This lecture was given by Per Martin-Löf at Leiden University on August 25, 2001 at the invitation by Göran Sundholm to address the topic mentioned in the title and to reflect on Dummett’s earlier effort of almost a decade before (published in this journal). The lecture was part of a three-day conference on Gottlob Frege. Sundholm arranged for the lecture to be recorded and commissioned Bjørn Jespersen to make a transcript. Let Sn,n≥1, be the successive sums of the payoffs in the classical St. Petersburg game. The celebrated Feller weak law states that Sn∕(nlog2n)→ℙ1 as n→∞. In this paper we review some earlier results of ours and extend some of them as we consider an asymmetric St. Petersburg game, in which the distribution of the payoff X is given by ℙ(X=srk-1)=pqk-1,k=1,2,…, where p+q=1 and s,r>0. Two main results are extensions of the Feller weak law and the convergence in distribution theorem of Martin-Löf (1985). Moreover, it is well known that almost-sure convergence fails, though Csörgő and Simons (1996) showed that almost-sure convergence holds for trimmed sums and also for sums trimmed by an arbitrary fixed number of maxima. In view of the discreteness of the distribution we focus on `max-trimmed sums', that is, on the sums trimmed by the random number of observations that are equal to the largest one, and prove limit theorems for simply trimmed sums, for max-trimmed sums, as well as for the `total maximum'. Analogues with respect to the random number of summands equal to the minimum are also obtained and, finally, for joint trimming.

Consider a random graph, having a prespecified degree distribution F, but other than that being uniformly distributed, describing the social structure (friendship) in a large community. Suppose that one individual in the community is externally infected by an infectious disease and that the disease has its course by assuming that infected individuals infect their not yet infected friends independently with probability p. For this situation, we determine the values of R0, the basic reproduction number, and τ0, the asymptotic final size in the case of a major outbreak. Furthermore, we examine some different local vaccination strategies, where individuals are chosen randomly and vaccinated, or friends of the selected individuals are vaccinated, prior to the introduction of the disease. For the studied vaccination strategies, we determine Rv, the reproduction number, and τv, the asymptotic final proportion infected in the case of a major outbreak, after vaccinating a fraction v.

We study the genealogy of so-called immortal branching processes, i.e. branching processes where each individual upon death is replaced by at least one new individual, and conclude that their marginal distributions are compound geometric. The result also implies that the limiting distributions of properly scaled supercritical branching processes are compound geometric. We exemplify our results with an expression for the marginal distribution for a class of branching processes that have recently appeared in the theory of coalescent processes and continuous stable random trees. The limiting distribution can be expressed in terms of the Fox H-function, and in special cases by the Meijer G-function.

The distribution of the final size, K, in a general SIR epidemic model is considered in a situation when the critical parameter λ is close to 1. It is shown that with a ‘critical scaling’ λ ≈ 1 + a / n1/3, m ≈ bn1/3, where n is the initial number of susceptibles and m is the initial number of infected, then K / n2/3 has a limit distribution when n → ∞. It can be described as that of T, the first passage time of a Wiener process to a parabolic barrier b + at − t2/2. The proof is based on a diffusion approximation. Moreover, it is shown that the distribution of T can be expressed analytically in terms of Airy functions using the spectral representation connected with Airy's differential equation.

Iterative sampling procedures of a general type in a finite population are considered. They generalize the Reed-Frost process in that binomial sampling is replaced by an arbitrary symmetric sampling defined by a factorial series distribution. Threshold limit theorems are proved saying that the total number of sampled objects is either small with a certain limit distribution, or a finite fraction of the population with a Gaussian limit distribution as the size of the population gets large. These results extend earlier ones for the Reed-Frost process [1], and are proved in a more direct way than before.

The total gain, SN, in N successive Petersburg games is considered, and a limit theorem for SN/N – n when N = 2n and n → ∞is proved. The limit distribution can be determined numerically with good accuracy, and this fact provides a simple rule of thumb for determining a premium for the game, which is safe from the point of view of the casino.

The Reed–Frost model for the spread of an infection is considered and limit theorems for the total size, T, of the epidemic are proved in the limit when n, the initial number of healthy persons, is large and the probability of an encounter between a healthy and an infected person per time unit, p, is λ/n. It is shown that there is a critical threshold λ = 1 in the following sense, when the initial number of infected persons, m, is finite: If λ ≦ 1, T remains finite and has a limit distribution which can be described. If λ > 1 this is still true with a probability σm < 1, and with probability 1 – σmT is close to n(1 – σ) and has an approximately Gaussian distribution around this value. When m → ∞ also, only the Gaussian part of the limit distribution is obtained. A randomized version of the Reed–Frost model is also considered, and this allows the same result to be proved for the Kermack–McKendrick model. It is also shown that the limit theorem can be used to study the number of connected components in a random graph, which can be considered as a crude description of a polymerization process. In this case polymerization takes place when λ > 1 and not when λ ≦ 1.
