In 1913 Frobenius conjectured that for any positive integer m, there exists at most one pair of integers (x, y) with 0 ≤ x ≤ y ≤ m such that (x, y, m) is a solution to the Markoff equation: x2 + y2 + m2 = 3xym. We show this is true if either m, 3m — 2 or 3m + 2 is prime, twice a prime or four times a prime.

In this paper a refinement of property Z of Zahorski-Weil is defined and shown to be, like the weaker property Z, satisfied by all common derivatives.

We show that every element in the Brauer-Wall group of a field with characteristic different from 2 is represented uniquely by a division graded algebra, (i.e. homogeneous elements are invertible) but, of course, not necessarily by a graded (division algebra). This is a fairly direct consequence of Wall's structure theory for central simple Z/2-graded algebras.

If R1 and R2 are root systems and there is a linear map which maps R1 ∪{0} onto R2∪{0} we write R1 —> R2. We determine all pairs (R1, R2) of irreducible root systems such that R1 —> R2.

A study is made of sums of reciprocal norms of integral and prime ideal divisors of algebraic integer values of a generalised exponential polynomial. This includes the important special cases of linear recurrence sequences and general sums of S-units. In the case of an integral binary recurrence sequence, similar (but stronger) results were obtained by P. Erdős, P. Kiss and C. Pomerance.

Complex numbers can be represented in positional notation using certain Gaussian integers as bases and digit sets. We describe a long division algorithm to divide one Gaussian integer by another, so that the quotient is a periodic expansion in such a complex base. To divide by the Gaussian integer w in the complex base b, using a digit set D, the remainder must be in the set wT(b,D) ∩ ℤ[i], where T(b,D) is the set of complex numbers with zero integer part in the base. The set T(b,D) tiles the plane, and can be described geometrically as the attractor of an iterated function system of linear maps. It usually has a fractal boundary. The remainder set can be determined algebraically from the cycles in a certain directed graph.

Let R be a left and right perfect right self-injective ring. It is shown that if the radical of R is countably generated as a left ideal then R is quasi-Frobenius. It is also shown that the same conclusion can be drawn if r(A ∩ B) = r(A) + r(B) for all left ideals A and B of R.

The generalized binomial function can be obtained as the solution of the equation y = 1 +zyα which satisfies y(0) = 1 where α ≠ 1 is assumed to be real and positive. The technique of Lagrange inversion can be used to express as a series which converges for |z| < α-α|a — l|α-1. We obtain a representation of the function as a contour integral and show that if α > 1 it is an analytic function in the complex z plane cut along the nonnegative real axis. For 0 < α < 1 the region of analyticity is the sector |arg(—z)| < απ. In either case defined by the series can be continued beyond the circle of convergenece of the series through a functional equation which can be derived from the integral representation.

The mutual injective hull of an arbitrary family of modules is constructed. Applications to the calculations of quasi-injective and π-injective hulls of direct sums are given.

Let denote the convex set of all positive linear maps from the matrix algebra Mn(ℂ) into itself. We construct a join homomorphism from the complete lattice of all faces of into the complete lattice of all join homomorphisms between the lattice of all subspaces of ℂn . We also characterize all maximal faces of .

A norm on ℝn is said to be permutation invariant if its value is preserved under permutation of the coordinates of a vector. The isometry group of such a norm must be closed, contain Sn and —I, and be conjugate to a subgroup of On, the orthogonal group. Motivated by this, we are interested in classifying all closed groups G such that 〈—I,Sn〉 < G < On. We use the theory of Lie groups to classify all possible infinite groups G, and use the theory of finite reflection groups to classify all possible finite groups G. In keeping with the original motivation, all groups arising are shown to be isometry groups. This completes the work of Gordon and Lewis, who studied the same problem and obtained the results for n ≥ 13.

It is shown that a suitable conformai change of the metric in the leaf direction of a transversally oriented Riemannian foliation on a closed manifold will make the basic component of the mean curvature harmonic. As a corollary, we deduce vanishing and finiteness theorems for Riemannian foliations without assuming the harmonicity of the basic mean curvature.

We provide a criterion for the class group of a complex quadratic field to have exponent at most 2. This is given in terms of the factorization of a generalized Euler-Rabinowitsch polynomial and has consequences for consecutive distinct initial prime-producing quadratic polynomials which we cite as applications.

If R is a Dedekind domain, then div splits i.e.; the maximal divisible submodule of every R-module M is a direct summand of M. We investigate the status of this result for some finite-dimensional hereditary algebras. We use a torsion theory which permits the existence of torsion-free divisible modules for such algebras. Using this torsion theory we prove that the algebras obtained from extended Coxeter- Dynkin diagrams are the only such hereditary algebras for which div splits. The field of rational functions plays an essential role. The paper concludes with a new type of infinite-dimensional indecomposable module over a finite-dimensional wild hereditary algebra.

A sieve lemma is found, applicable to certain families of analytic functions on the unit disk, analogous to a large sieve lemma of P. X. Gallagher for sets of integers.

Weighted LP mean convergence of Hermite-Fejér interpolation based on the zeros of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight |x|2α+1(l — x2)β(α, β > — 1) is investigated. A necessary and sufficient condition for such convergence for all continuous functions is given. Meanwhile divergence of Hermite-Fejér interpolation in LP with p > 2 is obtained. This gives a possible answer to Problem 17 of P. Turân [J. Approx. Theory, 29(1980), p. 40].
