Simultaneously and coherently studying the large-scale magnetic field and the stellar pulsations of a massive star provides strong complementary diagnostics suitable for detailed stellar modelling. This hybrid method is called magneto-asteroseismology and permits the determination of the internal structure and conditions within magnetic massive pulsators, for example the effect of magnetism on non-standard mixing processes. Here, we overview this technique, its requirements, and list the currently known suitable stars to apply the method.

We present preliminary results of the determination of fundamental parameters of single O-type stars in the MiMeS survey. We present the sample and we focus on surface CNO abundances, showing how they change as stars evolve off the zero-age main sequence.

Stochastic gravity waves have been recently detected and characterised in stars thanks to space asteroseismology and they may play an important role in the evolution of stellar angular momentum. In this context, the observational study of the CoRoT hot Be star HD 51452 suggests a potentially strong impact of rotation on stochastic excitation of gravito-inertial waves in rapidly rotating stars. In this work, we present our results on the action of the Coriolis acceleration on stochastic wave excitation by turbulent convection. We study the change of efficiency of this mechanism as a function of the waves' Rossby number and we demonstrate that the excitation presents two different regimes for super-inertial and sub-inertial frequencies. Consequences for rapidly rotating early-type stars and the transport of angular momentum in their interiors are discussed.

It is now well established that a fraction of the massive (M > 8 M⊙) star population hosts strong, organised magnetic fields, most likely of fossil origin. The details of the generation and evolution of these fields are still poorly understood. The BinaMIcS project takes an important step towards the understanding of the interplay between binarity and magnetism during the stellar formation and evolution, and in particular the genesis of fossil fields, by studying the magnetic properties of close binary systems. The components of such systems are most likely formed together, at the same time and in the same environment, and can therefore help us to disentangle the role of initial conditions on the magnetic properties of the massive stars from other competing effects such as age or rotation. We present here the main scientific objectives of the BinaMIcS project, as well as preliminary results from the first year of observations from the associated ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimetric surveys.

Magnetic fields play a significant role in the evolution of massive stars. About 7% of massive stars are found to be magnetic at a level detectable with current instrumentation (Wade et al. 2013) and only a few magnetic O stars are known. Detecting magnetic field in O stars is particularly challenging because they only have few, often broad, lines to measure the field, which leads to a deficit in the knowledge of the basic magnetic properties of O stars. We present new spectropolarimetric Narval observations of ζ Ori A. We also provide a new analysis of both the new and older data taking binarity into account. The aim of this study was to confirm the presence of a magnetic field in ζ Ori A. We identify that it belongs to ζ Ori Aa and characterize it.

In this article, we show how asteroseismology and spectropolarimetry allow to probe dynamical processes in massive star interiors. First, we give a summary of the state-of-the-art. Second, we recall the MHD mechanisms that take place in massive stars. Next, we show how asteroseismology gives strong constraints on the internal mixing and transport of angular momentum while spectropolarimetry allows to unravel the role played by magnetic fields.

The Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) project represents the largest systematic survey of stellar magnetism ever undertaken. Based on a sample of over 550 Galactic B and O-type stars, the MiMeS project has derived the basic characteristics of magnetism in hot, massive stars. Herein we report preliminary results.

We carried out an extensive photometric and spectroscopic investigation of the SPB binary, HD 25558 (see Fig. 1 for the time and geographic distribution of the observations). The ~2000 spectra obtained at 13 observatories during 5 observing seasons, the ground-based multi-colour light curves and the photometric data from the MOST satellite revealed that this object is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a very long orbital period of about 9 years. We determined the physical parameters of the components, and have found that both lie within the SPB instability strip. Accordingly, both components show line-profile variations consistent with stellar pulsations. Altogether, 11 independent frequencies and one harmonic frequency were identified in the data. The observational data do not allow the inference of a reliable orbital solution, thus, disentangling cannot be performed on the spectra. Since the lines of the two components are never completely separated, the analysis is very complicated. Nevertheless, pixel-by-pixel variability analysis of the cross-correlated line profiles was successful, and we were able to attribute all the frequencies to the primary or secondary component. Spectroscopic and photometric mode-identification was also performed for several of these frequencies of both binary components. The spectroscopic mode-identification results suggest that the inclination and rotation of the two components are rather different. While the primary is a slow rotator with ~6 d rotation period, seen at ~60° inclination, the secondary rotates fast with ~1.2 d rotation period, and is seen at ~20° inclination. Our spectropolarimetric measurements revealed that the secondary component has a magnetic field with at least a few hundred Gauss strength, while no magnetic field was detected in the primary.

The detailed analysis and results of this study will be published elsewhere.

We present the BinaMIcS project, its goals and the first BinaMIcS spectropolarimetric observations obtained with Narval at TBL and ESPaDOnS at CFHT: dedicated time-series for targeted hot and cool close double-line spectroscopic (SB2) binaries and a survey of hot close SB2 binaries. The very first results are also presented. In particular, our first survey observations seem to show a lack of magnetic fields in hot close binaries compared to single stars.

Spectral data reduction is a crucial step, as so important as the acquisition process. Rigor shall be as well applied at this stage to not degrade the quality of the data acquired. It is the last step before the computation of the astrophysical quantities. It is thus necessary to understand what is involved in each processing steps and the underlying limitations. Thus limitations or limit conditions are usually embedded and then hidden in a specific software command that everyone use without completely mastering what is really at stake. In this chapter we will introduced the different type of processing and spectral analysis which can dispose an amateur in several software packages. The first processing will treat about basic images correction which are linked to the CCD acquisition and the processes pipeline. We will then describe the different strategy to calibrate the spectral profile in wavelength and the few corrections driven by the earth environment to increase the accuracy of the future measurements. We will end with the description of few tools on quantitative spectral analysis and their limitations. The practice of spectral acquisition and processing is just at its beginning in amateur world. We hope that this section will demystify the essential step of spectral processing and will motivate the amateur to go beyond the contemplative watching of sky wonders.

The Sun is our nearest star. Its thorough study permits to extend results to other stars for which one does not think at once to encounter features first discovered on the Sun: spots, differential rotation, oblateness, radial surface displacements, etc. The Sun is thus an irreplaceable laboratory, as much as physical conditions prevailing there are often hardly reproducible on Earth. In this chapter, we do not intend to give an exhaustive survey of what we know about our Sun. We want only to give an original lighting on topical questions related to the subject of this book, based on stellar spectroscopy, and we will focus on what we call the solar code. What can we learn from the solar spectrum? More generally, what are we learning from solar oscillations and from the activity cycle? This chapter is divided into three parts, bearing in mind that results obtained on the Sun are transferable to other stars.

In a first part, we will show that the electromagnetic light code permits to access to different atmospheric solar layers. In a second part, we will show that the sound code is a fantastic tool for investigating the internal structure and the dynamics of the Sun. Thus tackled, the Sun is “peeled” as an onion, each successive shells giving an indication on the physical conditions acting in the studied layer, starting from the external atmosphere, crossing the free surface, to progressively go deeper inside, down to the core. In the third part, we will emphasize the “shape” concept, as departures to sphericity are essential in such an approach. This also allows us to study some global astrophysical properties, such as the angular momentum, the gravitational moments and the effect of distortion induced on the visible surface. We will conclude by extending such ideas to other stars, and especially by mentioning new results obtained on the oblateness of Altair and Achernar, including gravity darkening and geometrical distortion.

We intentionally replaced this whole matter in an instrumental context, by highlighting the observations, to the detriment of mathematical formulations, often tempting, but difficult: the reader will be able to find them, thanks to the many bibliographical references given.

The CNRS astrophysics schools gather professional astronomers several times per year to discuss hot scientific topics. Since 2003 and every 3 years, at Oléron and then at La Rochelle, a CNRS astrophysics school welcomes, for the first time, amateur astronomers. That is how about 15 professionals and 35 amateurs, with already a good practice of astronomy, meet to exchange on topics and methods of observations. The goal is to have the passion for astronomy of amateurs converge with useful objectives for the scientific community.

This chapter describes non supergiant B-type stars that show emission lines, called Be stars. The emission is caused by the presence of a circumstellar decretion disk. Many physical phenomena are thought to be involved in these stars, such as rapid rotation, pulsations and magnetic fields, and give rise to variations. Spectroscopy is used as a diagnostic tool to study Be stars, by professional astronomers as well as by amateurs.

This paper reviews the overall principles of astronomical spectrographs and the design rules that cover low, medium, and high spectral resolution instruments. Several examples of spectrograph designs are described that are easy to build and are optimised for amateur telescopes. Results are given for each of these instruments. Despite the modest size of amateur telescopes, we show that high performance spectrographs in the hands of amateur astronomers provide access to some specialised areas where the amateur could contribute to useful astrophysical work.

Nebular emission lines are easy to observe, and their spectrum contains a lot of information. We explain the mechanisms of production of the emissions, and the relation between the intensity of the recombination and forbidden lines, and the physical parameters of the objects. A gallery of emission lines spectra is presented, and a rough analysis will clarify their differences. The case of Planetary Nebulae will be developed, in order to determine the extinction constant, the plasma parameters (electron density and temperature), the chemical abundances, and also the properties of the central star (temperature, mass, stellar wind velocity, age).

Cometary spectroscopy from the ultraviolet to the radio wavelength domain provides us with insights on the composition of the gases that are released by the cometary nuclei. While infrared to millimeter spectroscopy give access to the parent molecules that are released directly from the nucleus, visible spectroscopy enables observation of daughter species. Those “radicals” observable in the visible domain have more complex spectroscopic band-like structures and are mainly CN, C2, C3, NH2. Their spectroscopic signatures are easily accessible to amateur astronomers class equipment. Provided that carefully calibrated data are acquired, some simple calculation can readily be done to convert the line intensities into comet molecular outgassing rates and thus provide interesting physical data on comets. In addition to broadband dust measurements, the interested amateur can produce valuable scientific data on comets that will always be welcome from the professional community and certainly useful as the monitoring of comets activity is always essential.

This chapter focuses on the fundamental origin of lines observed in astrophysical spectra. Some properties of the atomic world are qualitatively explained as an introduction to spectroscopy. General laws and rules are exposed and applied to celestial bodies. Please note: it is possible to read this chapter quickly concentrating only on the sentences in bold type.

The stellar internal magnetism is presently poorly known, even we have now some evidence that it plays a crucial role in different stages of stellar evolution. I first recall the helioseismic results coming from the SOHO mission on the deep interior. Then I show how we hope to observe directly or indirectly the deep solar magnetism by the simultaneous detection of gravity modes, acoustic modes and other phenomena. The two following sections compare the different techniques of observation and show the interest of a multichannel resonant spectrometer both for studying the deep dynamics of the core and for putting some constraints on the stellar atmospheric models. The last section describes the DynaMICCS mission submitted to ESA in the framework of Cosmic Vision 2015–2025 and the observations of the coming decade with the GOLF–NG instrument dedicated to the magnetism of the core and to the region located between photosphere and chromosphere.

In this chapter I present methods to measure stellar magnetic fields, in particular the regression method used with low-resolution spectropolarimeters and the Least Square Deconvolution method used with high-resolution spectropolarimeters. I discuss the advantages and inconvenients of each method and the various instruments available as of today. I conclude on the best polarimeter to use depending on the science goal and type of studied objects, and provide a short summary of the two ongoing large programmes MaPP and MiMeS.

Whereas the understanding of most phases of stellar evolution made considerable progress throughout the whole of the twentieth century, stellar formation remained rather enigmatic and poorly constrained by observations until about three decades ago, when major discoveries (e.g., that protostars are often associated with highly collimated jets) revolutionized the field. At this time, it became increasingly clearer that magnetic fields were playing a major role at all stages of stellar formation. 
We describe herein a quick overview of the main breakthroughs that observations and theoretical modelling yielded for our understanding of how stars (and their planetary systems) are formed and on how much these new worlds are shaped by the presence of magnetic fields, either those pervading the interstellar medium and threading molecular clouds or those produced through dynamo processes in the convective envelopes of protostars or in the accretion discs from which they feed.
