We present a new method – called HINORA (HIgh-NOise RANdom SAmple Consensus) – for the identification of regular structures in 3D point distributions. Motivated by the possible existence of the so-called Council of Giants, that is, a ring of 12 massive galaxies surrounding the Local Group in the Local Sheet with a radius of 3.75 Mpc, we apply HINORA to the Local Volume Galaxy catalogue confirming its existence. When varying the lower limit of K-band luminosity of the galaxy entering the catalogue, we further report on the existence of another ring-like structure in the Local Volume that now contains the Milky Way and M31. However, this newly found structure is dominated by low-mass (satellite) galaxies. While we here simply present the novel method as well as its first application to observational data, follow-up work using numerical simulations of cosmic structure formation shall shed light into the origin of such regular patterns in the galaxy distribution. Further, the method is equally suited to identify similar (or even different) structures in various kinds of astrophysical data (e.g. locating the actual ‘baryonic-acoustic oscillation spheres’ in galaxy redshift surveys).

We present a database of galaxies in the Local Volume (LV) (https://www.sao.ru/lv/lvgdb/) Kaisina et al. (2012) having individual distance estimates within 11Â Mpc or corrected radial velocities VLG < 600 km s-1. It collects data on the following galaxy observables: angular diameters, apparent magnitudes in far-UV, B, and Ks bands, Hα and HI fluxes, morphological types, HI -line widths, radial velocities, and distance estimates. It also contains a consolidated set of optical images of all the galaxies from the SDSS and DSS surveys and Hα images of galaxies that were derived with the 6-m BTA telescope. The latest version of the Updated Nearby Galaxy Catalog (UNGC) Karachentsev et al. (2013) contains 869 objects, now the database consist of 1175 objects. We present basic relations, describing the updated LV sample: Hubble flow, distribution galaxies according to their distance estimates and on the sky, et al.

Properties of dwarf galaxies formed and evolved in the lowest density environment remain largely unexplored and poorly understood. Especially this concerns the low-mass end (Mbar < 109M⊙). We overview the results of systematic study of a hundred void dwarfs from the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. We describe the ongoing project aiming to form Nearby Void galaxy sample (R < 25 Mpc) over the whole sky. 1354 objects with distances less than 25 Mpc fall within 25 voids delineated by 460 luminous galaxies/groups. The void major sizes range from 13 to 37 Mpc. 1088 of 1354 void galaxies reside deeply in voids, having distances to the nearest luminous neighbour of 2–11 Mpc. 195 nearest void galaxies reside in the Local Volume. We summarize the main statistical properties of the new sample and outline the prospects of study of both, the void dwarf properties and the fine structure of voids.

We study the spatial distribution of the sparse cloud of galaxies in the Canes Venatici constellation. We determined distances of 30 galaxies using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) method. This homogeneous sample allows us to distinguish the zone of chaotic motions around the center of the system. A group of galaxies around M94 is characterized by the mass-luminosity ratio of M/LB=159 (M/L)⊙. It is significantly higher than the typical ratio M/LB=159 (M/L)⊙ for the nearby groups of galaxies. The CVn I cloud of galaxies contains 4–5 times less luminous matter compared with the well-known nearby groups, such as the Local Group, M 81 and Centaurus A. The central galaxy M 94 is at least 1 mag fainter than any other central galaxy of these groups. However, the concentration of galaxies in the Canes Venatici may have a comparable total mass.

Searching for lopsided/interacting objects among 1500 isolated galaxies yields only eight strongly disturbed galaxies which may be explained as a result of their interaction with massive dark objects. We present results of spectral and photometric observations of these galaxies performed with the 6-m telescope that lead to significant restriction on cosmic abundance of dark galaxies.

Inverse modeling was applied to the optimization of a crucible design for SiC sublimation growth. We found a crucible shape providing the optimal temperature distribution in terms of the powder source stability during long-term operation and of the convex crystal shape. Considerable improvement of temperature uniformity throughout the powder charge was achieved. The results obtained show selective sensitivity of the thermal field inside the crucible to modification of the crucible design. The inverse problem approach is easy-to-adapt to various optimization criteria and seems to be especially effective in the case of multi-factor optimization.
