Maintaining nutritional adequacy contributes to successful ageing. B vitamins involved in one-carbon metabolism regulation (folate, riboflavin, vitamins B6 and B12) are critical nutrients contributing to homocysteine and epigenetic regulation. Although cross-sectional B vitamin intake in ageing populations is characterised, longitudinal changes are infrequently reported. This systematic review explores age-related changes in dietary adequacy of folate, riboflavin, vitamins B6 and B12 in community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years at follow-up). Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, databases (MEDLINE, Embase, BIOSIS, CINAHL) were systematically screened, yielding 1579 records; eight studies were included (n 3119 participants, 2–25 years of follow-up). Quality assessment (modified Newcastle–Ottawa quality scale) rated all of moderate–high quality. The estimated average requirement cut-point method estimated the baseline and follow-up population prevalence of dietary inadequacy. Riboflavin (seven studies, n 1953) inadequacy progressively increased with age; the prevalence of inadequacy increased from baseline by up to 22·6 and 9·3 % in males and females, respectively. Dietary folate adequacy (three studies, n 2321) improved in two studies (by up to 22·4 %), but the third showed increasing (8·1 %) inadequacy. Evidence was similarly limited (two studies, respectively) and inconsistent for vitamins B6 (n 559; −9·9 to 47·9 %) and B12 (n 1410; −4·6 to 7·2 %). This review emphasises the scarcity of evidence regarding micronutrient intake changes with age, highlighting the demand for improved reporting of longitudinal changes in nutrient intake that can better direct micronutrient recommendations for older adults. Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as connected sensors are increasingly being used in the public sector, often deployed and collecting data in public spaces. A theme commonly seen in the rhetoric surrounding public space IoT initiatives is empowerment, and these deployments are broadly perceived as beneficial by policy makers. However, such technology presents new governance challenges. It is important to ask who is empowered and who benefits, and we must ensure that such technological interventions follow democratic principles and are trusted by citizens. In this paper, we investigate how risk, transparency, and data governance require careful consideration in this domain, describing work which investigates how these combine to form components of trusted IoT ecosystems. This includes an overview of the landscape of public space IoT deployments, consideration of how they may often be subsumed in idealized smart city focused rhetoric, and discussion of how methodologies such as design fiction in community settings can uncover potential risks and concerns. Our findings suggest that agency, value and intent associated with IoT systems are key components that must be made transparent, particularly when multiple actors and stakeholders are involved. We suggest that good governance requires consideration of these systems in their entirety, throughout the full planning, implementation, and evaluation process, and in consultation with multiple stakeholders who are impacted, including the public. To achieve this effectively, we argue for transparency at the device and system level, which may require legislative change.

Diet has a major influence on the composition and metabolic output of the gut microbiome. Higher-protein diets are often recommended for older consumers; however, the effect of high-protein diets on the gut microbiota and faecal volatile organic compounds (VOC) of elderly participants is unknown. The purpose of the study was to establish if the faecal microbiota composition and VOC in older men are different after a diet containing the recommended dietary intake (RDA) of protein compared with a diet containing twice the RDA (2RDA). Healthy males (74⋅2 (sd 3⋅6) years; n 28) were randomised to consume the RDA of protein (0⋅8 g protein/kg body weight per d) or 2RDA, for 10 weeks. Dietary protein was provided via whole foods rather than supplementation or fortification. The diets were matched for dietary fibre from fruit and vegetables. Faecal samples were collected pre- and post-intervention for microbiota profiling by 16S ribosomal RNA amplicon sequencing and VOC analysis by head space/solid-phase microextraction/GC-MS. After correcting for multiple comparisons, no significant differences in the abundance of faecal microbiota or VOC associated with protein fermentation were evident between the RDA and 2RDA diets. Therefore, in the present study, a twofold difference in dietary protein intake did not alter gut microbiota or VOC indicative of altered protein fermentation.

The origin of the extraordinary strengthening of the highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel Sanicro 25 during cyclic loading at 700 °C was investigated by the use of advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Along with substantial change of the dislocation structure, nucleation of two distinct populations of nanoparticles was revealed. Fully coherent Cu-rich nanoparticles were observed to be homogeneously dispersed with high number density along with nanometer-sized incoherent NbC carbides precipitating on dislocations during cyclic loading. Probe-corrected high-angle annular dark-field STEM imaging was used to characterize the atomic structure of nanoparticles. Compositional analysis was conducted using both electron energy loss spectroscopy and high spatial resolution energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. High-temperature exposure-induced precipitation of spatially dense coherent Cu-rich nanoparticles and strain-induced nucleation of incoherent NbC nanoparticles leads to retardation of dislocation movement. The pinning effects and associated obstacles to the dislocation motion prevent recovery and formation of the localized low-energy cellular structures. As a consequence, the alloy exhibits remarkable cyclic hardening at elevated temperatures.

In this work, weddellite and sylvite crystals are identified for the first time on the involucral bracts and petals of Xeranthemum annuum and Xeranthemum cylindraceum using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometric (SEM-EDS) analysis. Well-developed crystals of weddellite (CaC2O4·2H2O) occur in the form of a tetragonal bipyramid (hhl), rarely in combination of a bipyramid and tetragonal prism (h00). Indumentum of involucral bracts of X. cylindraceum consists of nonglandular and glandular trichomes. Sylvite (KCl) crystals are observed only on the petal surface of X. cylindraceum. The crystals of sylvite occur in the form of perfect cubes (hexahedrons), but some crystals are deformed, i.e., partially elongated. Taxonomic significance of investigated microcharacters as well as the use of SEM-EDS analysis in taxonomic studies of plants are discussed.

Illegal killing/taking of birds is a growing concern across the Mediterranean. However, there are few quantitative data on the species and countries involved. We assessed numbers of individual birds of each species killed/taken illegally in each Mediterranean country per year, using a diverse range of data sources and incorporating expert knowledge. We estimated that 11–36 million individuals per year may be killed/taken illegally in the region, many of them on migration. In each of Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Lebanon and Syria, more than two million birds may be killed/taken on average each year. For species such as Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla, Common Quail Coturnix coturnix, Eurasian Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs, House Sparrow Passer domesticus and Song Thrush Turdus philomelos, more than one million individuals of each species are estimated to be killed/taken illegally on average every year. Several species of global conservation concern are also reported to be killed/taken illegally in substantial numbers: Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata, Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca and Rock Partridge Alectoris graeca. Birds in the Mediterranean are illegally killed/taken primarily for food, sport and for use as cage-birds or decoys. At the 20 worst locations with the highest reported numbers, 7.9 million individuals may be illegally killed/taken per year, representing 34% of the mean estimated annual regional total number of birds illegally killed/taken for all species combined. Our study highlighted the paucity of data on illegal killing/taking of birds. Monitoring schemes which use systematic sampling protocols are needed to generate increasingly robust data on trends in illegal killing/taking over time and help stakeholders prioritise conservation actions to address this international conservation problem. Large numbers of birds are also hunted legally in the region, but specific totals are generally unavailable. Such data, in combination with improved estimates for illegal killing/taking, are needed for robustly assessing the sustainability of exploitation of birds.

An F2 cross between Duroc and Large White pigs was carried out in order to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) for 11 meat quality traits (L*, a* and b* Minolta coordinates and water-holding capacity (WHC) of two ham muscles, ultimate pH of two ham and one loin muscles), 13 production traits (birth weight, average daily gain during post-weaning and fattening periods, carcass fat depths at three locations, estimated lean meat content, carcass length and weights of five carcass cuts) and three stress hormone-level traits (cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline). Animals from the three generations of the experimental design (including 456 F2 pigs) were genotyped for 91 microsatellite markers covering all the autosomes. A total of 56 QTL were detected: 49 reached the chromosome-wide level (suggestive QTL with a maximal probability of 0.05) and seven were significant at the genome-wide level (with a probability varying from 6 × 10−4 to 3 × 10−3). Twenty suggestive QTL were identified for ultimate pH, colour measurements and WHC on chromosome (SSC) 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17. For production traits, 33 QTL were detected on all autosomes except SSC6, 8 and 9. Seven of these QTL, located on SSC2, 3, 10, 13, 16 and 17, exceeded the genome-wide significance threshold. Finally, three QTL were identified for levels of stress hormones: a QTL for cortisol level on SSC7 in the cortisol-binding globulin gene region, a QTL for adrenaline level on SSC10 and a QTL for noradrenaline level on SSC13. Among all the detected QTL, seven are described for the first time: a QTL for ultimate pH measurement on SSC5, two QTL affecting birth weight on SSC2 and 10, two QTL for growth rate on SSC15 (during fattening) and 17 (during post-weaning) and two QTL affecting the adrenaline and noradrenaline levels. For each QTL, only one to five of the six F1 sires were found to be heterozygous. It means that all QTL are segregating in at least one of the founder populations used in this study. These results suggest that both meat quality and production traits can be improved in purebred Duroc and Large White pigs through marker-assisted selection. It is of particular interest for meat quality traits, which are difficult to include in classical selection programmes.

A quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of female reproductive data from a three-generation experimental cross between Meishan (MS) and Large White (LW) pig breeds is presented. Six F1 boars and 23 F1 sows, progeny of six LW boars and six MS sows, produced 573 F2 females and 530 F2 males. Six traits, i.e. teat number (TN), age at puberty (AP), ovulation rate (OR), weight at mating (WTM), number of viable embryos (NVE) and embryo survival (ES) at 30 days of gestation were analysed. Animals were genotyped for a total of 137 markers covering the entire porcine genome. Analyses were carried out based on interval mapping methods, using a line-cross (LC) regression and a half–full sib (HFS) maximum likelihood test. Genome-wide (GW) highly significant (P < 0.001) QTL were detected for WTM on SSC 7 and for AP on SSC 13. They explained, respectively, 14.5% and 8.9% of the trait phenotypic variance. Other GW significant (P < 0.05) QTL were detected for TN on SSC 3, 7, 8, 16 and 17, for OR on SSC 4 and 5, and for ES on SSC 9. Two additional chromosome-wide significant (P < 0.05) QTL were detected for TN, three for WTM, four for AP, three for OR, three for NVE and two for ES. With the exception of the two above-mentioned loci, the QTL explained from 1.2% to 4.6% of trait phenotypic variance. QTL alleles were in most cases not fixed in the grand-parental populations and Meishan alleles were not systematically associated with higher reproductive performance.

Characterisation of genetic diversity in a large number of European pig populations has been undertaken with EC support. The populations sampled included local (rare) breeds, national varieties of the major international breeds, commercial lines and the Chinese Meishan breed. A second phase of the project will sample a further 50 Chinese breeds. Neutral genetic markers (AFLP and microsatellites), with individual or bulk typing, were used and compared.

DNA from 59 European pig populations was extracted on samples of about 50 individuals per population. Individuals were typed for 50 microsatellites and for 148 AFLP bands. A subset of 25 populations was typed for 20 microsatellites on pools of DNA. Allele frequencies were estimated by direct allele counting for the co-dominant markers. Frequencies of AFLP negative alleles (absent bands) were obtained by taking the square root of absent band frequencies. Within-breed variability was summarised using standard statistics: expected and observed heterozygosity, mean observed and effective numbers of alleles, and F statistics. Between-breed diversity analysis was based on a bootstrapped Neighbor-Joining (NJ) tree derived from Reynolds distances (DR). The standard distance of Nei (DS) was also calculated.

Gold, palladium, platinum or nickel ohmic contacts on Mg doped p-type AlxGa1-xN with x = 0.4 and x = 0.45 have been examined. The Au contact provided the lowest contact resistivity with pc = 1.8 (± 1.1) x 10−3 Ωcm2, but only following annealing at 850°C. For the Pd, Au, and Pt contacts annealed at greater than 700°C, a rapid degradation in the current-voltage curves was observed upon testing. The degradation was induced by exposure to sub-bandgap light and was reversed with a mild anneal at 500°C. Possible mechanisms for the degradation are discussed.

MacLispix, a public domain image processing system for the Macintosh, has been applied to a variety of image processing problems such as analysis of diffraction spots, uniform display of x-ray maps, determination of fractal dimension of particle outlines, and analysis of data cubes. Due to interest from the PC community, we have ported the software to Windows, renamed it Lispix', and distributed it for both platforms, along with example images, source and documentation.

Lispix reads TIFF files and raw files (no image header), both with pixel types of signed and unsigned 8, 16 and 32 bit integers, 4 and 8 byte IEEE standard floating point numbers, and 3x8 bit RGB color. Lispix has a variety of standard image processing operations, such as thresholding, edge finding (gradient), filtering, scaling, Linear Hough Transform, false coloring, RGB color overlays and particle measurement.

A new keratinophilic species, Chrysosporium fluviale sp. nov., isolated from river sediments in Catalonia, Spain, is characterized by having small, slender and verrucose conidia borne on slightly swollen conidiogenous cells. Morphological and molecular characters obtained by sequencing of the corresponding ITS-5.8S rDNA regions and of the RFLPs support the separation of Chrysosporium fluviale from the morphologically closest C. evolceanui, C. indicum and the Chrysosporium anamorph of Arthroderma curreyi.

Polyimide is used extensively in a variety of integrated circuit packaging applications. It is a good dielectric material with excellent planarizing capabilities, but like most polymers, it absorbs moisture. This hygroscopic behavior can lead to reliability problems in integrated circuit packages. The effects of variations in process history on moisture uptake are examined using gravimetric measurement techniques. In particular, the effects of cure schedule and exposure to high temperature/high humidity environments (85 °C/85% RH) on steady state moisture uptake are reported. Steady state moisture uptake is shown to be a decreasing function of cure temperature. Samples cured at 250 °C absorb 25% more moisture by weight than do samples cured at 400 °C. Moreover, the steady state moisture uptake in polyimide is greater after the samples have been “aged” in a high temperature and humidity ambient. The bulk and surface chemical composition are also monitored as a function of aging using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), respectively. The PI surface chemistry degrades after 700 h in an 85 °C/85% RH environment. The bulk chemical composition appears to be unaffected.

This paper is dedicated to the question of solving unsteady thermal boundary-layers in the case of two-dimensional low-speed flows, provided that the difference between the temperature of the stream and that of the wall is not too great (so that the density is sensibly constant) and that the change in the wall temperature Tw (x, t) takes place at the same instant as the body is set into motion. The velocity boundary-layer is uncoupled from the thermal one and can be considered separately. In paper (2) is given the method for obtaining the velocity field (u, v). The temperature field T depends on the velocity field and can be obtained only after this one. The method (2) being available for this purpose assuming the difference between the temperature of the wall Tw (x, t) and that of the main-stream T∞ in the form of
