The long-term behavior of nuclear glass subjected to alpha radiation by minor actinides must be investigated with a view to geological disposal. This study focuses on the effect of alpha radiation on the chemical reactivity of R7T7 glass with pure water, mainly on the residual alteration rate regime. A glass specimen doped with 0.85 wt% 239PuO2 (α emitter) is leached under static conditions in argon atmosphere at 90°C and at a high surface-area-to-volume ratio (S/V = 20 cm−1). The alteration rate is monitored by the release of glass alteration tracer elements (B, Na and Li). Radiation effects on the leached glass and its gel network are characterized by SEM and TEM analyses. Plutonium release is also measured by radiometry and its chemical oxidation state is assessed by measuring the pH and redox potential of the leachates. The results do not highlight any significant effect of alpha radiation on the residual alteration of this doped glass. This observation is consistent with SEM and TEM characterizations, which show that a protective layer can be formed under alpha radiation. Very low concentrations of soluble plutonium are measured in the leachate. These Pu releases are three orders of magnitude lower than the boron release, indicating strong plutonium retention.

During the initial period after disposal, in which no mass transfer occurs with environmental materials, spent fuel undergoes modifications mainly arising from the effects of α self-irradiation damage. To simulate this aging phenomenon and estimate the consequences on the matrix, an experimental study was carried out in which old UO2 samples doped with short-lived actinides were characterized and analyzed. Changes that occur rapidly at the beginning of the aging process were identified in two lots of actinide-doped samples. Volume and microscopic swelling increased, reaching a maximum relative level of 1.5%. At the same damage level, microscopic swelling remained below 0.9%, suggesting that helium formation and atomic defects have a role in this regard. Similarly, the sample microhardness rapidly increased by up to more than 12%. Characterizing 238PuO2 sources showed at very high integrated and instantaneous doses, irradiation damage and helium accumulation at the grain boundaries resulted in grain decohesion or even powder formation. Helium mobility appeared to be modified by the presence of defects, and local implantation experiments were devised in the CEA's Pierre Süe Laboratory at Saclay to quantify this thermally enhanced diffusion component. The physical condition of the sintered PuO2 pellets after 30 years of storage revealed a purely athermal diffusion mechanism, depending on the sample α activity.

Zirconolite is a candidate host material for conditioning minor tri- and tetra-valent actinides arising from enhanced nuclear spent fuel reprocessing and partitioning, in the case of disposal of the nuclear waste. Its chemical durability has been studied here under charged particle-induced radiolysis (He2+ and proton external beams) to identify the possible effects of water radiolysis on the dissolution rates in pure water and to describe the alteration mechanisms. Two experimental geometries have been used in order to evaluate the influence of the following parameters: solid irradiation, water radiolysis. In the first geometry the beam gets through the sample before stopping at the surface/water interface. In the second one the beam stops before the surface/water interface. Results on the elemental releases due to the enhanced dissolution of the zirconolite surface during charged particle-induced irradiation of water are presented. Under radiolysis, an increase of one order of magnitude is observed in the Ti, Zr and Nd elemental releases. No difference in the total elemental releases can be noticed when the solid is also irradiated.

The behaviour and diffusion mechanisms of helium in nuclear ceramics, such as uranium dioxide spent fuel matrix and zirconolite for the specific conditioning of minor actinides, significantly impact the possible evolution of those matrices in interim storage or disposal conditions. In the framework of spent fuel storage studies, the additional diffusion of gas and fission products in uranium dioxidematrix is also an essential aspect of the R&D. Specific experimental studies have been conducted, devoted to thermal diffusion under 1000 C. Data processing methods, lead to helium diffusion coefficient and associated activation energy of 1.05 eV in the zirconolite and 2 eV in UO2. Comparativelywith the uranium dioxide matrix, the helium diffusion coefficient in zirconolite is 1 to 100 million times higher; this parameter will have to be taken into account to dimension the waste form. Diffusion coefficients measurements between 800 C and 1000 C, investigated by SIMS, showed a very slow diffusion of volatile fission products Xe, I, Te and Cs, with coefficients two or three order of magnitude lower than for helium.

The properties of actinide glasses are studied in the context of high-level waste management programs. Reprocessing high burnup fuels in particular will increase the minor actinide content in the glass package, resulting in higher cumulative alpha decay doses in the glass, and raising the question of the glass matrix behavior and especially its containment properties. The effect of alpha self-irradiation on the glass behavior is evaluated by doping the glass with a short-lived actinide (244Cm) to reach in several years the alpha dose received by the future glass packages over several thousand years. “R7T7” borosilicate glasses were doped with 3 different curium contents (0.04 wt%, 0.4 wt% and 1.2 wt% 244CmO2). The glass homogeneity was characterized by SEM and XRD. Chemical analysis after dissolution of the glass confirmed the chemical composition. The curium content and its distribution in the glass specimens were checked by calorimetry measurements and gamma spectrometry on 243Cm and 245Cm isotopes. The density and mechanical properties of the curium-doped glasses were characterized up to 2 × 1018 α/g, revealing only a slight evolution of the macroscopic behavior of R7T7 glass in this range. The leaching behavior of curium-doped glass was also studied by Soxhlet tests. The results do not show any significant evolution of the initial alteration rate with the alpha dose.

Under the geological disposal conditions, spent fuel (SF) is expected to evolve during the 10,000 years while being maintained isolated from the biosphere before coming in contact with water. Under these circumstances, several driving forces would lead to the progressive intrinsic transformations within the rod which would modify the subsequent release of radionuclides. The major mechanisms are the production of a significant volume of He within the UO2 lattice, the accumulation of irradiation defects due to the low temperature which avoids any annealing, the slow migration of radionuclides (RN) within the system by (i) the α self-irradiation-induced athermal diffusion and (ii) locally the building-up of internal mechanical stresses which could turn the pellets into powder. However, the current RN source terms for SF have never accounted for this evolution as they are based on existing knowledge of the fresh SF. Two major mechanisms were considered, the leaching of the readily available fraction (one which was supposed to be instantly accessible to water), and the release of RN through alteration of the UO2 grains. We are now proposing a new RN source term model based on a microscopic description of the system in order to also take account of the early evolution of the closed system, the amplitude of which increases with the burnup and is greater for MOX fuels.
