We present a workflow to track icebergs in proglacial fjords using oblique time-lapse photos and the Lucas-Kanade optical flow algorithm. We employ the workflow at LeConte Bay, Alaska, where we ran five time-lapse cameras between April 2016 and September 2017, capturing more than 400 000 photos at frame rates of 0.5–4.0 min−1. Hourly to daily average velocity fields in map coordinates illustrate dynamic currents in the bay, with dominant downfjord velocities (exceeding 0.5 m s−1 intermittently) and several eddies. Comparisons with simultaneous Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements yield best agreement for the uppermost ADCP levels (~ 12 m and above), in line with prevalent small icebergs that trace near-surface currents. Tracking results from multiple cameras compare favorably, although cameras with lower frame rates (0.5 min−1) tend to underestimate high flow speeds. Tests to determine requisite temporal and spatial image resolution confirm the importance of high image frame rates, while spatial resolution is of secondary importance. Application of our procedure to other fjords will be successful if iceberg concentrations are high enough and if the camera frame rates are sufficiently rapid (at least 1 min−1 for conditions similar to LeConte Bay).

Joteite (IMA2012-091), Ca2CuAl[AsO4][AsO3(OH)]2(OH)2·5H2O, is a new mineral from the Jote mine, Tierra Amarilla, Copiapó Province, Atacama, Chile. The mineral is a late-stage, low-temperature, secondary mineral occurring with conichalcite, mansfieldite, pharmacoalumite, pharmacosiderite and scorodite in narrow seams and vughs in the oxidized upper portion of a hydrothermal sulfide vein hosted by volcanoclastic rocks. Crystals occur as sky-blue to greenish-blue thin blades, flattened and twinned on {001}, up to ~300 μm in length, and exhibiting the forms {001}, {010}, {10}, {20} and {111}. The blades are commonly intergrown in wheat-sheaf-like bundles, less commonly in sprays, and sometimes aggregated as dense crusts and cavity linings. The mineral is transparent and has a very pale blue streak and vitreous lustre. The Mohs hardness is estimated at 2 to 3, the tenacity is brittle, and the fracture is curved. It has one perfect cleavage on {001}. The calculated density based on the empirical formula is 3.056 g/cm3. It is optically biaxial (–) with α = 1.634(1), β = 1.644(1), γ = 1.651(1) (white light), 2Vmeas = 78(2)° and 2Vcalc = 79.4°. The mineral exhibits weak dispersion, r < v. The optical orientation is X ≈ c*; Y ≈ b*. The pleochroism is Z (greenish blue) > Y (pale greenish blue) > X (colourless). The normalized electron-microprobe analyses (average of 5) provided: CaO 15.70, CuO 11.22, Al2O38.32, As2O546.62, H2O 18.14 (structure), total 100 wt.%. The empirical formula (based on 19 O a.p.f.u.) is: Ca1.98Cu1.00Al1.15As2.87H14.24O19. The mineral is slowly soluble in cold, concentrated HCl. Joteite is triclinic, P, with the cell parameters: a = 6.0530(2), b = 10.2329(3), c = 12.9112(4) Å, α = 87.572(2), β = 78.480(2), γ = 78.697(2)°, V = 768.40(4) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [dobs Å (I)(hkl)]: 12.76(100)(001), 5.009(23)(020), 4.206(26)(120,003,121), 3.92(24)(022,02,02), 3.40(25)(13), 3.233(19)(031,023,123,03), 2.97(132,201) and 2.91(15)(22,13). In the structure of joteite (R1 = 7.72% for 6003 Fo > 4σF), AsO4 and AsO3 (OH) tetrahedra, AlO6 octahedra and Cu2+O5 square pyramids share corners to form sheets parallel to {001}. In addition, 7- and 8-coordinate Ca polyhedra link to the periphery of the sheets yielding thick slabs. Between the slabs are unconnected AsO3(OH) tetrahedra, which link the slabs only via hydrogen bonding. The Raman spectrum shows features consistent with OH and/or H2O in multiple structural environments. The region between the slabs may host excess Al in place of some As.

The new mineral canutite (IMA2013-070), NaMn3[AsO4][AsO3(OH)]2, was found at two different locations at the Torrecillas mine, Salar Grande, Iquique Province, Chile, where it occurs as a secondary alteration phase in association with anhydrite, halite, lavendulan, magnesiokoritnigite, pyrite, quartz and scorodite. Canutite is reddish brown in colour. It forms as prisms elongated on [20] and exhibiting the forms {010}, {100}, {10}, {201} and {102}, or as tablets flattened on {102} and exhibiting the forms {102} and {110}. Crystals are transparent with a vitreous lustre. The mineral has a pale tan streak, Mohs hardness of 2½, brittle tenacity, splintery fracture and two perfect cleavages, on {010} and {101}. The calculated density is 4.112 g cm−3. Optically, canutite is biaxial (+) with α = 1.712(3), β = 1.725(3) and γ = 1.756(3) (measured in white light). The measured 2V is 65.6(4)°, the dispersion is r < v (slight), the optical orientation is Z = b; X ^ a = 18° in obtuse β and pleochroism is imperceptible. The mineral is slowly soluble in cold, dilute HCl. The empirical formula (for tabular crystals from near the mineshaft), determined from electron - microprobe analyses, is (Na1.05Mn2.64Mg0.34Cu0.14Co0.03)∑4.20As3O12H1.62. Canutite is monoclinic, C2/c, a = 12.3282(4), b = 12.6039(5), c = 6.8814(5) Å, β = 113.480(8)°, V = 980.72(10) Å3 and Z = 4. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 6.33(34)(020), 4.12(26)(21), 3.608(29)(310,31), 3.296(57)(12), 3.150(28)(002,131), 2.819(42)(400,041,330), 2.740(100)(240,02,112) and 1.5364(31)(multiple). The structure, refined to R1 = 2.33% for 1089 Fo > 4σF reflections, shows canutite to be isostructural with protonated members of the alluaudite group.

Camaronesite (IMA 2012-094), [Fe3+(H2O)2(PO3OH)]2(SO4)·1–2H2O, is a new mineral from near the village of Cuya in the Camarones Valley, Arica Province, Chile. The mineral is a low-temperature, secondary mineral occurring in a sulfate assemblage with anhydrite, botryogen, chalcanthite, copiapite, halotrichite, hexahydrite, hydroniumjarosite, pyrite, römerite, rozenite and szomolnokite. Lavender-coloured crystals up to several mm across form dense intergrowths. More rarely crystals occur as drusy aggregates of tablets up to 0.5 mm in diameter and 0.02 mm thick. Tablets are flattened on {001} and exhibit the forms {001}, {104}, {015} and {018}. The mineral is transparent with white streak and vitreous lustre. The Mohs hardness is 2½, the tenacity is brittle and the fracture is irregular, conchoidal and stepped. Camaronesite has one perfect cleavage on {001}. The measured and calculated densities are 2.43(1) and 2.383 g/cm3, respectively. The mineral is optically uniaxial (+) with ω = 1.612(1) and ε = 1.621(1) (white light). The pleochroism is O (pale lavender) > E (colourless). Electron-microprobe analyses provided Fe2O331.84, P2O529.22, SO315.74, H2O 23.94 (based on O analyses), total 100.74 wt.%. The empirical formula (based on 2 P a.p.f.u.) is: Fe1.94(PO3OH)2(S0.96O4)(H2O)4·1.46H2O. The mineral is slowly soluble in concentrated HCl and extremely slowly soluble in concentrated H2SO4. Camaronesite is trigonal, R32, with cell parameters:a = 9.0833(5), c = 42.944(3) Å, V = 3068.5(3) Å3 and Z = 9. The eight strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [dobs Å (I)(hkl)]: 7.74(45)(101), 7.415(100)(012), 4.545(72)(110), 4.426(26)(018), 3.862(32)(021,202,116), 3.298(93)(027,119), 3.179(25)(208) and 2.818(25)(1·1·12,125). In the structure of camaronesite (R1 = 2.28% for 1138 Fo > 4σF), three types of Fe octahedra are linked by corner sharing with (PO3OH) tetrahedra to form polyhedral layers perpendicular to c with composition [Fe3+(H2O)2(PO3OH)]. Two such layers are joined through SO4 tetrahedra (in two half-occupied orientations) to form thick slabs of composition [Fe3+(H2O)2(PO3OH)]2(SO4). Between the slabs are partially occupied H2O groups. The only linkages between the slabs are hydrogen bonds. The most distinctive component in the structure consists of two Fe octahedra linked to one another by three PO4 tetrahedra yielding an [Fe2(PO4)3] unit. This unit is also the key component in the sodium super-ionic conductor (NASICON) structure and has been referred to as the lantern unit. The polyhedral layers in the structure of camaronesite are similar to those in the structure of taranakite. The Raman spectrum exhibits peaks consistent with sulfate, phosphate, water and OH groups.

The new mineral torrecillasite (IMA2013-112), Na(As,Sb)43+O6Cl, was found at the Torrecillas mine, Iquique Province, Chile, where it occurs as a secondary alteration phase in association with anhydrite, cinnabar, gypsum, halite, lavendulan, magnesiokoritnigite, marcasite, quartz, pyrite, scorodite, wendwilsonite and other potentially new As-bearing minerals. Torrecillasite occurs as thin colourless prisms up to 0.4 mm long in jack-straw aggregates, as very thin fibres in puff balls and as massive intergrowths of needles. Prisms are elongated on [100] with diamond-shaped cross-section and irregular terminations. Crystals are transparent, with adamantine lustre and white streak. The Mohs hardness is 2½, tenacity is brittle and fracture is irregular. Cleavage on (001) is likely. The calculated density is 4.056 g cm−3. Optically, torrecillasite is biaxial (−) with α = 1.800(5), β = 1.96(1), γ = 2.03(calc.) (measured in white light). The measured 2V is 62.1(5)°, no dispersion or pleochroism were observed, the optical orientation is X = c, Y = b, Z = a. The mineral is very slowly soluble in H2O, slowly soluble in dilute HCl and rapidly soluble in concentrated HCl. The empirical formula, determined from electron-microprobe analyses, is (Na1.03Mg0.02)∑1.05(As3.39Sb0.62)∑4.01O6.07Cl0.93. Torrecillasite is orthorhombic, Pmcn, a = 5.2580(9), b = 8.0620(13), c = 18.654(3) Å, V = 790.7(2) Å3 and Z = 4. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 4.298(33)(111), 4.031(78)(014,020), 3.035(100)(024,122), 2.853(39)(115,123), 2.642(84)(124,200), 2.426(34)(125), 1.8963(32)(225) and 1.8026(29)(0·1·10,233). The structure, refined to R1 = 4.06% for 814 Fo >4σF reflections, contains a neutral, wavy As2O3 layer parallel to (001) consisting of As3+O3 pyramids that share O atoms to form six-membered rings. Successive layers are flipped relative to one another and successive interlayer regions contain alternately either Na or Cl atoms. Torrecillasite is isostructural with synthetic orthorhombic NaAs4O6Br.

Calciodelrioite, ideally Ca(VO3)2(H2O)4, is a new mineral (IMA 2012-031) from the uraniumvanadium deposits of the eastern Colorado Plateau in the USA. The type locality is the West Sunday mine, Slick Rock district, San Miguel County, Colorado. The new mineral occurs on fracture surfaces in corvusite- and montroseite-impregnated sandstone and forms as a result of the oxidative alteration of these phases. At the West Sunday mine, calciodelrioite is associated with celestine, gypsum, huemulite, metarossite, pascoite and rossite. The mineral occurs as transparent colourless needles, bundles of tan to brown needles and star bursts of nearly black broad blades composed of tightly intergrown needles. Crystals are elongate and striated parallel to [100], exhibiting the prismatic forms {001} and {011} and having terminations possibly composed of the forms {100} and {61}. The mineral is transparent and has a white streak, subadamantine lustre, Mohs hardness of about 2½, brittle tenacity, irregular to splintery fracture, one perfect cleavage on {001} and possibly one or more additional cleavages parallel to [100]. Calciodelrioite is soluble in water. The calculated density is 2.451 g cm– 3. It is optically biaxial (+) with α = 1.733(3), β = 1.775(3), γ = 1.825(3) (white light), 2Vmeas = 87.3(9)° and 2Vcalc = 87°. The optical orientation is X = b; Z ≈ a. No pleochroism was observed. Electronmicroprobe analyses of two calciodelrioite samples and type delrioite provided the empirical formulae (Ca0.88Sr0.07Na0.04K0.01)Σ1.00(V1.00O3)2(H2.01O)4, (Ca0.76Sr0.21Na0.01)Σ0.98(V1.00O3)2(H2.01O)4 and (Sr0.67Ca0.32)Σ0.99(V1.00O3)2(H2.00O)4, respectively. Calciodelrioite is monoclinic, I2/a, with unit-cell parameters a = 14.6389(10), b = 6.9591(4), c = 17.052(2) Å, β = 102.568(9)°, V = 1695.5(3) Å3 and Z = 8. The seven strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [listed as dobs Å (I)(hkl)] are as follows: 6.450(100)(011); 4.350(16)(013); 3.489(18)(020); 3.215(17)(022); 3.027(50)(multiple); 2.560(28)(15,413); 1.786(18)(028). In the structure of calciodelrioite (refined to R1 = 3.14% for 1216 Fo > 4σF), V5+O5 polyhedra link by sharing edges to form a zigzag divanadate [VO3] chain along a, similar to that in the structure of rossite. The chains are linked via bonds to Ca atoms, which also bond to H2O groups, yielding CaO3(H2O)6 polyhedra. The Ca polyhedra form a chain along b. Each of the two symmetrically independent VO5 polyhedra has two short vanadyl bonds and three long equatorial bonds. Calciodelrioite and delrioite are isostructural and are the endmembers of the series Ca(VO3)2(H2O)4–Sr(VO3)2(H2O)4. Calciodelrioite is dimorphous with rossite, which has a similar structure; however, the smaller 8-coordinate Ca site in rossite does not accommodate Sr.

The new mineral magnesiokoritnigite (IMA 2013-049), ideally Mg(AsO3OH)·H2O, was found at the Torrecillas mine, Salar Grande, Iquique Province, Chile, where it occurs as a secondary alteration phase in association with anhydrite, chudobaite, halite, lavendulan, quartz and scorodite. Crystals of magnesiokoritnigite are colourless to pale-pink, thin to thick laths up to 2 mm long. Laths are elongated on [001], flattened on {010} and exhibit the forms {010}, {110}, {10}, {101}, {031} and {01}. The crystals also occur in dense deep-pink intergrowths. Crystals are transparent with a vitreous lustre. The mineral has a white streak, Mohs hardness of ∼3, brittle tenacity, conchoidal fracture and one perfect cleavage on {101}. The measured and calculated densities are 2.95(3) and 2.935 g cm– 3, respectively. Optically, magnesiokoritnigite is biaxial (+) with α = 1.579(1), β = 1.586(1) and γ = 1.620(1) (measured in white light). The measured 2V is 50(2)° and the calculated 2V is 50°. Dispersion is r < v, medium. The optical orientation is Y ≈ b; Z ^ c = 36° in obtuse β (note pseudomonoclinic symmetry). The mineral is non-pleochroic. The empirical formula, determined from electron-microprobe analyses, is (Mg0.94Cu0.03Mn0.02Ca0.01)Σ 1.00As0.96O5H3.19. Magnesiokoritnigite is triclinic, P, with a = 7.8702(7), b = 15.8081(6), c = 6.6389(14) Å, α = 90.814(6), β = 96.193(6), γ = 90.094(7)°, V = 821.06(19) Å3 and Z = 8. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å (I)(hkl)]: 7.96(100)(020), 4.80(54)(101), 3.791(85)(10,210,1,31), 3.242(56)(02,1,012), 3.157(92)(21,30,230), 3.021(61)(11,141,21,221), 2.798(41)(02,032) and 1.908(43)(multiple). The structure, refined to R1 = 5.74% for 2360 Fo > 4σF reflections, shows magnesiokoritnigite to be isostructural with koritnigite and cobaltkoritnigite.

Pauladamsite (IMA2015-005), Cu4(SeO3)(SO4)(OH)4·2H2O, is a new mineral from the Santa Rosa mine, Darwin district, Inyo County, California, USA, where it occurs as a secondary oxidation-zone mineral in association with brochantite, chalcanthite, gypsum, ktenasite, mimetite, schulenbergite and smithsonite on limonitic gossan. Pauladamsite forms green, multiply twinned blades up to 0.5 mm long grouped in radial sprays. The streak is pale green. Crystals are transparent and have vitreous to silky lustre. The Mohs hardness is ∼2, the tenacity is brittle, the fracture is irregular and crystals exhibit one perfect cleavage on [001]. The calculated density is 3.535 g/cm3. Electron microprobe analyses provided: CuO 48.96, ZnO 3.56, SeO2 18.82, SO3 13.90, H2O 13.29 (calc.), total 98.53 wt.%. The empirical formula (based on 13 O apfu) is: (Cu3.55Zn0.25)∑3.80Se0.98SO13H8.50. Pauladamsite is triclinic, P1, a = 6.0742(7), b = 8.4147(11), c = 10.7798 (15) Å, α = 103.665(7), β = 95.224(7), γ = 90.004(6)°, V = 533.03(12) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dobs in Å(I)(hkl)]: 10.5(46)(011); 3.245(100)(001); 5.81(50)(011); 2.743(49)(112); 3.994(67)(012); 3.431(23)(1̄12,1̄2̄1,1̄20); 2.692(57)(03̄2,1̄22,2̄1̄2); and 2.485(39)(21̄2,1̄3̄2,02̄4). The structure of pauladamsite (R1 = 10.6% for 2086 Fo > 4σF) contains Cu2+O6 octahedra, SO4 tetrahedra and Se4+O3 pyramids. There are four different CuO6 octahedra, each of which exhibits typical Jahn-Teller distortion, with four short equatorial Cu–O bonds and two much longer apical Cu–O bonds. The CuO6 octahedra share edges to form five-octahedra-wide bands extending along [100]. Adjacent bands are connected in the [011̄] direction by bridging SO4 tetrahedra and in the [011] direction by bridging Se4+O3 pyramids, thereby forming a framework.

A comparative study is presented of the chemistry and crystallography of zinc-bearing strunzites from Hagendorf Süd, Bavaria, Germany and the Sitio do Castelo mine, Folgosinho, Portugal. Electron microprobe analyses of samples from the two localities show quite different cation substitutions. The Hagendorf Süd mineral is a Zn-bearing ferristrunzite, with compositional zoning due to Zn2+ replacing predominantly Fe3+ as well as minor Mn2+, whereas the Portugese mineral is a Zn-bearing strunzite, in which Zn2+ replaces Mn2+, with minor replacement of Fe3+ by Mn3+. Zincostrunzite, with dominant Zn in the interlayer octahedrally coordinated site, is a new strunzite-group mineral that has been characterized at both locations. Analysis of single-crystal synchrotron data for zinc-bearing ferristrunzite and zincostrunzite crystals from Hagendorf Süd show that the structures of both minerals contain zeolitic water in the interlayer region. The formula for strunzite-group minerals containing the zeolitic water is MFe23+(PO4)2(OH)2·6.5H2O, M=Fe, Mn, Zn. This formulation agrees with that found for zincostrunzite from the Sitio do Castelo mine, but differs from that reported previously for strunzite, MFe2+(PO4)2(OH)2·6H2O, which has no interlayer water. Interestingly, the zincostrunzites from the two localities differ in the location of the interlayer water molecule, with a corresponding difference in the H bonding.

Ferribushmakinite (IMA2014-055), Pb2Fe3+(PO4)(VO4)(OH), the Fe3+ analogue of bushmakinite, is a new mineral from the Silver Coin mine, Valmy, Iron Point district, Humboldt County, Nevada, USA, where it occurs as a low-temperature secondary mineral in association with plumbogummite, mottramite, Br-rich chlorargyrite and baryte on massive quartz. Ferribushmakinite forms yellow slightly flattened prisms up to 0.2 mm long growing in X and sixling twins. The streak is pale yellow. Crystals are translucent and have adamantine lustre. The Mohs hardness is ∼2, the tenacity is brittle, the fracture is irregular to splintery and crystals exhibit one or two fair cleavages in the [010] zone. The calculated density is 6.154 g/cm3. Electron microprobe analyses provided: PbO 63.69, CaO 0.07, CuO 1.11, Fe2O3 7.63, Al2O3 1.63, V2O5 12.65, As2O5 3.09, P2O58.63, H2O 1.50 (structure), total 100.00 wt.% (normalized). The empirical formula (based on nine O a.p.f.u.) is: (Pb1.99Ca0.01)Σ2.00(Fe0.66Al0.22Cu0.10)Σ0.98(V0.97P0.85As0.19)Σ2.01O7.84(OH)1.16. Ferribushmakinite is monoclinic, P21/m, a = 7.7719(10), b = 5.9060(7), c = 8.7929(12) Å, β = 111.604(8)°, V = 375.24(9) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dobs in Å (I)(hkl)]: 4.794(46)(011); 3.245(84)(211); 2.947(100)(020,212,103); 2.743(49)(112); 2.288(30)(220); 1.8532(27)(314,403); 1.8084(27)(multiple); and 1.7204(28)(312,114,321). Ferribushmakinite is a member of the brackebuschite supergroup. Its structure (R1 = 3.83% for 577 Fo > 4σF) differs from that of bushmakinite only in the dominance of Fe3+ over Al in the octahedral site.

Crimsonite (IMA2014-095), PbFe3+2(PO 4)2(OH)2, the phosphate analogue of carminite, is a new mineral from the Silver Coin mine, Valmy, Iron Point district, Humboldt County, Nevada, USA, where it occurs as a low-temperature secondary mineral in association with fluorwavellite, goethite, hematite, hentschelite, plumbogummite and variscite on quartz. Crimsonite occurs in subparallel aggregates of deep red blades or plates flattened on {100} and up to 0.1 mm in maximum dimension. The streak is light purplish orange. Crystals are transparent and have adamantine lustre. The Mohs hardness is ∼3½, the tenacity is brittle, the fracture is irregular to splintery and an imperfect cleavage is likely on {101}. The calculated density is 5.180 g/cm3. Crimsonite is optically biaxial (+), with 2V = 85.5(5)° and γ – α = 0.011. Using the Gladstone-Dale relationship, the calculated indices of refraction are α = 2.021, β = 2.026 and γ = 2.032. The optical orientation is X = b; Y = a; Z = c and the pleochroism is X light orange, Y light yellow, Z red brown; Y < X < Z. Electron microprobe analyses provided PbO 40.69, CaO 0.60, ZnO 0.72, CuO 0.13, Fe2O3 23.36, Al2O3 0.34, V2O5 0.70, As2O5 12.05, P2O5 16.03, SO3 0.33 and H2O 3.64 (structure), total 98.59 wt.%. The empirical formula (based on 10 O apfu) is (Pb1.06Ca0.06)∑1.12(Fe1.71Zn0.05Al0.04Cu0.01)∑1.81(P1.32As0.61V0.05S0.02)∑2.00O8[(OH)1.64(H2O)0.36]∑2.00. Crimsonite is orthorhombic, Cccm, a = 16.2535(13), b = 7.4724(4), c = 12.1533(9) Å, V = 1476.04(17) Å3 and Z = 8. The eight strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dobs in Å(I)(hkl)]: 5.86(42)(111); 4.53(45)(112); 3.485(64)(113); 3.190(100) (022); 3.026(40)(004); 2.902(54)(511); 2.502(77)(422) and 2.268(54)(224). The structure of crimsonite (R1 = 3.57% for 740 Fo > 4σF) contains FeO6 octahedra that share edges to form dimers, which are then linked to other dimers by corner sharing to form chains along [010]. These chains are linked by PO4 tetrahedra yielding sheets parallel to {001}. The sheets are linked to one another via bonds to 8-coordinated Pb2+ atoms with non-stereoactive 6s2 lone-electron pairs.

We have determined the structures and thermal stability of AI(6-x) CuxZr2 (0≤ × ≤ 1) powders prepared by mechanically alloying elemental powder mixtures. In the as mechanically alloyed condition the structure is L12 for all ×. After heating to 750°C the alloy is single phase D023 for 0 < × < 0.2, is a two-phase mixture of D023 and L12 for 0.2 < × < 0.6, and remains in the Ll2 phase for 0.6 < × < 1. Al5CuZr2 is stable in the Ll2 structure up to 1300°C. The lattice parameter of the annealed L12 phase is Independent of ×.

Analytical expressions describing the various thermodynamic phases in binary systems can be derived by the CALPHAD approach, whereby the parameters in these expressions are obtained from fits to measured phase equilibrium data. Extrapolations of these models can be used to predict metastable equilibria. Different thermodynamic models proposed for the Ni–Ti and the Cu–Ti systems are used to calculate the T0 curves that are relevant to the prediction of the glass-forming range in rapidly cooled molten alloys. Although all the models give acceptable fits for the equilibrium range for which they were derived, significant differences are found for the metastable regime. The problems that need to be addressed in order to improve the extrapolations into the metastable regime are discussed. Simple thermodynamic considerations predict that the glass-forming range for rapidly quenched alloys exceeds that for amorphous alloys synthesized by isothermal solid-state interdiffusion reactions.
