A series of organo-montmorillonites and organo-hectorites was prepared by complete ion-exchange from the pure sodium form of the parent smectites. The organic cations were tetramethylammonium, trimethylated quaternary ammonium derivatives of the lysine and of the ornithine methyl esters, quaternarized polyammonium cations, or tetraphenylphosphonium (TPP). These organo-smectites were used as packing material for gas chromatography columns. Mixtures of light hydrocarbons (methane to n-butane; “C1” to “C4”) could be separated. The degree of separation depends on the presence of micropores or of organophilic mesopores. The BET surface area, the micropore and mesopore volumes, as well as the size distribution of micropores and mesopores were measured for several systems. As a general trend, the retention times of the light hydrocarbons decrease with an increase of the micropore volume. In the case of TPP-montmorillonite, characterized by a large mesopore volume but for which no microporosity could be detected, separation of longer linear hydrocarbons (n-pentane to n-octane) could also be achieved.

A stable 8.4 Å hydrate of kaolinite was prepared by exchanging ethylene glycol for water in the 10.8 Å intercalate of ethylene glycol in kaolinite. The hydrate of kaolinite was characterized by XRD, FTIR and TGA/DSC. From the TGA data, one can estimate that there is 0.60 water molecule per Al2Si2O5(OH)4 units. The IR data suggest a similarity of the local environment of the intercalated water in this 8.4 Å hydrate of kaolinite and the 8.4 Å hydrate of nacrite previously described by Wada (1965).

A new, well-ordered, thermally robust ethylene glycol intercalate of kaolinite was formed by refluxing the dimethyl sulfoxide intercalate of kaolinite (Kao-DMSO) with dry ethylene glycol (EG). This new phase (Kao-EG 9.4 Å) which is characterized by a d001 of 9.4 Å is distinct from a previously reported ethylene glycol intercalated phase of kaolinite (Kao-EG 10.8 Å) which has a d001 of 10.8 Å. The characterization of these two phases was studied by XRD, NMR, FTIR, and TGA/DSC. It was found that the concentration of water in the ethylene glycol reaction media played a crucial role in governing which of the phases predominated. Water favored Kao-EG 10.8 Å formation, while anhydrous conditions favored the formation of Kao-EG 9.4 Å. It is hypothesized that Kao-EG 9.4 Å is a grafted phase resulting from the product of the condensation reaction between an aluminol group on the interlamenar surface of kaolinite and the alcohol group of ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol units would be attached to the interlamellar surface of kaolinite via Al-O-C bonds. The Kao-EG 9.4 Å phase was found to be resistant to both thermal decomposition up to 330°C and also, once formed, in the absence of interlamellar water molecules, to decomposition by hydrolysis in refluxing water.

Monolayer to bilayer (MTB) and bilayer to pseudotrimolecular (BTP) transitions were observed for smectites exchanged with symmetrical tetraalkylammonium cations of increasing sizes: +NR4, where R = (CH2)nCH3, with 0 ≤ n ≤ 7. In the case of SWy-1, SHCa-1 and SWa-1, the variation in layer spacing observed from intercalation of tetramethylammonium up to tetraoctylammonium cations showed a behavior characteristic of smectites with homogeneously distributed interlayer cations. In the case of STx-1, the change in interlayer spacing with the increase of the alkyl chain length was characteristic of a very high charge heterogeneity. Higher charge smectites (SAz-1 and SCa-3, CEC > 1.20 mmol/g) were found to have decreasing cation exchange with increasing cation size, resulting in a "leveling off’ of the interlayer spacing toward larger cations. The MTB and BTP transitions were used to determine the internal surface area of various smectites. The proposed method was found to be a quicker and simpler alternative to the polar liquid sorption method for this measurement, but was ineffective for high-charge smectites (CEC > 1.20 mmol/g).

To control a vast spectrum of applications and processes, an understanding of the morphologies of clay mineral assemblies dispersed in aqueous or non-aqueous media is important. As such, the objective of this study was to verify the relationship between dispersion medium type and the size and morphology of the clay aggregates that are formed, which can increase knowledge on the assembly formation process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used in an attempt to describe kaolinite platelet organization in non-aqueous media and to compare it to the organization in aqueous media or in media with or without a selection of dissolved organic polymers. The SEM images indicated that the kaolinite platelet assembly process occurs during slow evaporation of the solvent. Because the experimental procedure was rigorously identical for all cases in this study, the SEM images compared how the effects of various media and environments on kaolinite platelet interactions can lead to different morphologies. Quite spectacular morphological differences were indeed observed between samples dispersed in aqueous and non-aqueous media, particularly when the kaolinite platelets were dispersed in an organic solvent with dissolved organic polymers. For kaolinite dispersed in water, only small aggregates were observed after slow evaporation. In contrast, large kaolinite booklets or vermiform aggregates were formed by slow solvent evaporation when kaolinite was first dispersed into some organic solvents. The aggregates were particularly large when an organic polymer was dissolved in the organic solvent. For example, kaolinite aggregates dispersed in a binary cyclohexane/toluene mixture with dissolved ethyl cellulose (EC) had top apparent surface areas (i.e. stacking length × width) of more than 3,000 µm2. Other dissolved polymers, such as polystyrene or the polysaccharide, guar gum, gave similar results. Kaolinite platelet aggregation resulted from face-to-face interactions as well as edge-to-face and edge-to-edge interactions. The XRD results showed that ethyl cellulose led to the formation of smaller kaolinite platelets with an increased tendency to form larger aggregates, which is due to the ability of EC to chemically interact with silanol and/or the aluminol groups of kaolinite.

The dehydration and rehydration processes of the clay mineral palygorskite (PFl-1) were studied by textural analysis, thermogravimetric analysis connected with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), and 29Si and 1H solid-state NMR techniques. The TGA-MS results clearly reveal weight losses at maxima of 70°C, 190°C, 430°C and 860°C. PFl-1 is characterized by a micropore area of 93 m2/g, corresponding to a micropore volume of 47 mm3/g. These values are also obtained for the sample heated up to 200°C for 20 h. Further heating at 300°C produces a collapse of the structure, as shown by the almost complete loss of microporosity.

The 29Si NMR spectra of palygorskite show two main resonances at −92.0 and −97.5 ppm, attributed to one of the two pairs of equivalent Si nuclei in the basal plane. A minor resonance at −84.3 ppm is attributed to Q2(Si-OH) Si nuclei. The resonance at −92.0 ppm is assigned to the central Si position, while the resonance at −97.5 ppm is assigned to the edge Si sites. It is confirmed bysolid-state 29Si and 1H NMR that nearly complete rehydration is achieved by exposing palygorskite samples that have been partially dehydrated at 150°C and 300°C, to D2O or water vapor at room temperature. When the rehydration is accomplished with D2O, the atoms are disordered across all the protons sites.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provides a powerful tool to describe local nuclear environments. In this work, unique structural information on kaolinite and on kaolinite dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) intercalate were provided by solid-state 1H and 27Al magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR. The interlayer chemistry of kaolinite (K) was examined by intercalating a select group of highly polar organic molecules or salts into kaolinite as a first step. Once the interlayer space is expanded, the intercalated compounds can be replaced in a second step. Intercalating DMSO into kaolinite to form the DMSO-K intercalate is, thus, a particularly useful first step toward the intercalation of a large variety of molecules, including polymers and ionic liquids. Well developed characterization methods are essential to define the structural modifications of kaolinite, and MAS NMR is a useful complement to other techniques. The use of 1H and 27Al MAS NMR for this purpose has been relatively rare. 1H NMR, nevertheless, can give unique information about kaolinite hydroxyls. Because quadrupolar interactions are sensitive to the local octahedral Al(III) geometry, solid-state 27Al NMR can follow subtle structural modifications in the octahedral sheet. In the present work, the 1H MAS NMR chemical shifts of KGa-1b were unambiguously attributed to the internal surface hydroxyls at 2.7 ppm and to the internal hydroxyls at 1.7 ppm. The 1H MAS NMR chemical shifts of the two methyl groups in DMSO-K are not equivalent and can be attributed to the 2.9 and 4.2 ppm peaks. The 27Al MAS NMR spectra of KGa-1b obtained under different magnetic fields revealed that most of the quadrupolar effects were highly reduced at 21.1 T, whereas the spectra at lower field, 4.7 T, were dominated by quadrupolar effects. The two octahedral Al(III) sites are not equivalent and can be distinguished in the low-field spectral simulation. Increased quadrupolar constants were observed and showed the major perturbations of the local Al symmetry that resulted from DMSO intercalation. Both the 1H and 27Al MAS NMR studies at different magnetic fields afforded important information about the local environments of the kaolinite hydroxyl groups and structural Al(III).

Palygorskite-indigo and sepiolite-indigo adducts (2 wt.% indigo) were prepared by crushing the two compounds together in a mortar and heating the resulting mixtures at 150 and 120°C, respectively, for 20 h. The samples were tested chemically to ensure that they displayed the characteristic properties of Maya Blue. Textural analysis revealed that no apparent changes in microporosity occurred in sepiolite or palygorskite after thermal treatment at 120°C (sepiolite) and 150°C (palygorskite) for 20 h. Micropore measurements showed a loss of microporosity in both sepiolite and palygorskite after reaction with indigo. The TGA-DTG curves of the sepiolite-indigo and palygorskite-indigo adducts were similar to their pure clay mineral counterparts except for an additional weight loss at ∼360°C due to indigo.

The 29Si CP/MAS-NMR spectrum of the heated sepiolite-indigo adduct is very reminiscent of the spectrum of dehydrated sepiolite. Crushing indigo and sepiolite together initiates a complexation, clearly seen in the 13C CP/MAS-NMR spectrum, which can be driven to completion by heat application. In contrast to the broad peaks of the pure indigo 13C CP/MAS-NMR spectrum, the sepiolite-indigo adduct spectrum consists of a well-defined series of six narrow peaks in the 120.0–125.0 ppm range. In addition, the sepiolite-indigo spectrum has two narrow, shifted peaks corresponding to the carbonyl group and the C-7 (C-16) of indigo. A model is proposed in which indigo molecules are rigidly fixed to the clay mineral surface through hydrogen bonds with edge silanol groups, and these molecules act to block the nano-tunnel entrances.

Ionic liquids intercalated in kaolinite constitute a novel class of nanostructured material. Kaolinite-pyrrolidinium halide intercalates have been prepared successfully by reacting the pyrrolidinium salts with kaolinite which was preintercalated with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) using the melt condition under N2. X-ray diffraction, 13C magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, differential thermal analysis (DTA)-thermal gravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirm the displacement of DMSO during the intercalation process. Based on results from the various characterization techniques, a structural model is proposed in which one mole of the pyrrolidinium salt covers two or three structural units of kaolinite, depending on the structure and size of the salt. The thermal stability was improved remarkably after intercalation of the pyrrolidinium salts, compared to the pre-intercalate. The DTA-TGA data show that the largest number of organic units released and decomposed, occurs under N2 flow, at temperatures ranging from 260 to 340°C, depending on the nature of the intercalated organic salts.

The objective of this study was to design new, functional, nanostructured materials from the abundant clay mineral kaolinite, in spite of development problems with the interlayer chemistry of kaolinite because of its non-swelling properties. A particular goal of this work was to graft, in a controlled way, alkylammonium groups onto the aluminol interlayer surfaces of kaolinite. This was successfully achieved by soft-chemical approaches, more specifically by the melting intercalation process of alkylammonium ionic liquids which were synthesized for this purpose. The resulting nanohybrid materials were characterized chemically and structurally by X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis (TG/DTA), 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The amount of grafted organic material was quantified from TGA results. Alkylammonium salts with a short alkyl chain were grafted directly using a melting reaction at 180°C under N2 involving the in situ displacement of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) from a DMSO-kaolinite pre-intercalate; for longer alkyl chains, the grafting was done in two steps. In the first step, the corresponding amino-alcohol was grafted into the kaolinite by displacement of DMSO from the interlayer space. The second step consisted of quaternarization of the grafted material by reaction with iodomethane or iodoethane.

The assignment of the 29Si CP/MAS-NMR spectrum of naturally-occurring sepiolite clay was re-examined using 29Si COSY and 1H-29Si HETCOR pulse sequences. Each of the three main resonances at −92.1, −94.6 and −98.4 ppm has been attributed to one of the three pairs of equivalent Si nuclei in the basal plane, and the resonance at −85 ppm to Q2(Si-OH) Si nuclei. On the basis of the COSY experiment, the resonance at −92.1 ppm is unambiguously assigned to the intermediate, near-edge Si sites. The HETCOR experiment revealed that the resonance at −94.6 ppm cross-polarizes almost entirely from the Mg-OH protons, and therefore is assigned to the central Si position. The remaining resonance at −98.4 ppm correlates strongly to the protons of the structural water molecules and therefore is assigned to the edge Si sites. Nearly complete rehydration was achieved at room temperature by exposing sepiolite samples that had been partially dehydrated at 120°C to water vapor or to D2O vapor. The rehydration results support the 29Si NMR peak assignments that were made on the basis of the COSY and HETCOR experiments.

The 29Si CP/MAS-NMR spectrum corresponding to the folded sepiolite structure in which approximately one half of the structural water has been removed by heating to 350°C is reported for the first time. The chemical shift values and relative intensities are significantly different compared to the resonances that are observed in the corresponding spectrum of the true sepiolite anhydride. These observations support the earlier claim that sepiolite heated to ∼350°C exists as a distinct phase to be differentiated from that of the completely dehydrated state.
