We present results from studies of the structure and dynamics of clathrate hydrates of three cyclic ethers by neutron diffraction and preliminary results on molecular dynamics simulations. Recent results from neutron powder diffraction and quasielastic neutron scattering of studies of propylene oxide (PO, C3H6O) and its isomer trimethyelene oxide (TMO, C3H6O), are compared with structural results obtained previously for tetrahydrofuran (THF, C3H5O). Experimental evidence of distortions of the host structures with temperature is discussed in light of the findings from quasielastic neutron scattering, which indicate distinct regions of high-temperature and low-temperature rotational dynamics and a temperature dependence related to the size of the guest. Preliminary MD results indicate a general expansion of the lattice with temperature resulting in increased volume available to PO.

Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy and low-temperature ultrasonic attenuation measurements are reported for filled and unfilled skutterudites and for Ge-clathrates. These data reveal that an unusual elastic behavior complements the thermal properties of the filled skutterudites and indicate the presence of low-energy vibrational modes. The attenuation at low-temperatures in the single-crystalline Ge-clathrate is glasslike and can be described by the same phenomenological Tunneling Model that has been developed to describe the low-temperature properties of amorphous solids.

We present initial assessments of the thermoelectric properties of two ternary tellurides with known crystal structures, Tl2GeTeM5 and Tl2SnTe5. Tl2SnTe5 appears to have a p-type figure of merit about the same as that of Bi2Te3, the best thermoelectric material among binary compounds. A good figure of merit is possible because the lattice thermal conductivity is very low. Based on neutron diffraction data, we have calculated atomic displacement parameters and thermal expansion coefficients. The atomic displacement parameters give some understanding of the low lattice thermal conductivity.

The pyrochlore structure type, A1−2 B2 O6Y0−1 Fd3m Z=8, is a common constituent of polyphase, crystalline waste forms. Naturally occurring minerals with the same structure often occur in the radiation damaged, electron-diffraction amorphous, “metamict” state; and therefore, a principal concern with phases of this structure type is the effect of alpha-recoil damage associated with the presence of actinides. In this paper we outline crystal chemical constraints on the formation of novel actinide pyrochlores.
