The exact regularised point particle (ERPP) method is extended to treat the inter-phase momentum coupling between particles and fluid in the presence of walls by accounting for vorticity generation due to particles close to solid boundaries. The ERPP method overcomes the limitations of other methods by allowing the simulation of an extensive parameter space (Stokes number, mass loading, particle-to-fluid density ratio and Reynolds number) and of particle spatial distributions that are uneven (few particles per computational cell). The enhanced ERPP method is explained in detail and validated by considering the global impulse balance. In conditions when particles are located close to the wall, a common scenario in wall-bounded turbulent flows, the main contribution to the total impulse arises from the particle-induced vorticity at the solid boundary. The method is applied to direct numerical simulations of particle-laden turbulent pipe flow in the two-way coupling regime to address turbulence modulation. The effects of the mass loading, the Stokes number and the particle-to-fluid density ratio are investigated. The drag is either unaltered or increased by the particles with respect to the uncoupled case. No drag reduction is found in the parameter space considered. The momentum stress budget, which includes an extra stress contribution by the particles, provides the rationale behind the drag behaviour. The extra stress produces a momentum flux towards the wall that strongly modifies the viscous stress, the culprit of drag at solid boundaries.

The generalised Kolmogorov equation is used to describe the scale-by-scale turbulence dynamics in the shear layer and in the separation bubble generated by a bulge at one of the walls in a turbulent channel flow. The second-order structure function, which is the basis of such an equation, is used as a proxy to define a scale-energy content, that is an interpretation of the energy associated with a given scale. Production and dissipation regions and the flux interchange between them, in both physical and separation space, are identified. Results show how the generalised Kolmogorov equation, a five-dimensional equation in our anisotropic and strongly inhomogeneous flow, can describe the turbulent flow behaviour and related energy mechanisms. Such complex statistical observables are linked to a visual inspection of instantaneous turbulent structures detected by means of the Q-criterion. Part of these turbulent structures are trapped in the recirculation where they undergo a pseudo-cyclic process of disruption and reformation. The rest are convected downstream, grow and tend to larger streamwise scales in an inverse cascade. The classical picture of homogeneous isotropic turbulence in which energy is fed at large scales and transferred to dissipate at small scales does not simply apply to this flow where the energy dynamics strongly depends on position, orientation and length scale.

Turbulent flow separation induced by a protuberance on one of the walls of an otherwise planar channel is investigated using direct numerical simulations. Different bulge geometries and Reynolds numbers – with the highest friction Reynolds number simulation reaching a peak of $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=900$ – are addressed to understand the effect of the wall curvature and of the Reynolds number on the dynamics of the recirculating bubble behind the bump. Global quantities reveal that most of the drag is due to the form contribution, whilst the friction contribution does not change appreciably with respect to an equivalent planar channel flow. The size and position of the separation bubble strongly depends on the bump shape and the Reynolds number. The most bluff geometry has a larger recirculation region, whilst the Reynolds number increase results in a smaller recirculation bubble and a shear layer more attached to the bump. The position of the reattachment point only depends on the Reynolds number, in agreement with experimental data available in the literature. Both the mean and the turbulent kinetic energy equations are addressed in such non-homogeneous conditions revealing a non-trivial behaviour of the energy fluxes. The energy introduced by the pressure drop follows two routes: part of it is transferred towards the walls to be dissipated and part feeds the turbulent production hence the velocity fluctuations in the separating shear layer. Spatial energy fluxes transfer the kinetic energy into the recirculation bubble and downstream near the wall where it is ultimately dissipated. Consistently, anisotropy concentrates at small scales near the walls irrespective of the value of the Reynolds number. In the bulk flow and in the recirculation bubble, isotropy is restored at small scales and the isotropy recovery rate is controlled by the Reynolds number. Anisotropy invariant maps are presented, showing the difficulty in developing suitable turbulence models to predict separated turbulent flow dynamics. Results shed light on the processes of production, transfer and dissipation of energy in this relatively complex turbulent flow where non-homogeneous effects overwhelm the classical picture of wall-bounded turbulent flows which typically exploits streamwise homogeneity.

The present work describes the multidimensional behaviour of scale-energy production, transfer and dissipation in wall-bounded turbulent flows. This approach allows us to understand the cascade mechanisms by which scale energy is transmitted scale-by-scale among different regions of the flow. Two driving mechanisms are identified. A strong scale-energy source in the buffer layer related to the near-wall cycle and an outer scale-energy source associated with an outer turbulent cycle in the overlap layer. These two sourcing mechanisms lead to a complex redistribution of scale energy where spatially evolving reverse and forward cascades coexist. From a hierarchy of spanwise scales in the near-wall region generated through a reverse cascade and local turbulent generation processes, scale energy is transferred towards the bulk, flowing through the attached scales of motion, while among the detached scales it converges towards small scales, still ascending towards the channel centre. The attached scales of wall-bounded turbulence are then recognized to sustain a spatial reverse cascade process towards the bulk flow. On the other hand, the detached scales are involved in a direct forward cascade process that links the scale-energy excess at large attached scales with dissipation at the smaller scales of motion located further away from the wall. The unexpected behaviour of the fluxes and of the turbulent generation mechanisms may have strong repercussions on both theoretical and modelling approaches to wall turbulence. Indeed, actual turbulent flows are shown here to have a much richer physics with respect to the classical notion of turbulent cascade, where anisotropic production and inhomogeneous fluxes lead to a complex redistribution of energy where a spatial reverse cascade plays a central role.

The hydrodynamics of a flagellated micro-organism is investigated when swimming close to a planar free-slip surface by means of numerical solutions of the Stokes equations obtained via a boundary element method. Depending on the initial conditions, the swimmer can either escape from the free-slip surface or collide with the boundary. Interestingly, the micro-organism does not exhibit a stable orbit. Independently of escape or attraction to the interface, close to a free-slip surface, the swimmer follows a counter-clockwise trajectory, in agreement with experimental findings (Di Leonardo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 106 (3), 2011, 038101). The hydrodynamics is indeed modified by the free surface. In fact, when the same swimmer moves close to a no-slip wall, a set of initial conditions exists which result in stable orbits. Moreover, when moving close to a free-slip or a no-slip boundary, the swimmer assumes a different orientation with respect to its trajectory. Taken together, these results contribute to shed light on the hydrodynamical behaviour of micro-organisms close to liquid–air interfaces which are relevant for the formation of interfacial biofilms of aerobic bacteria.

Particulate flows have mainly been studied under the simplifying assumption of a one-way coupling regime where the disperse phase does not modify the carrier fluid. A more complete view of multiphase flows can be gained calling into play two-way coupling effects, i.e. by accounting for the inter-phase momentum exchange, which is certainly relevant at increasing mass loading. In this paper we present a new methodology rigorously designed to capture the inter-phase momentum exchange for particles smaller than the smallest hydrodynamical scale, e.g. the Kolmogorov scale in a turbulent flow. The momentum coupling mechanism exploits the unsteady Stokes flow around a small rigid sphere, where the transient disturbance produced by each particle is evaluated in a closed form. The particles are described as lumped point masses, which would lead to the appearance of singularities. A rigorous regularization procedure is conceived to extract the physically relevant interactions between the particles and the fluid which avoids any ‘ad hoc’ assumption. The approach is suited for high-efficiency implementation on massively parallel machines since the transient disturbance produced by the particles is strongly localized in space. We will show that hundreds of thousands of particles can be handled at an affordable computational cost, as demonstrated by a preliminary application to a particle-laden turbulent shear flow.

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flows at friction Reynolds numbers (Re) of 550, 1000 and 1500 are used to analyse the turbulent production, transfer and dissipation mechanisms in the compound space of scales and wall distances by means of the Kolmogorov equation generalized to inhomogeneous anisotropic flows. Two distinct peaks of scale-energy source are identified. The first, stronger one, belongs to the near-wall cycle. Its location in the space of scales and physical space is found to scale in viscous units, while its intensity grows slowly with $\mathit{Re}$, indicating a near-wall modulation. The second source peak is found further away from the wall in the putative overlap layer, and it is separated from the near-wall source by a layer of significant scale-energy sink. The dynamics of the second outer source appears to be strongly dependent on the Reynolds number. The detailed scale-by-scale analysis of this source highlights well-defined features that are used to make the properties of the outer turbulent source independent of Reynolds number and wall distance by rescaling the problem. Overall, the present results suggest a strong connection of the observed outer scale-energy source with the presence of an outer region of turbulence production whose mechanisms are well separated from the near-wall region and whose statistical features agree with the hypothesis of an overlap layer dominated by attached eddies. Inner–outer interactions between the near-wall and outer source region in terms of scale-energy fluxes are also analysed. It is conjectured that the near-wall modulation of the statistics at increasing Reynolds number can be related to a confinement of the near-wall turbulence production due to the presence of increasingly large production scales in the outer scale-energy source region.

The paper describes the energy fluxes simultaneously occurring in the space of scales and in the physical space of wall-turbulent flows. The unexpected behaviour of the energy fluxes consists of spiral-like paths in the combined physical/scale space where the controversial reverse energy cascade plays a central role. Two dynamical processes are identified as driving mechanisms for the fluxes, one in the near-wall region and a second one further away from the wall. The former, stronger, one is related to the dynamics involved in the near-wall turbulence regeneration cycle. The second suggests an outer self-sustaining mechanism which is asymptotically expected to take place in the eventual log layer and could explain the debated mixed inner/outer scaling of the near-wall statistics. The observed behaviour may have strong repercussions on both theoretical and modelling approaches to wall turbulence, as anticipated by a simple equation which is shown able to capture most of the rich dynamics of the shear-dominated region of the flow.

Turbulent fluctuations induce the common phenomenon known as clustering in the spatial arrangement of small inertial particles transported by the fluid. Particles spread non-uniformly, and form clusters where their local concentration is much higher than in nearby rarefaction regions. The underlying physics has been exhaustively analysed in the so-called one-way coupling regime, i.e. negligible back-reaction of the particles on the fluid, where the mean flow anisotropy induces preferential orientation of the clusters. Turbulent transport in suspensions with significant mass in the disperse phase, i.e. particles back-reacting in the carrier phase (the two-way coupling regime), has instead been much less investigated and is still poorly understood. The issue is discussed here by addressing direct numerical simulations of particle-laden homogeneous shear flows in the two-way coupling regime. Consistent with previous findings, we observe an overall depletion of the turbulent fluctuations for particles with response time of the order of the Kolmogorov time scale. The depletion occurs in the energy-containing range, while augmentation is observed in the small-scale range down to the dissipative scales. Increasing the mass load results in substantial broadening of the energy cospectrum, thereby extending the range of scales driven by anisotropic production mechanisms. As discussed throughout the paper, this is due to the clusters which form the spatial support of the back-reaction field and give rise to a highly anisotropic forcing, active down to the smallest scales. A certain impact on two-phase flow turbulence modelling is expected from the above conclusions, since the frequently assumed small-scale isotropy is poorly recovered when the coupling between the phases becomes significant.

The Cahn–Hilliard model is increasingly often being used in combination with the incompressible Navier–Stokes equation to describe unsteady binary fluids in a variety of applications ranging from turbulent two-phase flows to microfluidics. The thickness of the interface between the two bulk fluids and the mobility are the main parameters of the model. For real fluids they are usually too small to be directly used in numerical simulations. Several authors proposed criteria for the proper choice of interface thickness and mobility in order to reach the so-called ‘sharp-interface limit’. In this paper the problem is approached by a formal asymptotic expansion of the governing equations. It is shown that the mobility is an effective parameter to be chosen proportional to the square of the interface thickness. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerical simulations for two prototypal flows, namely capillary waves riding the interface and droplets coalescence. The numerical analysis of two different physical problems confirms the theoretical findings and establishes an optimal relationship between the effective parameters of the model.

Results are presented from a direct numerical simulation of a particle-laden spatially developing turbulent boundary layer up to . The peculiar feature of a boundary-layer flow seeded with heavy particles is the variation of the local dimensionless parameters defining the fluid–particle interactions along the streamwise direction. Two different Stokes numbers can be defined, one using inner flow units and the other with outer units. Since these two Stokes numbers exhibit different decay rates in the streamwise direction, we find a decoupled particle dynamics between the inner and the outer region of the boundary layer. Preferential near-wall particle accumulation is similar to that observed in turbulent channel flow, while different behaviour characterizes the outer region. Here the concentration and the streamwise velocity profiles are found to be self-similar and to depend only on the local value of the outer Stokes number and the rescaled wall-normal distance. These new results are powerful in view of engineering and environmental applications and corresponding flow modelling.

We study the two main phenomenologies associated with the transport of inertial particles in turbulent flows, turbophoresis and small-scale clustering. Turbophoresis describes the turbulence-induced wall accumulation of particles dispersed in wall turbulence, while small-scale clustering is a form of local segregation that affects the particle distribution in the presence of fine-scale turbulence. Despite the fact that the two aspects are usually addressed separately, this paper shows that they occur simultaneously in wall-bounded flows, where they represent different aspects of the same process. We study these phenomena by post-processing data from a direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow with different populations of inertial particles. It is shown that artificial domain truncation can easily alter the mean particle concentration profile, unless the domain is large enough to exclude possible correlation of the turbulence and the near-wall particle aggregates. The data show a strong link between accumulation level and clustering intensity in the near-wall region. At statistical steady state, most accumulating particles aggregate in strongly directional and almost filamentary structures, as found by considering suitable two-point observables able to extract clustering intensity and anisotropy. The analysis provides quantitative indications of the wall-segregation process as a function of the particle inertia. It is shown that, although the most wall-accumulating particles are too heavy to segregate in homogeneous turbulence, they exhibit the most intense local small-scale clustering near the wall as measured by the singularity exponent of the particle pair correlation function.

Recently, clustering of inertial particles in turbulence has been thoroughly analysed for statistically homogeneous isotropic flows. Phenomenologically, spatial homogeneity of particle configurations is broken by the advection of a range of eddies determined by the Stokes relaxation time of the particles. This in turn results in a multi-scale distribution of local particle concentration and voids. Much less is known concerning anisotropic flows. Here, by addressing direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a statistically steady particle-laden homogeneous shear flow, we provide evidence that the mean shear preferentially orients particle patterns. By imprinting anisotropy on large-scale velocity fluctuations, the shear indirectly affects the geometry of the clusters. Quantitative evaluation is provided by a purposely designed tool, the angular distribution function (ADF) of particle pairs, which allows to address the anisotropy content of particle aggregates on a scale-by-scale basis. The data provide evidence that, depending on the Stokes relaxation time of the particles, anisotropic clustering may occur even in the range of scales in which the carrier phase velocity field is already recovering isotropy. The strength of the singularity in the anisotropic component of the ADF quantifies the level of fine-scale anisotropy, which may even reach values of more than 30% direction-dependent variation in the probability to find two closeby particles at viscous-scale separation.

We discuss how large-eddy simulation (LES) can be properly employed to predict the statistics of the resolved velocity fluctuations in shear turbulence. To this purpose an a posteriori comparison of LES data against filtered direct numerical simulation (DNS) is used to establish the necessary conditions that the filter scale LF must satisfy to achieve the preservation of the statistical properties of the resolved field. In this context, by exploiting the physical role of the shear scale LS, the Kármán–Howarth equation allows for the assessment of LES data in terms of scale-by-scale energy production, energy transfer and subgrid energy fluxes. Even higher-order statistical properties of the resolved scales such as the probability density function of longitudinal velocity increments are well reproduced, provided the relative position of the filter scale with respect to the shear scale is properly selected. We consider here the homogeneous shear flow as the simplest non-trivial flow which fully retains the basic mechanism of turbulent kinetic energy production typical of any shear flow, with the advantage that spatial homogeneity implies a well-defined value of the shear scale while numerical difficulties related to resolution requirements in the near wall region are avoided.

The paper addresses a set of new equations concerning the scale-by-scale balance of turbulent fluctuations in dilute polymer solutions. The main difficulty is the energy associated with the polymers, which is not of a quadratic form in terms of the traditional descriptor of the micro-structure. A different choice is however possible, which, at least for mild stretching of the polymeric chains, directly leads to an L2 structure for the total free-energy density of the system thus allowing the extension of the classical method to polymeric fluids. On this basis, the energy budget in spectral space is discussed, providing the spectral decomposition of the energy of the system. New equations are also derived in physical space, to provide balance equations for the fluctuations in both the kinetic field and the micro-structure, thus extending, in a sense, the celebrated Kármán–Howarth and Kolmogorov equations of classical turbulence theory. The paper is limited to the context of homogeneous turbulence. However the necessary steps required to expand the treatment to wall-bounded flows of polymeric liquids are indicated in detail.

The evolution of long waves generated by a pressure disturbance acting on an initially unperturbed free surface in a channel of finite depth is analysed. Both off-critical and transcritical conditions are considered in the context of the fully nonlinear inviscid problem. The solution is achieved by using an accurate boundary integral approach and a time-stepping procedure for the free-surface dynamics.

The discussion emphasizes the comparison between the present results and those provided by both the Boussinesq and the related Korteweg–de Vries model. For small amplitudes of the forcing, the predictions of the asymptotic theories are essentially confirmed. However, for finite intensities of the disturbance, several new features significantly affect the physical results. In particular, the interaction among different wave components, neglected in the Korteweg–de Vries approximation, is crucial in determining the evolution of the wave system. A substantial difference is indeed observed between the solutions of the Korteweg–de Vries equation and those of both the fully nonlinear and the Boussinesq model. For increasing dispersion and fixed nonlinearity the agreement between the Boussinesq and fully nonlinear description is lost, indicating a regime where dispersion becomes dominant.

Consistently with the long-wave modelling, the transcritical regime is characterized by an unsteady flow and a periodic emission of forward-running waves. However, also in this case, quantitative differences are observed between the three models. For larger amplitudes, wave steepening is almost invariably observed as a precursor of the localized breaking commonly detected in the experiments. The process occurs at the crests of either the trailing or the upstream-emitted wave system for Froude numbers slightly sub- and super-critical respectively.

The modification of the turbulent cascade by polymeric additives is addressed by direct numerical simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence of a FENE-P fluid. According to the appropriate form of the Kármán–Howarth equation, two kinds of energy fluxes exist, namely the classical transfer term and the coupling with the polymers. Depending on the Deborah number, the response of the flow may result either in a pure damping or in the depletion of the small scales accompanied by increased fluctuations at large scale. The latter behaviour corresponds to an overall reduction of the dissipation rate with respect to an equivalent Newtonian flow with identical fluctuation intensity. The relevance of the position of the crossover scale between the two components of the energy flux with respect to the Taylor microscale of the system is discussed.

Real turbulent flows are difficult to classify as either spatially homogeneous or isotropic. Nonetheless these idealizations allow the identification of certain universal features associated with the small-scale motions almost invariably observed in a variety of different conditions. The single most significant aspect is a flux of energy through the spectrum of inertial scales related to the phenomenology commonly referred to as the Richardson cascade. Inhomogeneity, inherently present in near-wall turbulence, generates additional energy fluxes of a different nature, corresponding to the spatial redistribution of turbulent kinetic energy. Traditionally the spatial flux is associated with a single-point observable, namely the turbulent kinetic energy density. The flux through the scales is instead classically related to two-point statistics, given in terms of an energy spectrum or, equivalently, in terms of the second-order moment of the velocity increments. In the present paper, starting from a suitably generalized form of the classical Kolmogorov equation, a scale-by-scale balance for the turbulent fluctuations is evaluated by examining in detail how the energy associated with a specific scale of motion – hereafter called the scale energy – is transferred through the spectrum of scales and, simultaneously, how the same scale of motion exchanges energy with a properly defined spatial flux. The analysis is applied to a data set taken from a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a low-Reynolds-number turbulent channel flow. The detailed scale-by-scale balance is applied to the different regions of the flow in the various ranges of scales, to understand how – i.e. through which mechanisms, at which scales and in which regions of the flow domain – turbulent fluctuations are generated and sustained. A complete and formally precise description of the dynamics of turbulence in the different regions of the channel flow is presented, providing rigorous support for previously proposed conceptual models.

Turbulent shear flows, such as those occurring in the wall region of turbulent boundary layers, show a substantial increase of intermittency in comparison with isotropic conditions. This suggests a close link between anisotropy and intermittency. However, a rigorous statistical description of anisotropic flows is, in most cases, hampered by the inhomogeneity of the field. This difficulty is absent for homogeneous shear flow. For this flow the scale-by-scale budget is discussed here by using the appropriate form of the Kámán–Howarth equation, to determine the range of scales where the shear is dominant. The resulting generalization of the four-fifths law is then used to extend to shear-dominated flows the Kolmogorov–Oboukhov theory of intermittency. The procedure leads naturally to the formulation of generalized structure functions, and the description of intermittency thus obtained reduces to the K62 theory for vanishing shear. The intermittency corrections to the scaling exponents are related to the moments of the coarse-grained energy dissipation field. Numerical experiments give indications that the dissipation field is statistically unaffected by the shear, supporting the conjecture that the intermittency corrections are universal. This observation together with the present reformulation of the theory gives a reason for the increased intermittency observed in the classical longitudinal velocity increments.

Steady incompressible inviscid flow past a three-dimensional multiconnected (toroidal) aerofoil with a sharp trailing edge TE is considered, adopting for simplicity a linearized analysis of the vortex sheets that collect the released vorticity and form the trailing wake. The main purpose of the paper is to discuss the uniqueness of the bounded flow solution and the role of the eigenfunction. A generic admissible flow velocity u has an unbounded singularity at TE; and the physical flow solution requires the removal of the divergent part of u (the Kutta condition). This process yields a linear functional equation along the trailing edge involving both the normal vorticity ω released into the wake, and the multiplicative factor of the eigenfunction, a1. Uniqueness is then shown to depend upon the topology of the trailing edge. If δTE=[empty ], as, for example, in an annular-aerofoil configuration, both ω and a1 are uniquely determined by the Kutta condition, and the bounded flow u is unique. If δTE≠[empty ], as, for example, in a connected-wing configuration, there is an infinity of bounded flows, parametrized by a1. Numerical results of relevance for these typical configurations are presented to show the different role of the eigenfunction in the two cases.
