Using the term “legacy” for a career as productive, insightful, and pathbreaking as Chris Bayly's is doubtless an understatement. The movement in his publications from the transitional world in the Indian subcontinent leading to British imperialism, through aspects of high empire in India, to world history through both case studies and broader context for grasping the implications of a changing world, provides valuable analyses for all of us, if not a pattern many could replicate. Perhaps what ought to be noted here is the experience, common to many of us working across a very broad range of problematics and focal points, to have found Bayly there, before us.
Background: Intracranial mycotic aneurysms are rare forms of vascular abnormalities. They are typically fragile and have high tendency to bleed. Even when they are successfully secured upon intervention, the medical management can be challenging in presence of other non-ruptured aneurysms and concomitant cerebral vasospasm. Methods: A 31 year old female was admitted with right sided large intracerebral hemorrhage due to ruptured mycotic MCA aneurysm. She was also known with severe tricuspid regurgitation from drug abuse. Others aneurysms were also located intracranially and extracranially, including subclavian and renal arteries. Results: The MCA aneurysm was successfully clipped during decompressive craniectomy. The non-ruptured left ACA aneurysm was occluded through endovascular intervention. Due to cardiac condition and presence of other non-secured extarcranial aneurysms, we followed the MNI protocol for treating cerebral vasospsam by milrinone infusion. The treatment was successful for over three weeks until another micro-aneurysm had ruptured which had lead to severe and rapid clinical deterioration, that had lead eventually to death. Conclusions: Intracranial mycotic aneurysms remain challenging. Patients should be selected for surgical clipping versus endovascular intervention based on clinical state and radiological features. We suggest using milrinone over induced hypertension therapy for post-intervention cerebral vasospasm in order to lower the risk for rupturing non-secured aneurysms.
Ochotonophila flava Dickoré & Freitag sp. nov. (Caryophyllaceae – Silenoideae) is described from the mountains of Bamiyan Province, central Afghanistan. It differs from the two previously known species endemic to Afghanistan, Ochotonophila allochrusoides Gilli and O. eglandulosa Hedge & Wendelbo, by its cream to yellow petals and elliptic leaves. A key to the identification of Ochotonophila species is provided; distribution and ecology are outlined.
For many years now, the combination of the modern S/TEM system (scanning/transmission electron microscope) with the X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (XEDS) has resulted in Analytical Electron Microscopes (AEMs) able to deliver both high-resolution imaging and elemental composition maps in the same instrument. This ability to correlate local elemental composition with microstructure has greatly broadened the applications realm of the S/TEM instrument. The boundaries of performance for many of these applications are now determined by limits in XEDS system detection sensitivity. In this article, we describe an AEM with greatly enhanced detection sensitivity due to a number of innovations in the system architecture, including: a high-brightness Schottky FEG source, four detectors integrated deeply into the objective lens, windowless silicon drift detector technology with shutters, and high-speed electronics readout. This new system architecture provides many performance benefits, such as improved light element detection, better sample tilt response, faster mapping, and especially enhanced system detection sensitivity.
Always have Indians identified themselves by their caste, by theirancestral village: “Our family were Khatris from the West Punjabcountryside.” “Murud, at one time a fairly prosperous village, is mynative place.” In the late nineteenth century, however, an important new process of forging group identities which transcended these local attributions came to characterize South Asian social history. This was in part prompted by the efforts of an alien British administration to identify the constituent units in Indian society. Drawing on European historical experience, the administrators applied the collective labels "Hindu" and "Muslim" to groups who were far from homogeneous communities.
Vanadium oxides are materials of interest due to their electronic, magnetic and catalytic properties. In the case of V2O3 and Cu3Au, the interfacial bonding is rather difficult to describe since the two component materials have strongly different electronic structures. Thus a local investigation of the interface becomes important. In this investigation, the incoherent interface between a V2O3 (0001, corundum structure) layer and a Cu3Au (001, L12 structure) substrate is characterized with the help of image corrected high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) and focal series reconstruction in order to investigated both the true position of atoms and the nature of the atomic species. Semi-quantitative results can be shown for the chemical composition of columns and strains at one side of the interface.
