  • Renaissance humanism, it is generally agreed, emerged in the fourteenth century as an intellectual movement devoted to the study and imitation of ancient poetry and rhetoric. It was also dedicated to using literature to promulgate ethical values derived from a variety of classical schools and blended with Christian teachings in more or less convincing ways. Scholastic philosophy in its three branches of metaphysics, natural philosophy and logic was either avoided by and large by humanists or was subjected to an assortment of criticisms—especially dialectic and physics. Petrarch and Salutati are salient examples. There can thus be little ground today for confusing humanism and scholasticism, a tendency Paul Oskar Kristeller has so valiantly and persistently combatted.

  • The following essay will address itself both to the content and the motivation of Renaissance historiography in the last decade and will be confined primarily to the work that has been done in the English language. History, as other scholarly disciplines, tends always to look inward at its own work and the publications within its particular national and language boundaries. But at the same time more inventive minds within the discipline constantly feel a dissatisfaction with provincialisms of various sorts and seek to open their thinking and their work to wider influences. Yet this may happen very slowly. For example the famous essay of Lucien Febvre, ‘Une question mal posée,’ first appeared in 1929 (Revue historique, 161), found an Italian counterpart in Delio Cantimori's Prospettive di storia ereticale italiana of 1960, and was cited for its parallels with Pre-Reformation German piety in Berndt Moellers’ ‘Frommigkeit in Deutschland um 1500’ of 1965.

  • Some time between the summer of 1490 and the spring of 1492 the late fifteenth-century humanist Bartolommeo della Fonte (or, as he is frequently called, Fontius) wrote his De poetice ad Laurentium Medicem libri III. In 1960, as an appendix to my study of the inaugural orations of Fontius, I published the hst of his works compiled by his student Francesco Pandolfini shortly after the death of Fontius in 1513. To this I added a list of all the locations of these works, both manuscript and printed, that I could discover, including some not listed by Pandolfini. Shortly thereafter (in January 1961) I received a note from Professor E. H. Gombrich, director of the Warburg Institute, telling me that he had seen a manuscript of one of the unlocated items on the Pandolfini list (my number 33), namely Fontius' Poetics.
