Section 1 of the FM14 focus on bridging the astronomy research and outreach communities - recent highlights, emerging collaborations, best practices and support structures. Greenhouse-grown soybean cultivars varied in their tolerance to preemergence application of sulfentrazone. The cultivars Ransom, Hutcheson, Kato, Gasoy 17, and Cobb exhibited relatively low tolerance to 0.5 kg ai ha−1 sulfentrazone with 38, 41, 46, 50, and 58% height reduction compared to respective controls. The growth of tolerant cultivars Centennial, Edison, and Hartz 5164 was not affected by this treatment. However, the growth of all cultivars was reduced at the excessive rate of 2.0 kg ha−1 preemergence application of sulfentrazone. No differences in root uptake or translocation of [14C] sulfentrazone were observed between the relatively tolerant and less tolerant cultivars tested. Centennial and Hutcheson cultivars rapidly metabolized sulfentrazone via oxidative degradation of the 3-methyl group on the triazolinone ring of the herbicide. Only 4.7 and 4.9% of the active ingredient remained in the foliage of Hutcheson and Centennial 24 h after treatment, respectively. While there were no differences in Protox inhibition or Proto IX accumulation between the two cultivars, Hutcheson was more sensitive than Centennial to peroxidative stresses induced by either Proto IX accumulation or rose bengal. Therefore, tolerance to sulfentrazone is due to rapid metabolism of the herbicide; however, the intraspecific difference in response to sulfentrazone appears to be due to intrinsic differential tolerance to the herbicide-induced peroxidative stress.

Consistent with field observations, sicklepod exhibited considerable tolerance to sulfentrazone, and coffee senna showed relatively high sensitivity to this herbicide in greenhouse tests. Germination was not inhibited in either species at up to 12.9 μM of the herbicide. However, the chlorophyll content of herbicide-treated coffee senna cotyledonary leaves was greatly reduced, and seedlings died within 10 d after treatment, while sicklepod seedlings were not visibly affected. Shoot height of coffee senna was inhibited 90% by sulfentrazone at 0.5 kg ai ha−1, while the growth of sicklepod was not affected up to 2.0 kg ai ha−1. Root uptake of radiolabeled sulfentrazone was 74% greater in coffee senna than sicklepod, but the amount of radioactivity recovered from the shoots of both species after 12 h was not different. Eighty-three percent of the parent compound remained in coffee senna leaf tissue after 9 h root exposure to the herbicide. In contrast, sicklepod took up relatively less sulfentrazone through the root and metabolized sulfentrazone in the foliage more rapidly than coffee senna, with 91.6% of the herbicide being metabolized during the first 9 h of exposure. These results suggest that the tolerance of sicklepod to sulfentrazone is primarily due to a relatively high rate of metabolism of the herbicide compared to coffee senna.

Sulfentrazone was foliar applied at 34 and 56 g ai ha−1 alone or in combination with surfactants to soybean cultivars Hutcheson and Centennial and to sicklepod, coffee senna, smallflower morningglory, velvetleaf, and yellow nutsedge. The most sensitive weeds, including coffee senna, smallflower morningglory, and velvetleaf, were severely injured by the lowest rate when sulfentrazone was applied with surfactants. Sulfentrazone provided the highest control of yellow nutsedge with X-77. Soybeans were not severely injured by sulfentrazone applied alone, but 55% foliar injury occurred when the herbicide was applied with X-77. However, the seedlings were not killed. Sicklepod was the most tolerant of the weeds tested. In the absence of surfactants, the order of radiolabeled sulfentrazone absorption by the foliage was Centennial (5.8%) = Hutcheson (8.5%) = coffee senna (10.4%) < yellow nutsedge (17.0%) < velvetleaf (22.3%) = smallflower morningglory (24%). Sicklepod leaves did not retain droplets containing sulfentrazone when no surfactant was used. Species with the highest foliar absorption also showed the greatest phytotoxic response to the herbicide. Addition of surfactants to the spray mixture enhanced the foliar absorption and overall phytotoxicity of sulfentrazone in the weeds. An inverse relationship was detected between the foliar absorption of sulfentrazone without surfactants and the amount of cuticular wax present on the leaves. No such correlation was observed when surfactants were used. Thus, surfactants overcame the barrier to absorption imposed by the cuticular wax and, under these conditions, selectivity apparently became dependent upon species-specific cellular tolerance to sulfentrazone.

Cogongrass is a troublesome, invasive weedy species with reported allelopathic properties. The phytotoxicity of different constituents isolated from roots and aerial parts of this species was evaluated on garden lettuce and creeping bentgrass. No significant phytotoxic activity was detected in the methylene chloride, methanol, or water extracts when tested at 1.0 mg ml−1. However, the total essential oil extract of cogongrass aerial parts was active. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of this extract using silica gel column chromatography led to the identification of megastigmatrienone, 4-(2-butenylidene)-3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-one (also called tabanone), as a mixture of four stereoisomers responsible for most of the activity. Tabanone inhibited growth of frond area of lesser duckweed, root growth of garden onion, and fresh weight gain of garden lettuce with 50% inhibition values of 0.094, 3.6, and 6.5 mM, respectively. The target site of tabanone is not known, but its mode of action results in rapid loss of membrane integrity and subsequent reduction in the rate of photosynthetic electron flow.

Amicarbazone is a new triazolinone herbicide with a broad spectrum of weed control. The phenotypic responses of sensitive plants exposed to amicarbazone include chlorosis, stunted growth, tissue necrosis, and death. Its efficacy as both a foliar- and root-applied herbicide suggests that absorption and translocation of this compound is very rapid. This new herbicide is a potent inhibitor of photosynthetic electron transport, inducing chlorophyll fluorescence and interrupting oxygen evolution ostensibly via binding to the QB domain of photosystem II (PSII) in a manner similar to the triazines and the triazinones classes of herbicides. As a result, its efficacy is susceptible to the most common form of resistance to PSII inhibitors. Nonetheless, amicarbazone has a good selectivity profile and is a more potent herbicide than atrazine, which enables its use at lower rates than those of traditional photosynthetic inhibitors.

Sulfentrazone persistence in soil requires many crop rotational restrictions. The sorption and mobility of sulfentrazone play an important role in its soil persistence. Thus, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted to mimic the soil properties of cation and anion exchange with different intermediates. The molecular characterization and ionization shift of sulfentrazone from a neutral molecule to an anion were determined using a three-dimensional graphing technique and titration curve, respectively. Sorption and mobility of 2.6 × 10−5 M 14C-sulfentrazone were evaluated using a soil solution technique with ion exchange resins and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, respectively. Solution pH ranged from 4.0 to 7.4. As pH increased, sulfentrazone sorption to an anion resin increased and its sorption to a cation resin decreased. Percent sulfentrazone in solution was pH-dependent and ranged between 0 to 18% and 54 to 88% for the anion and cation resins, respectively. Mobility of sulfentrazone on a 20% polyacryalmide gel resulted in Rf values of +0.02 and +0.39 for pH of 4.0 and 7.4, respectively. A double peak for sulfentrazone was detected in the polyacrylamide gel when the pH (6.0 and 6.8) was near the reported pKa of 6.56. There was no clear interaction for the sorption of sulfentrazone at 1.0 mg kg−1 to Congaree loamy sand or Decatur silty clay loam saturated with either calcium or potassium. Sulfentrazone behavior with the polyacrylamide electrophoresis gels and ion resins indicate the potential for this herbicide to occur as a polar or Zwitter ion. Sulfentrazone was adsorbed by potassium, calcium, and sodium saturated resins and subsequently desorbed using variable pH solutions. The level of sulfentrazone adsorption will vary among soil types and the amount of desorption into solution may be soil cation-dependent.

To go further in the optimization of treatment planning in selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), radiobiological aspects can be accounted for with the OEDIPE software and used to design fractionation protocols. Dosimetry was performed using data from 99mTc-MAA evaluations of 10 patients treated for hepatic metastases with SIRT. The maximal injectable activity (MIA) was calculated, using a tolerance criterion on BEDmean,healthyliver equal to 54 Gy2.5, for different fractionation protocols, varying the number of fractions, the repartition of activity and the time delay between fractions. OEDIPE was also used to calculate BEDmean and the EUD to the tumoral liver (TL) that would be delivered with those MIAs. Compared with a single-injection protocol, the MIA is increased on average by 23% ± 3%, 36% ± 5% and 45% ± 7% for fractionation protocols with 2, 3 and 4 equal fractions, respectively, while BEDmean,TL is increased by 15% ± 2%, 23% ± 4% and 29% ± 5%. EUDTL, calculated for one evaluation, is increased by 51%, 115% and 159% using 2, 3 and 4 equal fractions, respectively. For this evaluation, the optimal activity repartition for two-fraction protocols is (3/4 − 1/4) for time delays of less than 4 days, (2/3 − 1/3) for time delays between 4 and 6 days and (1/2 − 1/2) for time delays superior to 6 days. Finally, this study confirmed that OEDIPE can be regarded as a tool for treatment planning optimization and fractionation protocol design in SIRT.

For targeted radionuclide therapies, treatment planning usually consists of the administration of standard activities without accounting for the patient-specific activity distribution, pharmacokinetics and dosimetry to organs at risk. The OEDIPE software is a user-friendly interface which has an automation level suitable for performing personalized Monte Carlo 3D dosimetry for diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclide administrations. Mean absorbed doses to regions of interest (ROIs), isodose curves superimposed on a personalized anatomical model of the patient and dose-volume histograms can be extracted from the absorbed dose 3D distribution. Moreover, to account for the differences in radiosensitivity between tumoral and healthy tissues, additional functionalities have been implemented to calculate the 3D distribution of the biologically effective dose (BED), mean BEDs to ROIs, isoBED curves and BED-volume histograms along with the Equivalent Uniform Biologically Effective Dose (EUD) to ROIs. Finally, optimization tools are available for treatment planning optimization using either the absorbed dose or BED distributions. These tools enable one to calculate the maximal injectable activity which meets tolerance criteria to organs at risk for a chosen fractionation protocol. This paper describes the functionalities available in the latest version of the OEDIPE software to perform personalized Monte Carlo dosimetry and treatment planning optimization in targeted radionuclide therapies.

The measurement performances of in vivo monitoring vehicles were studied considering an increase in the radiological background in areas where the population is not evacuated after a nuclear accident. The study focused on 137Cs and 131I Detection Limits (DLs) and corresponding doses, for adults and one-year-old children. These DLs for ground contamination were obtained experimentally using a grid of point sources. Then, the DLs and doses were calculated using the experimental data and a safety factor for two accident scenarios. For these scenarios the 137Cs DL corresponds to a committed effective dose of 0.02 mSv. The 131I DL corresponds to committed equivalent thyroid doses of 3 mSv (adult) and 30 mSv (one-year-old child). To guarantee a 45 mSv thyroid equivalent dose assessment for the child the surface activity of 131I + 132I + 133I should be below 1.6 MBq/m2. This study shows that the vehicles can operate in a contaminated area where the population is not evacuated. However, in such a case, the contamination level outside and inside the vehicle should be kept stable to guarantee efficient body counting.

The aim of this study is to provide data that increase knowledge about the possible health effects of exposure to 90Sr contaminant in drinking water. 90Sr detection in the mouse bone model plays an important complementary role with computational dosimetry in these investigations. S-value (absorbed dose per unit cumulated activity) calculations using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, 90Sr detection by liquid scintillation β counting in the femur bone and X-ray microanalysis were carried out. The present work is focused on using MCNPX and its validation at a cellular level. The cytoplasm (Cy), nucleus (N) and 90Sr radiation source were simulated with the MC code MCNPX. Cells are assumed to be spherical, with the radii of the cell and cell nucleus ranging from 2 to 10 μm. The S-value (in Gy/Bq.s) calculations were provided for a 90Sr source distributed uniformly in the cell nucleus or cytoplasm and for two source-target combinations (t←s). A comparison between the calculated MC results and the MIRD values agreed very well since the relative deviations are less than 4%. The earliest results of X-ray microanalysis indicated that the 90Sr was below the detection limit (<0.1%) in the bone tissue. However, the measurements by liquid scintillation showed the presence of 90Sr in the femur bone.

La scintillation liquide est une méthode d’analyse de choix du suivi radio toxicologique des travailleurs susceptibles d’être exposés à des sources émettrices β purs. Les éléments étant présents à l’état de traces dans les urines, il est nécessaire d’optimiser la technique de mesure afin d’obtenir la meilleure sensibilité. Ces dernières années ont vu apparaître des nouvelles générations de liquides scintillants, moins polluants et moins toxiques, destinés à remplacer les liquides scintillants traditionnels. Ces scintillants dits de « nouvelle génération » possèdent cependant un inconvénient technique à leur utilisation : une dissipation plus longue de l’énergie émise par le photon de fluorescence résultant de l’interaction entre le milieu scintillant et le rayonnement. Ce phénomène a un impact direct sur la qualité de la détection et amène à rechercher une valeur du Delay Before Burst optimale qui permette de distinguer les signaux du rayonnement de la source à mesurer, de ceux venant du milieu environnant. Cette étude vise à montrer l’importance du choix de la valeur du paramètre Delay Before Burst dans l’optimisation des limites de détection pour les mesures en scintillation liquide. L’influence de ce paramètre a été étudiée sur les différents radionucléides mesurés au Laboratoire d’Analyses Médicales Radiotoxicologiques (LAMR) de l’Institut de Radioprotection et de Sureté Nucléaire (IRSN); le 3H, le 14C et le 89Sr. Notre étude compare les rayonnements β mesurés avec un liquide scintillant traditionnel : le Pico-Fluor 40 et un liquide scintillant de nouvelle génération : l’Ultima Gold LTT.
