Objectives: In complex real life situations, memories for temporal and spatial information are naturally linked since sequential events coincide in time and space. Whether this connection is inseparable or instead whether these processes are functionally dissociable was investigated in this patient study. Methods: Spatial object-location and temporal order memory tasks were administered to 36 stroke patients and 44 healthy control participants. Results: On group level, patients with a stroke in the left hemisphere performed worse on temporal order memory, compared to the control participants. On individual level, using a multiple case-study approach, a clear pattern of dissociations was found between memory for temporal and for spatial features. Conclusions: These findings indicate that location and temporal order memory contain functionally separable processes. This adds to our understanding of how context information is processed in human memory. (JINS, 2017, 23, 421–430)

Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to remember to execute delayed intentions. Previous studies indicate that PM is impaired in persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, but the extent, nature, and cognitive correlates are unclear. A meta-analytic review was, therefore, performed (literature search 1990 to July 2011) on case-control studies on PM in dementia (10 studies, 336 patients, 505 controls) and MCI (7 studies, 225 patients, 253 controls). Differences between event-based and time-based PM and between measures of prospective and retrospective memory were examined, as well as correlations with other cognitive functions. Results showed that patients with dementia or MCI exhibit large deficits in PM (Hedges’ d −1.62 [95% confidence interval −1.98 to −1.27; p < .0001] for dementia; −1.24 [−1.51 to −0.995; p < .0001] for MCI; difference dementia vs. MCI: QM = 1.94, p = .16). Impairments were comparable in size for event-based and time-based PM (p > .05), as well as for prospective and retrospective memory (p > .05). PM showed modest correlations with measures of retrospective memory (median r = 0.27) and executive functioning (median r = 0.30). PM appears a valid construct in neuropsychological assessment in patients with dementia or MCI, but more insight is needed in the optimal characteristics of PM tasks to be used in clinical practice. Selective biomolecular functionalization of our all-(111) surface silicon nanowire (SiNW) biosensors using covalently linked alkyl- monolayers is demonstrated. Monolayers were made using a commercially available six member carbon precursor N-(5-Hexynyl) phthalimide and UV based hydrosylilation reaction. Contact angle and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were used to characterize the monolayer at different stages on planar Si (111) samples. Terminal amine groups on the monolayer surface were used for further conjugation with (+)-Biotin N-hydroxysuccinimide ester after deprotection of the phthalimide group with a methylamine solution. Selective biofunctionalization was demonstrated by reacting the SiNW-monolayer-biotin surface with 5 nm gold nanoparticles conjugated with streptavidin and subsequent high resolution scanning electron microscopy imaging.

Since its publication in 1955, Almarin Phillips' article “The Tableau Économique as a Simple Leontief Model” has inspired an interesting line of interpretation of the arithmetical schemes presented two centuries earlier by François Quesnay. Subsequent attempts to represent the Tableaux économiques in the form of Input-Output transcriptions by Shlomo Maital (1972), Bernhard Korte (1972), Tibor Barna (1975), and Paul Samuelson (1986), among others, have underlined the brilliance of the French doctor's formal conception of the economy as a reproductive system.

Mesoporous templated MCM-48 silica was prepared using a C16 surfactant as template. The MCM-48 powders and thin films were characterized by different techniques. Two types of porous supports were used, namely macroporous á-alumina and silicon microsieves. The supported MCM-48 layers were applied as liquid permeable membranes in pressure-driven nanofiltration and electric field-mediated ion transport experiments.

The transport of ions from aqueous solutions through a stacked Au/α-Al2O3/γ-Al2O3/Au membrane under the influence of a dc potential difference is reported. The membrane shows high cation permselectivity at ionic strengths of ∼10-3 M at pH 4.3–6.5, which is associated with a combination of anion adsorption and double-layer overlap inside the pores of the γ-alumina layer. The cation flux can be controlled by ionic strength, dc potential difference and pH.

Traditionally, most arbitration acts provided that an arbitrator could be challenged on the same grounds as those on which judges could be challenged. Thus, arbitrators could be challenged on specific grounds, such as a family relationship with one of the parties or animosity towards one of the parties. The more modern approach is to provide for an open norm for the grounds on which challenges can be brought. This approach finds its origin in the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules adopted in 1976. It provides that: “[a]n arbitrator may be challenged only if circumstances exist that give rise to the justifiable doubts as to his impartiality or independence”. This standard was received in many other arbitration acts and rules. The standard nowadays being more or less uniform, its interpretation and application are far from easy.
