The X-linked telomeric P elements (TPs) TP5 and TP6 regulate the activity of the entire P element family because they are inserted in a major locus for the production of Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs). The potential for this cytotype regulation is significantly strengthened when either TP5 or TP6 is combined with a non-telomeric X-linked or autosomal transgene that contains a P element. By themselves, none of the transgenic P elements have any regulatory ability. Synergism between the telomeric and transgenic P elements is much greater when the TP is derived from a female. Once an enhanced regulatory state is established in a female, it is transmitted to her offspring independently of either the telomeric or transgenic P elements – that is, it works through a strictly maternal effect. Synergistic regulation collapses when either the telomeric or the transgenic P element is removed from the maternal genotype, and it is significantly impaired when the TPs come from stocks heterozygous for mutations in the genes aubergine, piwi or Su(var)205. The synergism between telomeric and transgenic P elements is consistent with a model in which P piRNAs are amplified by alternating, or ping-pong, targeting of primary piRNAs to sense and antisense P transcripts, with the sense transcripts being derived from the transgenic P element and the antisense transcripts being derived from the TP.

The Triassic Lashly Formation occurs to the east of Mount Brooke at Coombs Hills. Previously established informal members B, C, and D of the Lashly Formation are now identified at Coombs Hills. Lashly Formation member D passes up into a poorly exposed interval of silicic shard-bearing fine-grained sandstone and tuff, which is correlated with the Jurassic Shafer Peak Formation of north Victoria Land and Hanson Formation of the Beardmore Glacier region. Lashly Formation members C and D are intruded by three phreatic explosion pipes, resulting from emplacement of Ferrar Dolerite intrusions at depth and associated explosive steam generation. These pipes, ranging up to 180 m in horizontal dimension, comprise sedimentary clasts in a sand matrix, most of which was locally derived. Pipe margins are mainly ill defined and adjacent country rock is commonly disaggregated or shattered, although retaining stratigraphic order. Locally, thin basalt intrusions have interacted with coal beds.

Our ability to fabricate close-packed single crystal rutile TiO2 nanowire arrays with average inter-wire distances of 5-10 nm allows us to create and control FRET-induced coupling effects, which can occur in this distance regime, in this architecture. We explored the use of such coupling to boost the performance of nanowire excitonic solar cells. Using Ru complex triplet dye N719 as the energy acceptor and fluorescent tetra tert-butyl substituted zinc phthalocyanine as the energy donor (see Fig. 1 for molecular structures), we obtained up to a four fold improvement in the quantum yield for red photons in the 660-690 nm spectral range. Similarly, by using a carboxylated unsymmetrical squaraine dye as the energy acceptor and highly fluorescent Nile Red dye as the donor (see Fig. 1 for molecular structures), we obtained 60% increased external quantum yields for photons in the 480-580 nm spectral range. For both systems, the use of FRET broadened spectral coverage and improved light harvesting. In this report, we also develop fundamental design principles in choosing donor-acceptor combinations for high efficiency FRET-enhanced solar cells in nanowire array architectures.

The research described here investigates the hypothesis that nanoarchitecture contained in a nanowire array is capable of attenuating the adverse host response, biofouling, generated when medical devices, such as sensors, are implanted in the body. This adverse host response generates an avascular fibrous mass transfer barrier between the device and the analyte of interest, disabling the sensor. Numerous studies have indicated that surface chemistry and architecture modulated the host response. These findings lead us to hypothesize that nanostructured surfaces will significantly inhibit the formation of an avascular fibrous capsule. We are investigating whether vibrating magnetostrictive nanowires, formed in nanowire arrays, can prevent protein and cell adhesion. Magnetostrictive nanowires are fabricated by electroplating a ferromagnetic metal alloy into the pores of a nanoporous alumina template. The ferromagnetic nanowires are made to vibrate by altering the magnetic field surrounding the wires. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and other protein assays were used to study protein adhesion on the nanowire arrays. These results display a reduced protein adhesion per surface area of static nanowires. The vibrating nanowires show a further reduction in protein adhesion, compared to static wires. Studies were also preformed to investigate the effects of nanoarchitecture have on cell adhesion. These studies were performed with both static and vibrating nanowires. Preliminary protein adhesion studies have shown that a nanowire arrays modulate protein adhesion in vitro.

We report on the fabrication of self-organized titanium oxide nanotube arrays of enhanced surface area prepared by anodic oxidation of a pure titanium sheet in electrolyte solutions containing potassium fluoride (KF) or sodium fluoride (NaF). The effects of electrolyte composition and concentration, solution pH, and the anodic potential on the formation of nanotubes and dimensions of the resulting nanotubes are detailed. Although nanotube arrays of length greater than 500 nm are not possible with hydrofluoric acid containing electrolytes [G.K. Mor, O.K. Varghese, M. Paulose,N. Mukherjee, C.A. Grimes, J. Mater. Res. 18, 2588 (2003)], by adjusting the pH of a KF containing electrolyte to 4.5 using additives such as sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium hydrogen sulfate, and/or citric acid, we could increase the length of the nanotube-array to approximately 4.4 μm, an order of magnitude increase in length. The as-prepared nanotubes are composed of amorphous titanium oxide. Independent of the electrolyte composition, crystallization of the nanotubes to anatase phase occurred at temperatures ⩾280 °C. Rutile formation occurred at the nanotube-Ti substrate interface at temperatures near 480 °C. It appears geometry constraints imposed by the nanotube walls inhibit anatase to rutile transformation. No disintegration of the nanotube array structure is observed at temperatures as high as 580 °C. The excellent structural and crystal phase stability of these nanotubes make them promising for both low- and high-temperature applications.

FeCoNi ternary alloy nanowire arrays 32–106 nm in diameter were fabricated within nanoporous alumina membranes using 15 Vrms alternating current electrodeposition at frequencies of 50, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 Hz. The magnetic coercivity and hysteresis loop squareness-ratio (Mr/Ms) were studied as functions of electrolyte composition, nanowire diameter, and nanowire aspect ratio.

N-type nanocrystalline titania is a promising material for use in semiconductor photoelectrochemical cells and, potentially, the solar generation of hydrogen. In this study, we examined the photochemical properties of titania nanotube arrays made by anodization of a starting Ti foil in a fluoride ion containing electrolyte. The absorption properties of the titania nanotube samples were investigated using diffuse reflectance ultraviolet (UV)-visible (vis) spectroscopy, with a broadening of the absorption spectra seen as a function of material phase, nanotube diameter, and Pd sensitization. The magnitude of the anodic photocurrent obtained from the polycrystalline nanotube samples, measured under band gap UV illumination, appeared to be significantly higher than that reported for any other form of nanocrystalline titania. A maximum photoconversion efficiency (UV light exposure at 365 nm, intensity 146 mW/cm2) of 4.8% was obtained for 22 nm diameter nanotubes annealed at 500 °C and coated with a discontinuous palladium layer of 10 nm average effective thickness.

Described is a room-temperature hydrogen sensor comprised of a TiO2-nanotube array able to recover substantially from sensor poisoning through ultraviolet (UV) photocatalytic oxidation of the contaminating agent; in this case, various grades of motor oil. The TiO2 nanotubes comprising the sensor are a mixture of both anatase and rutile phases, having nominal dimensions of 22-nm inner diameter, 13.5-nm wall thickness, and 400-nm length, coated with a 10-nm-thick noncontinuous palladium layer. At 24 °C, in response to 1000 ppm of hydrogen, the sensors show a fully reversible change in electrical resistance of approximately 175,000%. Cyclic voltammograms using a 1 N KOH electrolyte under 170 mW/cm2 UV illumination show, for both a clean and an oil-contaminated sensor, anodic current densities of approximately 28 mA/cm2 at 2.5 V. The open circuit oxidation potential shows a shift from 0.5 V to −0.97 V upon UV illumination.

Titania nanotubes synthesized by a soft chemical process are described, having diameters of 8 nm to 10 nm and lengths ranging from approximately 0.1 μm to 1 μm. X-ray diffraction studies show the structure of the as-prepared nanotubes is the same as that of the starting anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. Energy-dispersive x-ray analysis and electron energy loss spectroscopy studies further indicate that the as-prepared nanotubes are composed of titania. Studies using transmission electron microscopy verified that the nanotubes are formed during alkali treatment, with subsequent acidic treatments having no effect on nanotube structure and shape.

A tremendous variation in electrical resistance, from the semiconductor to metallic range, has been observed in titania nanotube arrays at room temperature, ≈ 25°C, in the presence of low ppm hydrogen gas concentrations (≤ 1000 ppm). The nanotube arrays are fabricated by anodizing titanium foil in an aqueous fluoride containing electrolyte solution. Subsequently, the arrays are annealed in an oxygen ambient, then coated with a 10 nm layer of palladium by evaporation. Electrical contacts are made by sputtering a small (e.g. 1 mm diameter) platinum disk atop the Pd coated nanotube-array. These sensors exhibit a resistance variation of the order of over 107 (1,000,000,000%) in the presence of 1000 ppm hydrogen at 23°C. To the best of our knowledge this dynamic change in electrical resistance the largest known response of any material, to any gas, at any temperature. The sensors demonstrate complete reversibility, repeatability, high selectivity, no drift and wide dynamic range. The nanoscale geometry of the nanotubes, in particular the points of tube-to-tube contact, is believed to be responsible for the outstanding hydrogen gas sensitivities.

We report on non-particulate titania photoelectrodes with a unique highly-ordered nanotube-array architecture prepared by an anodization process that enables precise control over array dimensions. Under 320–400 nm illumination titania nanotube-array photoanodes, pore size 110 nm, wall thickness 20 nm, and 6 μm length, generate hydrogen by water photoelectrolysis at a normalized rate of 80 mL/W•hr, to date the most efficient titania-based photoelectrochemical device, with a conversion efficiency of 12.25%. The highly-ordered nanotubular architecture allows for superior charge separation and charge transport, with a calculated quantum efficiency of nearly 100% for incident photons with energies larger than the titania bandgap.

In this study highly-ordered titania nanotube arrays of variable wall-thickness and length are used to photocleave water under ultraviolet irradiation. We demonstrate that the wall thickness, and length, of the nanotubes can be controlled via anodization bath composition and temperature. The nanotube length and wall thickness are key parameters influencing the magnitude of the photoanodic response and the overall efficiency of the water-splitting reaction. For 22 nm inner-pore diameter nanotube-arrays 6 μm in length, with 9 nm wall thickness, upon 320–400 nm illumination at an intensity of 100 mW/cm2, hydrogen gas was generated at the power-time normalized rate of 51 mL/hr•W at an overall conversion efficiency of 12.5%. To the best of our knowledge, this hydrogen generation rate is the highest reported for a titania-based photoelectrochemical cell.

Crystalline CuO and Cu2O nanowires with an average diameter of about 10 nm and lengths of several tens of microns were successfully synthesized, depending on synthesis conditions, using precursor Cu(OH)2 nanowires as templates. The crystallinity, purity, morphology, and structural features of the as-prepared nanowires were characterized by powder x-ray diffraction, selected-area electron diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the precursor polycrystalline Cu(OH)2 nanowires served as both reactants for the growth of CuO and Cu2O nanowires, and as templates controlling the size and shape of the resulting nanowires.

Using anodic oxidation with a time-dependent linearly varying anodization voltage, we have made films of tapered, conical-shaped titania nanotubes. The tapered, conical-shaped nanotubes were obtained by anodizing titanium foil in a 0.5% hydrofluoric acid electrolyte, with the anodization voltage linearly increased from 10-23 V at rates varying from 2.0-0.43 V/min. The linearly increasing anodization voltage results in a linearly increasing nanotube diameter, with the outcome being an array of conical-shaped nanotubes approximately 500 nm in length. Evidence provided by scanning electron-microscope images of the titanium substrate during the initial stages of the anodization process enabled us to propose a mechanism of nanotube formation.

Ultralow dielectric constant values were measured on Ni–Zn ferrites prepared using Fe2O3 as a starting material and sintered in a microwave field. Significant differences in microstructure, magnetic, and dielectric properties were observed between microwave-sintered Ni–Zn ferrites prepared using Fe3O4 (T34) and those starting with Fe2O3 (T23) ingredients. Higher magnetization values observed in T23 ferrite are attributed to large grain size, possibly containing abundant domain walls and the presence of fewer Fe2+ ions. The ultralow dielectric constant values observed on T23 ferrites show that this procedure is highly suitable to prepare Ni–Zn ferrites for high-frequency switching applications.

Nanoporous tungsten oxide (WO3), with pores of 50 to 100 nm in diameter, has been obtained by galvanostatic (constant-current) anodization of tungsten in a 0.25 M oxalic acid electrolyte. At room temperature, the optimum current density for nanoporous formation is approximately 6.5 to 8 mA/cm2. Monitoring of the anodization voltage during the fabrication process reveals a close match with the theoretical model of Parkhutik et al. [V.P. Parkhutik and V.I. Shershulsky, J. Phys. D 25, 1258 (1992)] for growth of nanoporous Al2O3. The as-anodized films are amorphous and crystallize upon annealing at 350 °C in an oxygen atmosphere.

The stability of titanium oxide nanotube arrays at elevated temperatures was studied in dry oxygen as well as dry and humid argon environments. The tubes crystallized in the anatase phase at a temperature of about 280 °C irrespective of the ambient. Anatase crystallites formed inside the tube walls and transformed completely to rutile at about 620 °C in dry environments and 570 °C in humid argon. No discernible changes in the dimensions of the tubes were found when the heat treatment was performed in oxygen. However, variations of 10% and 20% in average inner diameter and wall thickness, respectively, were observed when annealing in a dry argon atmosphere at 580 °C for 3 h. Pore shrinkage was even more pronounced in humid argon environments. In all cases the nanotube architecture was found to be stable up to approximately 580 °C, above which oxidation and grain growth in the titanium support disrupted the overlying nanotube array.

We demonstrate in this paper that common crystalline phases can be made noncrystalline and hard magnets can be converted to soft magnets in the solid state in several seconds at temperatures far below the melting points. New crystal structures and magnetic structures of ferromagnetic oxides (ferrites such as BaFe12O19, CoFe2O4, Fe3O4, and ZnFe2O4, etc.) are formed by reacting either the stoichiometric mixture of oxides or the preformed phase-pure crystalline material in a pure H field (or E field) at microwave (2.45 GHz) frequencies. These major changes in the magnetic properties as well as major structural phase changes are caused by the magnetic field.

The effect of pore size and uniformity on the humidity response of nanoporous alumina, formed on aluminum thick films through an anodization process, is reported. Pore sizes examined range from approximately 13 to 45 nm, with a pore size standard deviations ranging from 2.6 to 7.8 nm. The response of the material to humidity is a strong function of pore size and operating frequency. At 5 kHz an alumina sensor with an average pore size of 13.6 nm (standard deviation 2.6 nm) exhibits a well-behaved change in impedance magnitude of 103 over 20% to 90% relative humidity. Increasing pore size decreases the humidity range over which the sensors have high sensitivity and shifts the operating range to higher humidity values. Cole–Cole plots of 5 to 13 MHz measured impedance spectra, modeled using equivalent circuits, are used to resolve the effects of water adsorption and ion migration within the adsorbed water layer. The presence of impurity ions within the highly ordered nano-dimensional pores, accumulated during the anodization process, appear highly beneficial for obtaining a substantial variation in measured impedance over a wide range of humidity values.
