A restricted nonlinear (RNL) model, obtained by partitioning the state variables into streamwise-averaged quantities and superimposed perturbations, is used in order to track the exact coherent state in plane channel flow investigated by Toh & Itano (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 481, 2003, pp. 67–76). When restricting nonlinearities to quadratic interaction of the fluctuating part into the streamwise-averaged component, it is shown that the coherent structure and its dynamics closely match results from direct numerical simulation (DNS), even if only a single streamwise Fourier mode is retained. In particular, both solutions exhibit long quiescent phases, spanwise shifts and bursting events. It is also shown that the dynamical trajectory passes close to equilibria that exhibit either low- or high-drag states. When statistics are collected at times where the friction velocity peaks, the mean flow and root-mean-square profiles show the essential features of wall turbulence obtained by DNS for the same friction Reynolds number. For low-drag events, the mean flow profiles are related to a universal asymptotic state called maximum drag reduction (Xi & Graham, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 108, 2012, 028301). Hence, the intermittent nature of self-sustaining processes in the buffer layer is contained in the dynamics of the RNL model, organized in two exact coherent states plus an asymptotic turbulent-like attractor. We also address how closely turbulent dynamics approaches these equilibria by exploiting a DNS database associated with a larger domain.

Oscillatory Stokes flows, with zero mean, are subjected to subcritical transition to turbulence. The maximal energy growth of perturbations is computed in the subcritical regime through an optimisation method. The results show strong amplifications during half a period. The energy transfer from the base flow involves an Orr mechanism with two-dimensional vorticity waves, and the maximum energy scales exponentially with the Reynolds number. Nonlinear simulations show that low-energy perturbations are sufficient to trigger turbulent flow.

This work describes a systematic methodology for the synthesis of tendon-driven manipulators. A method for enumerating the topology of tendon routings is first established. To conform with the enumerated structures, the kinematic synthesis of the manipulator using singular value decomposition is then developed. Design equations for synthesizing a general tendon-driven manipulator with isotropic transmission characteristics are subsequently derived. It is shown that the design methodology may give designers wider selection in determining the tendon routing topology than prior methods by other literature.

The transition of the flow in a duct of square cross-section is studied. Like in the similar case of the pipe flow, the motion is linearly stable for all Reynolds numbers; this flow is thus a good candidate to investigate the ‘bypass’ path to turbulence. Initially the so-called ‘linear optimal perturbation problem’ is formulated and solved, yielding optimal disturbances in the form of longitudinal vortices. Such optimals, however, fail to elicit a significant response from the system in the nonlinear regime. Thus, streamwise-inhomogeneous sub-optimal disturbances are focused upon; nonlinear quadratic interactions are immediately caused by such initial perturbations and an unstable streamwise-homogeneous large-amplitude mode rapidly emerges. The subsequent evolution of the flow, at a value of the Reynolds number at the boundary between fully developed turbulence and relaminarization, shows the alternance of patterns with two pairs of large-scale vortices near opposing parallel walls. Such edge states bear a resemblance to optimal disturbances.

Comme pour nombre de métiers la formation débute par un apprentissage avec un formateur ou compagnon pour connaître les gestes, les postures, les actions qui concourent à des prestations de qualité dans des conditions optimales de sécurité. Pour la manipulation d'appareils de radiographie industrielle (rayons X ou gamma) une connaissance spécifique supplémentaire doit être acquise dans le domaine des risques liés à l'utilisation des rayonnements ionisants. Afin de limiter ces risques pour les opérateurs et pour le public en général toute une batterie de textes réglementaires a été établie en droit français. Ces textes concernent la détention de sources de rayonnements ionisants, le transport de ces sources, le contrôle des appareils, la formation et le suivi dosimétrique des travailleurs (voir les travaux de l'atelier 1). Tous ces textes ont permis en France de comptabiliser peu ou pas d'incidents graves durant les deux dernières décennies, si l'on excepte le cas particulier de Forbach en 1991 dont l'accélérateur d'électrons était utilisé pour des irradiations mais qui aurait pu être utilisé en radiographie. Toutefois des incidents mineurs ont toujours lieu et la moyenne des doses individuelles des opérateurs de radiographie, notamment en gammagraphie, reste une des plus élevées de l'ensemble des travailleurs en France. La meilleure façon de limiter encore l'exposition de ces travailleurs est d'améliorer la formation tant sur le plan de la radioprotection en général que sur celui des bonnes pratiques professionnelles, les deux étant d'ailleurs intimement liés. Le but de cet atelier a été de faire le point sur les aspects réglementaires de la formation en radioprotection et voir comment la faire évoluer pour limiter les expositions des intervenants en radiologie industrielle. La première partie de ce document expose les réflexions de l'atelier à partir de la fin de l'année 2006 et la deuxième partie présente les deniers textes réglementaires du 21 décembre 2007 et détaille les principales dispositions prises par rapport aux propositions de l'atelier.
