QSOs. Since then, this proposal has become a paradigm against which all the subsequent observations will be compared. Fortunately for us, this paradigm makes two specific predictions: that is, 1) ULIRGs are powered by hidden AGNs, and 2) ULIRGs should be more abundant at z ~ 2, where the comoving density of optically-selected QSOs is sharply peaking up.

We studied the structure of coarse and nano-scale powders of CeO2 using pulsed neutron scattering. The diffraction data were analyzed using Rietveld refinement, and were also Fourier-transformed to obtain the pair-distribution function (PDF). The Frenkel type oxygen defects consisting of vacancies in the oxygen sublattice and oxygen ions in the octahedral interstitial sites of the fluorite structure were observed in cerium oxide for the first time. The interstitial oxygen ions were found to recombine with vacancies when the sample underwent thermal treatment at 1073 K. We suggest that these defects are directly involved in the oxygen storage mechanism of ceria used in automotive catalytic converters.

The ISO SWS spectrometer has enabled us to detect for the first time the emission lines from the pure rotational transitions of molecular hydrogens (H2). We have been investigating the physical conditions and the excitation mechanisms of H2 in bright IR galaxies. Here, we present the preliminary results for NGC 6240, which is probably the most interesting object in our sample because of its largest known H2 luminosity.

Surveys with ISO (Kessler et al 1996), in particular with the CAM (Cesarsky et al 1996) and PHOT (Lemke et al 1996) instruments, will greatly extend our understanding of extra-galactic populations and their cosmological evolution. The main advantages that ISO surveys have over e.g IRAS are increased sensitivity/depth and wavelength coverage. Within the Guaranteed and Open Time programmes there are many field surveys which will efficiently map the limits in these parameters. In this talk I will briefly overview those surveys before concentrating in more detail on one survey in particular, the ISO survey of the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), to illustrate the kind of results that can be expected.

Recent computer simulation studies of electron-bombarded metallic alloys have concentrated on finding a criterion for amorphization. It has been suggested that the thermodynamic properties of volume and total energy can be used as a gauge for defect induced amorphization. Our simulation results indicate that these properties can not be used due to their dependence on processing history. We propose that the distribution of the atomic level shear stresses can be used as this amorphization criterion. Using Finnis-Sinclair type many-body potentials and Lennard-Jones pair potentials, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on several model systems have been performed. By quantifying the analysis using the average shear stress normalized, by the average shear modulus of the glass, we will present evidence that the crystal becomes amorphous at the defect concentration where the normalized average shear stress reaches a critical value, which is equivalent to the state obtained through quenching from the liquid.
