In this work, a semianalytic solution for the acoustic streaming phenomenon, generated by standing waves in Maxwell fluids through a two-dimensional microchannel (resonator), is derived. The mathematical model is non-dimensionalized and several dimensionless parameters that characterize the phenomenon arise: the ratio between the oscillation amplitude of the resonator and the half-wavelength ($\eta =2A/\lambda _{a}$); the product of the fluid relaxation time times the angular frequency known as the Deborah number ($De=\lambda _{1}\omega$); the aspect ratio between the microchannel height and the wavelength ($\epsilon =2 H_{0}/\lambda _{a}$); and the ratio between half the height of the microchannel and the thickness of the viscous boundary layer ($\alpha =H_{0}/\delta _{\nu }$). In the limit when $\eta \ll 1$, we obtain the hydrodynamic behaviour of the system using a regular perturbation method. In the present work, we show that the acoustic streaming speed is proportional to $\alpha ^{2.65}De^{1.9}$, and the acoustic pressure varies as $\alpha ^{6/5}De^{1/2}$. Also, we have found that the growth of inner vortex is due to convective terms in the Maxwell rheological equation. Furthermore, the velocity antinodes show a high dependency on the Deborah number, highlighting the fluid's viscoelastic properties and the appearance of resonance points. Due to the limitations of perturbation methods, we will only analyse narrow microchannels.

Before weaning, breast milk is the physiological form of neonatal nutrition, providing pups with all nutrient requirements. Maternal low-protein diet (LPD) during pregnancy and lactation induces adverse changes in key maternal organs, which have negative effects on pup development. We studied the effects of maternal LPD on liver weight, mammary gland (MG) cell differentiation, milk composition and production and pup development throughout lactation. We fed rats with control (C) or LPD (R) during pregnancy and lactation. At 7 d early, 14 d mid and 21 d late lactation stages, maternal biochemical parameters, body, liver and MG weights were analysed. MG cell differentiation was analysed by haematoxylin and eosin staining; milk nutrient composition and production were studied; pup body, liver and brain weights, hippocampal arachidonic acid (AA) and DHA were quantified. Results showed lower body and liver weights, minor MG cell differentiation and lower serum insulin and TAG in R compared with C. R milk contained less protein and higher AA at early and mid stages compared with C. R pup milk and fat intake were lower at all stages. R protein intake at early and mid stages and DHA intake at mid and late stages were lower compared with C. In R pups, lower body, liver and brain weights were associated with decreased hippocampal AA and DHA. We conclude that maternal LPD impairs liver and MG function and induces significant changes in maternal milk composition, pup milk intake and organ development.

The dispersion coefficient of a passive solute in a steady-state pure electro-osmotic flow (EOF) of a viscoelastic liquid, whose rheological behaviour follows the simplified Phan-Thien–Tanner (sPTT) model, along a parallel flat plate microchannel, is studied. The walls of the microchannel are assumed to have modulated and low $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$ potentials, which vary slowly in the axial direction in a sinusoidal manner. The flow field required to obtain the dispersion coefficient was solved using the lubrication approximation theory (LAT). The solution of the electric potential is based on the Debye–Hückel approximation for a symmetric $(z:z)$ electrolyte. The viscoelasticity of the fluid is observed to notably amplify the axial distribution of the effective dispersion coefficients due to the variation in the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$ potentials of the walls. The problem was formulated for two cases: when the Debye layer thickness (EDL) was on the order of unity (thick EDL) and in the limit where the thickness of the EDL was very small compared with the height of the microchannel (thin EDL limit). Due to the coupling between the nonlinear governing equations and the sPTT fluid model, they were replaced by their approximate linearized forms and solved in the limit of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}\ll 1$ using the regular perturbation technique. Here $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}$ is the amplitude of the sinusoidal function of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$ potentials. Additionally, the numerical solution of the simplified governing equations was also obtained for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}=O(1)$ and compared with the approximate solution, showing excellent agreement for $0\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D700}\leqslant 0.3$. Note that the dispersion coefficient primarily depends on the Deborah number, on the ratio of the half-height of the microchannel to the Debye length, and on the assumed variation in the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$ potentials of the walls.

Maternal obesity programmes offspring development. We addressed maternal obesity effects induced by high-fat diets on maternal mammary gland (MG) structure and function and offspring brain, liver and fat outcomes. Mothers were fed control (C, n 5) or obesogenic (MO, n 5) diet from the time they were weaned through pregnancy beginning at 120 d, through lactation. At offspring postnatal day (PND) 20, milk leptin and nutrients were determined. At the end of lactation, maternal liver and MG fatty acid profile were measured. Desaturase (Δ6D and Δ5D) and elongase (ELOVL 5 and ELOVL 2) protein was measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting (WB) in the liver and WB in the MG. In mothers, liver, MG and milk fat content were higher in MO than in C. Liver arachidonic acid (AA) and EPA and MG EPA were lower in MO than in C. Liver desaturases were higher in MO. The MG was heavier in MO than in C, with decreased Δ5D expression in MO. Desaturases and elongases were immunolocalised in parenchymal cells of both groups. Milk yield, water, carbohydrate content, EPA and DHA were lower, whereas milk leptin and AA were higher in MO than in C. At PND 21 and 36, brain weight was less and fat depots were greater in MO offspring than in C. MO decreased male absolute brain weight but not female absolute brain weight. In conclusion, maternal obesity induced by an obesogenic diet negatively affects maternal liver and MG function with the production of significant changes in milk composition. Maternal obesity adversely affects offspring metabolism and development.

Stegophorus macronectes (Johnston & Mawson, 1942) is a gastrointestinal parasite found in Antarctic seabirds. The original description of the species, which was based only on females, is poor and fragmented with some unclear diagnostic characters. This study provides new morphometric and molecular data on this previously poorly described parasite. Nuclear rDNA sequences (18S, 5.8S, 28S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions) were isolated from S. macronectes specimens collected from the chinstrap penguin Pygoscelis antarctica Forster on Deception Island, Antarctica. Using 18S rDNA sequences, phylogenetic analyses (maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference) of the order Spirurida were performed to determine the phylogenetic location of this species. Primer pairs of the ITS regions were designed for genus-level identification of specimens, regardless of their cycle, as an alternative to coprological methods. The utility of this molecular method for identification of morphologically altered specimens is also discussed.

Predisposition to offspring metabolic dysfunction due to poor maternal nutrition differs with the developmental stage at exposure. Post-weaning nutrition also influences offspring phenotype in either adverse or beneficial ways. We studied a well-established rat maternal protein-restriction model to determine whether post-weaning dietary intervention improves adverse outcomes produced by a deficient maternal nutritional environment in pregnancy. Pregnant rats were fed a controlled diet (C, 20% casein) during pregnancy and lactation (CC) or were fed a restricted diet (R, 10% casein isocaloric diet) during pregnancy and C diet during lactation (RC). After weaning, the offspring were fed the C diet. At postnatal day (PND) 70 (young adulthood), female offspring either continued with the C diet (CCC and RCC) or were fed commercial Chow Purina 5001 (I) to further divide the animals into dietary intervention groups CCI and RCI. Another group of mothers and offspring were fed I throughout (III). Offspring food intake was averaged between PND 95–110 and 235–250 and carcass and liver compositions were measured at PND 25 and 250. Leptin (PND 110 and 250) and serum glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol (PND 250) levels were measured. Statistical analysis was carried out using ANOVA. At PND 25, body and liver weights were similar between groups; however, CCC and RCC carcass protein:fat ratios were lower compared with III diet. At PND 110 and 250, offspring CCC and RCC had higher body weight, food intake and serum leptin compared with CCI and RCI. CCI had lower carcass fat and increased protein compared with CCC and improved fasting glucose and triglycerides. Adult dietary intervention partially overcomes adverse effects of programming. Further studies are needed to determine the mechanisms involved.

In this work the purely electro-osmotic flow of a viscoelastic liquid, which obeys the simplified Phan-Thien–Tanner (sPTT) constitutive equation, is solved numerically and asymptotically by using the lubrication approximation. The analysis includes Joule heating effects caused by an imposed electric field, where the viscosity function, relaxation time and electrical conductivity of the liquid are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Owing to Joule heating effects, temperature gradients in the liquid make the fluid properties change within the microchannel, altering the electric potential and flow fields. A consequence of the above is the appearance of an induced pressure gradient along the microchannel, which in turn modifies the normal plug-like electro-osmotic velocity profiles. In addition, it is pointed out that, depending on the fluid rheology and the used values of the dimensionless parameters, the velocity, temperature and pressure profiles in the fluid are substantially modified. Also, the finite thermal conductivity of the microchannel wall was considered in the analysis. The dimensionless temperature profiles in the fluid and the microchannel wall are obtained as function of the dimensionless parameters involved in the analysis, and the interactions between the coupled momentum, thermal energy and potential electric equations are examined in detail. A comparison between the numerical predictions and the asymptotic solutions was made, and reasonable agreement was found.

Linseed (LO) and soyabean (SO) oils were evaluated as fish-oil (FO) substitutes in the diets of marketable-sized gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). Practical diets were designed factorially with the lipid added as follows (%): FO 100, LO 60+FO 40, LO 80+FO 20, SO 60+FO 40, SO 80+FO 20. The effects of experimental diets on growth, fatty acids patterns in liver and muscle, flesh quality variables and activities of selected enzymes involved in lipid synthesis and catabolism were determined at the end of a 7-month trial. Fatty acid composition of liver and muscle generally reflected the fatty acid composition of the diets. The n−3 PUFA levels were significantly reduced by the inclusion of vegetable oils. This tendency was more pronounced for EPA than for docosahexaenoic acid. The n−3:n−6 fatty acid ratio reached the lowest values in fish fed the SO diets; this was associated with a higher liver lipid deposition. No differences were found in fillet texture and pH. However, under conditions of forced peroxidation, muscles from fish fed the SO diets had lower peroxidation levels. Vegetable oil substitution decreased lipogenesis in liver and this effect was greatest at the highest substitution level. In contrast, muscle β-oxidation enzymes had increased activities with vegetable oil substitution. Thus, the lower hepatic lipogenesis was correlated with an increased lipid utilisation in muscle. It is concluded that growth and lipid metabolism were affected by experimental diets.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) hepatocytes were cultured under simulated conditions of varying nutritional status to explore the short-term modulation by dietary substrates of the main lipogenic enzymes: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), malic enzyme (ME), ATP-citrate lyase (ACL), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACoAC) and fatty acid synthetase (FAS). Primary cultures were individually exposed to varying amounts of glucose, hydrolysed casein and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for 12 h. A second set of experiments was designed to evaluate the effects of mixing different relative amounts of these macronutrients in the culture medium. Glucose concentrations of up to 20–25 mM SHOWED A STIMULATORY EFFECT ON G6PD, ME, ACL AND ACOAC ACTIVITY (P<0·05) WHILE AN EARLIER INHIBITORY EFFECT ON FAS WAS OBSERVED AT 10–20 Mm glucose (P<0·05). The use of hydrolysed casein as a nutritional source of amino acids inhibited the activity of FAS and ME (P<0·05), and stimulated G6PD, ACoAC and ACL activity (P<0·05). Low levels of linolenic acid exerted a stimulatory effect on all the lipogenic enzymes assayed (P<0·05) with the exception of FAS, and increased amounts showed some inhibition of lipogenic activities (P<0·05). Eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid showed a similar effect, although the former strongly inhibited FAS activity while the latter showed greater potential to inhibit ACoAC and G6PD. A complete change in the relative levels of glucose, hydrolysed casein and PUFA in turn led to changes in the enzyme activity patterns observed. The present study shows the feasibility of exploring the direct regulation of lipogenesis in isolated fish cells by varying the relative amounts of main macronutrients, mimicking in vivo dietary conditions. It is felt that such an approach may serve to investigate the macronutrient regulation of other metabolic pathways.

The effects of dietary fish oil and digestible protein (DP) levels on muscle fatty acid composition and susceptibility to lipid peroxidation were studied in two representative fish species for human nutrition, from fresh and seawater, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). In rainbow trout, higher concentrations of dietary fat and DP led to higher weight gain (g/d) (P = 0.001 and P = 0.043 respectively). Additionally, an interaction effect was observed in this species, since the effect of DP was only evident when the dietary fat concentration was low (P = 0.043). A similar tendency was also observed in European sea bass, although with less marked differences among nutritional treatments. Trout fed on diets with a higher concentration of dietary fat had higher concentrations of intramuscular total and neutral lipids in the dorsal muscle (P = 0.005). Increased levels of dietary DP led to significantly lower concentrations of polar lipids in the dorsal muscle of both rainbow trout (P = 0.005) and European sea bass (P = 0.006). In the neutral fraction of intramuscular lipids of dorsal muscle the concentration of n-3 fatty acids was positively affected by the dietary fat concentration in both rainbow trout (P = 0.04) and sea bass (P = 0.001). Muscle homogenates from trout and sea bass fed on diets rich in fish oil showed a significantly higher susceptibility to oxidation than muscle homogenates from fish fed on low-fat diets (P = 0.001). The higher DP concentration also increased susceptibility to oxidation. Moreover, in rainbow trout an interaction effect was observed where the pro-oxidant effect was of higher magnitude when the dietary concentration of both nutrients, fat and protein, was high (P = 0.004).
