We extend the Atiyah, Patodi, and Singer index theorem for first-order differential operators from the context of manifolds with cylindrical ends to manifolds with periodic ends. This theorem provides a natural complement to Taubes’ Fredholm theory for general end-periodic operators. Our index theorem is expressed in terms of a new periodic eta-invariant that equals the Atiyah–Patodi–Singer eta-invariant in the cylindrical setting. We apply this periodic eta-invariant to the study of moduli spaces of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature.

If the Bing double of a knot K is slice, then K is algebraically slice. In addition the Heegaard–Floer concordance invariants τ, developed by Ozsváth–Szabó, and δ, developed by Manolescu and Owens, vanish on K.

A current theme in the theory of 4-manifolds is the study of which properties of complex surface are determined the underlying smooth 4-manifold. For instance, the genus of a complex curve in a complex surface is determined by its homology class, via the adjunction formula. Recent work in gauge theory [10–12] has shown that, to a great degree, a similar principal holds for an arbitrary (i.e. not necessarily complex) smooth representative of a 2-dimensional homology class. Another question, still unsolved even in the context of algebraic geometry, is to find the number of disjoint rational curves on a complex surface. The classical case, namely that of hypersurfaces in CP3, has only been settled for degrees d ≤ 6. The papers [1, 2, 4, 8, 14, 15] contain bounds on the number of such curves and constructions of surfaces with many ( — 2)-curves; the last two together establish that 65 is the correct bound in degree 6.

A tangle is a pair of strings (t0, t1) properly embedded in a 3-ball. Tangles have been used in several approaches to the classification of knots (see [1, 4, 15]). In these investigations, one keeps track of the endpoints of the arcs, so that the sum of two tangles along their boundaries is well defined. In particular, the sum of a given tangle with a trivial tangle, and any invariants of the resulting link, are invariants of the tangle under the restricted relation of isotopy keeping the endpoints fixed.
