The spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are being used to construct a catalogue of QSO absorption lines, for use in studies of abundances, relevant radiation fields, number counts as a function of redshift, and other matters, including the evolution of these parameters. The catalogue includes intervening, associated, and BAL absorbers, in order to allow a clearer definition of the relationships between these three classes. We describe the motivation for and the data products of the project to build the SDSS QSO absorption line catalogue.

Using a large sample of MgII absorbers with $0.4<z<2.2$ detected by Nestor et al. (2005) in the Early Data Release of the SDSS, we present new constraints on the physical properties of these systems based on two statistical analyses: (i) by computing the ratio between the composite spectra of quasars with and without absorbers, we measure the reddening effects induced by these intervening systems; and (ii) by stacking SDSS images centred on quasars with strong MgII absorption lines and isolating the excess light around the PSF, we measure the mean luminosity and colours of the absorbing galaxies. This statistical approach does not require any spectroscopic follow up and allows us to constrain the photometric properties of absorber systems.

We propose a method for detecting gravitational magnification of distant sources, like quasars, due to absorber systems detected in their spectra. We first motivate the use of metal absorption lines rather than Lyman-$\alpha$ lines, then we show how to relate the observed moments of the source magnitude distribution to the mass distribution of absorbers. In order to illustrate the feasibility of the method, we use a simple model to estimate the amplitude of the effect expected for MgII absorption lines. Our model suggests that quasars behind strong MgII absorbers are in average brightened by $-0.05$ to $-0.2$ magnitude due to magnification. One must therefore revisit the claim that, in magnitude limited surveys, quasars with strong absorbers tend to be missed due to extinction effects.
