The load imbalance and communication overhead of parallel computing are crucial bottlenecks for galaxy simulations. A successful way to improve the scalability of astronomical simulations is a Hamiltonian splitting method, which needs to identify such regions integrated with smaller timesteps than the global timestep for integrating the entire galaxy. In the case of galaxy simulations, the regions inside supernova (SN) shells require the smallest steps. We developed the deep learning model to forecast the region affected by the SN shell’s expansion during one global step. In addition, we identified the particles with small timesteps using image processing. We can identify target particles using our method with a higher identification rate (88 % to 98 % on average) and lower “non-target”-to-“target” fraction (6.4 to 5.5 on average) compared to the analytic approach with the Sedov-Taylor solution. Our method using Hamiltonian splitting and deep learning will improve the performance of extremely high-resolution galaxy simulations.

Single photon sources (SPS) are an important building block for realizing quantum technologies for computing, communication, and sensing. For industrialization, electrically controllable color centers acting as SPS are required. We have demonstrated the creation of electrically controllable silicon vacancies (VSis) in the SiC pn junction diode fabricated by proton beam writing (PBW). PBW was successfully used to introduce electrically controllable VSi without degradation of the diode performance. The dependence of the electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) intensities from VSi on H+ fluence revealed that the emission efficiency of EL is less than that of PL. For EL, the supply of carriers (electrons and/or holes) was restricted due to the resistive region around each VSi introduced by PBW. The results suggest that further improvement in the VSi creation process without defects acting as majority carrier removal centers (highly resistive region) and nonradiative centers by optimization of PBW conditions are key points to realize highly sensitive quantum sensors using VSi.

The structure refinement of a hastingsite (Cl 0.91 p.f .u.) from West Ongul Island, Ltitzow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica, has been carried out in order to characterise the effect of CI on the crystal structure. The composition of the Cl-rich hastingsite is K0.69Na0.26Ca1.99Mg1.09Fe2+2.71Fe3+0.92Mn0.04Ti0.10−Al2.31Si5.83O22OH0.99Cl0.91F0.10 with unit cell parameters a 9.962(3), b 18.283(7), c 5.572(1) Å and β 104.87(3)°.

In the Cl-rich hastingsite, A1, Fe3+ and Ti occupy only the M(2) site, and Fe2+ strongly prefers the M(1) and M(3) sites to the M(2) site with respect to Mg. The Mg-Fe2+ distribution suggests that the Mg-CI avoidance is realised in the intracrystalline exchange reaction among the octahedral sites in the Cl-rich hastingsite. The individual position of CI and OH was refined and the effective ionic radius of Cl in fourfold coordination is determined as 1.79 Å. Substitution of Cl for OH expands the sizes of the M(1) and M(3) sites and extends the double chains in comparison with hydroxy calcic amphiboles. Cl especially, is close to the 0(6) and 0(7) oxygens beyond the minimum distance calculated from effective ionic radii. Therefore, the Cl-rich hastingsite is considered to be deformed locally by Cl.

Amphibole in the Larvik alkaline plutonic complex in the Oslo rift, Norway, has Ti-rich compositions from edenite through pargasite to kaersutite, and has a large H+ deficiency (0.7–1.1 atoms per formula unit: a.p.f.u.) with a large oxy component in the amphibole OH– site (O2– = 2 – (OH + F + Cl) = 0.2–0.9 a.p.f.u.), similar to the mantle-derived kaersutites. Their compositions reveal a characteristically low Fe3+/(Fe3++Fe2+) ratio (<0.23) and a high F concentration (0.3–0.9 a.p.f.u.). Correlation with the Fe3+ ratio caused by Fe2+ + OH– = Fe3+ + O2– + 1/2H2 substitution is negligible, which is supported by H and O isotope compositions. A possible substitution, [6]Al3+ + OH– = [6]Ti4+ + O2– may be operative for Larvik kaersutites when the O2–/Ti is 1.0. A relatively larger O2–/Ti ratio (1.2—2.0) suggests an another kaersutite substitution mechanism, [6]R2+ + 2OH– = [6]Ti4+ + 2O2–, where [6]R2+ = Fe2+ + Mg + Mn. These effects might result in the limited O2–/Ti ratio value from 1.0 to 2.0.

A negative correlation between Ti and F, suggesting F incorporation into kaersutite may diminish the O2–/Ti ratio, not only due to the occupation of this non-oxy species in the O3 site, but also due to F—Ti avoidance. Composition-dependent H and O isotope variations (δD = –106 to –71% and δ18O = 4.6–5.2%) suggest equilibrium in the closed-system magma with differentiation. The mineral chemistry of Larvik oxy-kaersutitic amphibole could reflect the crystallization in a closed-system magma during rifting with passive crustal thinning at the Oslo palaeorift.

Alkali feldspar (Or64.5Ab34.8An0.6) in a granite pegmatite from Hanazono, Kosei Town, Shiga Prefecture, southwest Japan, consists of two types of regions observable with the naked eye: one is colourless and transparent, and the other is pale pink and opaque. The colourless regions are clear, cryptoperthitic and almost free of micropores, and the pale pink regions are turbid, vein microperthitic and with many micropores visible under a microscope. The latter regions may have been changed from the former by the catalytic action of water. Integrated absorbance values were calculated for both types of regions from Fourier-transform infrared microspectra in the range 2500–4000 cm−1. These values were used as semi-quantitative parameters of water contents. The turbid regions are much more enriched in water compared to the clear regions. The chemical states of water in both regions were also evaluated. Water in the turbid regions is estimated to be present mainly as H2O inclusions in micropores and to be present to a lesser extent as structural OH groups. A small amount of water in the clear regions may be present as structural OH groups. The water distribution in the feldspar records the cooling history of hydrothermal reactions causing the coarsening of cryptoperthites to microperthites.

Cervical myelopathy consequent on ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is very rare in Caucasians. A 65-year-old Anglo-Saxon woman developed progressive gait disturbance, paresthesia in both legs and urinary urge incontinence. Radiological examination showed OPLL from fifth to seventh cervical vertebral level; the dense OPLL was graphically displayed by three-dimensional computerized tomography. Medial corpectomy, C5 to C7, and removal of OPLL, with subsequent fusion C4 to Tl using a free fibula graft resulted in clinical improvement. Three dimensional computerized tomographic imaging is a valuable diagnostic procedure in OPLL.

The lateral migration properties of a rigid spherical particle suspended in a pressure-driven flow through channels with square cross-sections were investigated numerically, in the range of Reynolds numbers ($Re$) from 20 to 1000. The flow field around the particle was computed by the immersed boundary method to calculate the lateral forces exerted on the particle and its trajectories, starting from various initial positions. The numerical simulation showed that eight equilibrium positions of the particle are present at the centres of the channel faces and near the corners of the channel cross-section. The equilibrium positions at the centres of the channel faces are always stable, whereas the equilibrium positions at the corners are unstable until $Re$ exceeds a certain critical value, $Re_{c}$. At $Re\approx Re_{c}$, additional equilibrium positions appear on a heteroclinic orbit that joins the channel face and corner equilibrium positions, and the lateral forces along the heteroclinic orbit are very small. As $Re$ increases, the channel face equilibrium positions are shifted towards the channel wall at first, and then shifted away from the channel wall. The channel corner equilibrium positions exhibit a monotonic shift towards the channel corner with increasing $Re$. Migration behaviours of the particle in the cross-section are also predicted for various values of $Re$. These numerical results account for the experimental observations of particle distributions in the cross-section of micro and millimetre scale channels, including the characteristic alignment and focusing of the particles, the absence of the corner equilibrium positions at low $Re$ and the progressive shift of the equilibrium positions with $Re$.

In this paper, we discuss the characteristics of the InGaP/GaAs heterojunction phototransistors (HPTs) before and after the electrical stress at room temperature and assess the effectiveness of the emitter-ledge passivation. Although an electrical stress given to the phototransistors by keeping a collector current density of 37 A/cm2 for 1 hour at room temperature was too small to affect the room-temperature common-emitter current gain and photocurrent of both HPTs with and without the emitter-ledge passivation, they showed a significant decrease at 420 K due to the room-temperature electrical stress. Nevertheless, the room-temperature common-emitter current gain and photocurrent of the HPT with the emitter-ledge passivation were still higher than those of the HPT without the emitter-ledge passivation. The effectiveness of the emitter-ledge passivation against the electrical stress was more significant than that on the current gain in the dark. In addition to the electrical stress experiment, for a potential application of the InGaP/GaAs HPTs in space, we will irradiate the HPTs with 1-MeV electrons at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Both current gain and photocurrent decreased significantly after the electron irradiation. In contrast to the electrical stress, the damage due to the high-energy electron irradiation is a bulk-related phenomenon, and the emitter-ledge passivation does not seem to suppress the degradation.

(Cu0.47Zr0.45Al0.08)100–xDyx (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4; at.%) metallic glasses with greatly enhanced glass-forming ability (GFA) and plasticity were synthesized based on microalloying technique. The structure, thermal stability, and elastic properties of the BMG samples were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and ultrasonic measurements, respectively. With addition of minor dysprosium (Dy), fully metallic glassy rods with diameters exceeding 20 mm could be successfully fabricated by copper mold casting. In addition, the Cu–Zr–Al–Dy BMGs exhibit good mechanical properties under a compressive deformation mode, i.e., high yield strength of 1735–1906 MPa, Young's modulus of 85–100 GPa, and distinct plastic strain up to 4.02%. The strength and plasticity show remarkable correlations with glass transition temperature and Poisson's ratio, respectively. The role of minor Dy addition in enhancement in GFA and mechanical property of the Cu-rich BMGs is also discussed.

Surface-induced aromatic stabilization (SIAS), a recently proposed mechanism leading to a formation of charge-transfer (CT) states at organic/metal (O/M) interfaces [G. Heimel, et al., Nat. Chem.5, 187 (2013)], was investigated for an aromatic hydrocarbon, diindenoperylene (DIP), by means of synchrotron radiation-based ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). By employing DIP and noble metal substrates (Ag and Cu), we confirmed the formation of CT states, indicating that an inclusion of a specific functional group with a hetero-atom within adsorbate molecules as suggested before is not necessarily required for the formation of CT states mediated by the SIAS. With a comparison of the mother and analogue molecules, perylene and PTCDA, we discuss the structural requirement for the realization of the SIAS.

Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is an important fish from the Amazon Basin that has great potential for fish farming, human consumption, sport fishing and fish keeping. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two hormonal treatments on the induction of artificial reproduction in broodstock and to describe the histological development of embryos and larvae. Broodstocks were selected and induced using two different hormones: (i) extract of carp pituitary (ECP); and (ii) synthetic human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Spawnings were transferred to hatcheries, collected at pre-established times, processed and analysed by histology. Astronotus ocellatus did not respond well to induced reproduction. From 16 couples of breeding fish, only five out of the eight females released oocytes after the hormonal action time, three with hCG and two with ECP; just one male responded positively to hCG. Oscar eggs were oval, and semi-adhesive, the yolk contained granules, and egg diameter was approximately 1.65 ± 0.057 to 1.98 ± 0.038 mm. Development from the initial collection (IC) point until the total absorption of the yolk lasted 315 h, at an average temperature of 27.45 ± 2.13°C. Several events marked embryonic and larval development, including the formation of the optic cup, forebrain, otic vesicle and cephalic divisions. The newly hatched larvae had non-pigmented eyes, and a closed mouth and anus, as well as the presence of adhesive glands on the head. Larval development was characterized by formation of the heart, liver, gaseous bladder, gills, pronephros, brain, fins and also the digestive tract. These results provide important information for the rearing and reproduction of A. ocellatus.

Structure-related ionization energy (IE) of vacuum-deposited titanyl-phthalocyanine (OTiPc) thin films was investigated by using in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray diffractometry. Distinct molecular orientations (i.e. lying-flat and standing-up orientation) in different polymorphous (i.e. monoclinic β-phase and triclinic α-phase) were observed on a surface of polycrystalline (poly-) Au and octadecyltrichlorosilane-self assembled monolayer (OTS-SAM). For the two structures IE of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of OTiPc thin films altered significantly by 0.55 eV. The different IE was attributed to surface dipole potential and strong intermolecular interaction.

Highly transparent conductive Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) films are one of the promising transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films for use in electrodes of flat display panels and window layers of thin film solar cells. For the ZnO-based TCO films, the stability to damp-heat environment is a crucial issue for practical applications. We will report moisture resistant GZO codoped with indium films (GZO:In) on the basis of analysis of data obtained a damp-heat test for solar cells (85°C and 85% relative humidity for 1000 hours).

We used ZnO sintered targets with contents of 3 wt% Ga2O3 and 0.25 wt% In2O3 to grow GZO:In films in ion plating with direct current arc-discharge system. GZO:In films with different thicknesses (0.1-1 μm) were deposited on glass substrates at 200°C under the O2 flow rate of 15 sccm. As the film thickness increased from 0.1 to 1 μm, the resistivity and sheet resistance decreased from 4.3 μΩm to 2.6 μΩm and from 42.7 Ω/Sq. to 2.6 Ω/Sq., respectively. And the average optical transmittance (Tav) in the range from 0.4 to 1 μm decreased from ∼ 86% to ∼ 75%. The GZO:In film with a thickness of ∼300 nm had a low sheet resistance of 10.5 Ω/Sq. and a Tav of 82.5%. After 1000 hours damp-heat (DH) test under 85°C and 85% relative humidity, the relative change of sheet resistance is 3.4% with a Hall mobility of 26.4 cm2/V.s and a Tav of 82.7% after test. The film thicker than 300 nm has a sheet resistance lower than 10 Ω/Sq. and a relative change of resistance of ∼3% after DH test.
