The science of extra-solar planets is one of the most rapidly changing areas of astrophysics and since 1995 the number of planets known has increased by almost two orders of magnitude. A combination of ground-based surveys and dedicated space missions has resulted in 560-plus planets being detected, and over 1200 that await confirmation. NASA's Kepler mission has opened up the possibility of discovering Earth-like planets in the habitable zone around some of the 100,000 stars it is surveying during its 3 to 4-year lifetime. The new ESA's Gaia mission is expected to discover thousands of new planets around stars within 200 parsecs of the Sun. The key challenge now is moving on from discovery, important though that remains, to characterisation: what are these planets actually like, and why are they as they are?

In the past ten years, we have learned how to obtain the first spectra of exoplanets using transit transmission and emission spectroscopy. With the high stability of Spitzer, Hubble, and large ground-based telescopes the spectra of bright close-in massive planets can be obtained and species like water vapour, methane, carbon monoxide and dioxide have been detected. With transit science came the first tangible remote sensing of these planetary bodies and so one can start to extrapolate from what has been learnt from Solar System probes to what one might plan to learn about their faraway siblings. As we learn more about the atmospheres, surfaces and near-surfaces of these remote bodies, we will begin to build up a clearer picture of their construction, history and suitability for life.

The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory, EChO, will be the first dedicated mission to investigate the physics and chemistry of Exoplanetary Atmospheres. By characterising spectroscopically more bodies in different environments we will take detailed planetology out of the Solar System and into the Galaxy as a whole.

EChO has now been selected by the European Space Agency to be assessed as one of four M3 mission candidates.

Very few attempts have been made to apply a mathematical model to the learning curve in the California Verbal Learning Test list A immediate recall. Our rationale was to find out whether modeling of the learning curve can add additional information to the standard CVLT-II measures. We applied a standard transfer function in the form Y = B3*exp(-B2*(X-1))+B4*(1-exp(-B2*(X-1))), where X is the trial number; Y is the number of recalled correct words, B2 is the learning rate, B3 is readiness to learn and B4 is ability to learn. The coefficients of the model were found to be independent measures not duplicating standard CVLT-II measures. Regression analysis revealed that readiness to learn (B3) and ability to learn (B4) were significantly (p < .05) higher in a group of healthy participants than in a group of participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but the learning rate (B2) did not differ (p > .2). The proposed model is appropriate for clinical application and as a guide for research and may be used as a good supplemental tool for the CVLT-II and similar memory tests. The tropical flora remains chronically understudied and the lack of floristic understanding hampers ecological research and its application for large-scale conservation planning. Given scarce resources and the scale of the challenge there is a need to maximize the efficiency of both sampling strategies and sampling units, yet there is little information on the relative efficiency of different approaches to floristic assessment in tropical forests. This paper is the first attempt to address this gap. We repeatedly sampled forests in two regions of Amazonia using the two most widely used plot-based protocols of floristic sampling, and compared their performance in terms of the quantity of floristic knowledge and ecological insight gained scaled to the field effort required. Specifically, the methods are assessed first in terms of the number of person-days required to complete each sample (‘effort’), secondly by the total gain in the quantity of floristic information that each unit of effort provides (‘crude inventory efficiency’), and thirdly in terms of the floristic information gained as a proportion of the target species pool (‘proportional inventory efficiency’). Finally, we compare the methods in terms of their efficiency in identifying different ecological patterns within the data (‘ecological efficiency’) while controlling for effort. There are large and consistent differences in the performance of the two methods. The disparity is maintained even after accounting for regional and site-level variation in forest species richness, tree density and the number of field assistants. We interpret our results in the context of selecting the appropriate method for particular research purposes.

Surface and interface morphology may play an important role in the electrical performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices with small characteristic dimensions. In previous work we showed how steps on the silicon surface influence the Si-SiO2 interface morphology and the outer oxide surface morphology following thermal oxidation [1]. The Si-SiO2 interface morphology is largely determined by the starting silicon substrate step distribution and atomic steps at the Si surface cause an inherent variation in oxide thickness after thermal oxidation. In the present study we report how roughness caused by increased interfacial step density may affect the electronic tunneling characteristics of an MOS device structure. To determine the extent to which the step morphology plays a role in the tunneling behavior of such devices, similar arrays of capacitors were fabricated on both Si surfaces with reduced step density and surfaces which had not undergone any special surface step removal treatment. The leakage currents due to tunneling for the two types of capacitors were measured and compared. Atomic steps cause an effective decrease in oxide thickness in those capacitors without reduced step density and this leads to increased leakage current.

Atomic force microscopy has been used to study the morphology of the oxide surface and the Si-SiO2 interface after oxidation of Si(111) surfaces that are either totally free of atomic steps or have well characterized low step density. The step-free areas were formed by thermally processing a patterned Si surface in which flat areas are enclosed by a square array of ridges; flow of the atomic steps into the surrounding ridge barriers produces a regular array of step-free areas each of which can be up to ∼50µm×50µm. Arrays of widely spaced steps (e.g. 5µm) can also be produced in the step-free areas. AFM scans of the same areas were taken prior to (dry) oxidation, after oxidation, and after chemical removal of the oxide. It was found that at an oxide thickness in the 5-13nm range, the initial step structure of the underlying Si substrates is translated through the oxide to the surface after oxidation with the oxide surface being somewhat rougher than the initial substrate. Furthermore, the initial step morphology of the substrate remains at the Si-SiO2 interface after etching away the oxide by HF. The interface roughness is less than that of the oxide surface. The results suggest that the initial oxidation of silicon proceeds in a ‘layer by layer’ manner and not through a preferential step-flow oxide growth mode.

Mortuary practices rank among the best sources of archaeological data from which to infer social organization, ideology, religious beliefs, and to a certain extent, the political structure of past societies. This essay (1) reviews mortuary practices among prehistoric groups of Puerto Rico, (2) proposes a possible sequence of changes through time, and (3) presents explanations that account for the observed changes. Aside from evident correlation with broad cultural developments, changes in mortuary practices can be understood best in the context of parallel developments in social, political, and economic complexity. We argue that in Puerto Rico a shift in mortuary practices from burying dead relatives in centralized cemeteries to the disposition of the dead in domestic contexts was strongly related to a shift from largely kin-based societies to the ranked organization of cacicazgos (chiefdoms). Particularly, we conclude that the shift in social organization from emphasis on extended descent groups that acted as corporate groups to nuclear households reflects a strategy utilized by the emerging elite to dismantle and reorient previous communal institutions. This shift was accomplished through the monopolization, by the emerging elite, of the tenets surrounding the cult of the ancestors to create a legitimizing ideology.
