We generalize our previous method on the subconvexity problem for $\text{GL}_{2}\times \text{GL}_{1}$ with cuspidal representations to Eisenstein series, and deduce a Burgess-like subconvex bound for Hecke characters, that is, the bound $|L(1/2,\unicode[STIX]{x1D712})|\ll _{\mathbf{F},\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}\mathbf{C}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D712})^{1/4-(1-2\unicode[STIX]{x1D703})/16+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}$ for varying Hecke characters $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ over a number field $\mathbf{F}$ with analytic conductor $\mathbf{C}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D712})$. As a main tool, we apply the extended theory of regularized integrals due to Zagier developed in a previous paper to obtain the relevant triple product formulas of Eisenstein series.

By an influential theorem of Boman, a function $f$ on an open set $U$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ is smooth (${\mathcal{C}}^{\infty }$) if and only if it is arc-smooth, that is, $f\,\circ \,c$ is smooth for every smooth curve $c:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow U$. In this paper we investigate the validity of this result on closed sets. Our main focus is on sets which are the closure of their interior, so-called fat sets. We obtain an analogue of Boman’s theorem on fat closed sets with Hölder boundary and on fat closed subanalytic sets with the property that every boundary point has a basis of neighborhoods each of which intersects the interior in a connected set. If $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d}$ is any such set and $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is arc-smooth, then $f$ extends to a smooth function defined on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. We also get a version of the Bochnak–Siciak theorem on all closed fat subanalytic sets and all closed sets with Hölder boundary: if $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is the restriction of a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ which is real analytic along all real analytic curves in $X$, then $f$ extends to a holomorphic function on a neighborhood of $X$ in $\mathbb{C}^{d}$. Similar results hold for non-quasianalytic Denjoy–Carleman classes (of Roumieu type). We will also discuss sharpness and applications of these results.

Let $p$ and $\ell$ be distinct primes, and let $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$ be an orthogonal or symplectic representation of the absolute Galois group of an $\ell$-adic field over a finite field of characteristic $p$. We define and study a liftable deformation condition of lifts of $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$ ‘ramified no worse than $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$’, generalizing the minimally ramified deformation condition for $\operatorname{GL}_{n}$ studied in Clozel et al. [Automorphy for some$l$-adic lifts of automorphic mod$l$Galois representations, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 108 (2008), 1–181; MR 2470687 (2010j:11082)]. The key insight is to restrict to deformations where an associated unipotent element does not change type when deforming. This requires an understanding of nilpotent orbits and centralizers of nilpotent elements in the relative situation, not just over fields.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective Fano variety over the complex numbers. We study the moduli space of rational curves on $X$ using the perspective of Manin’s conjecture. In particular, we bound the dimension and number of components of spaces of rational curves on $X$. We propose a geometric Manin’s conjecture predicting the growth rate of a counting function associated to the irreducible components of these moduli spaces.

We prove two results about the width of words in $\operatorname{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$. The first is that, for every $n\geqslant 3$, there is a constant $C(n)$ such that the width of any word in $\operatorname{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ is less than $C(n)$. The second result is that, for any word $w$, if $n$ is big enough, the width of $w$ in $\operatorname{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ is at most 87.

By use of a natural extension map and a power series method, we obtain a local stability theorem for $p$-Kähler structures with the $(p,p+1)$th mild $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x2202}}$-lemma under small differentiable deformations.

We prove duality isomorphisms of certain representations of ${\mathcal{W}}$-algebras which play an essential role in the quantum geometric Langlands program and some related results.

In this paper we establish some constraints on the eigenvalues for the action of a self map of a proper variety on its $\ell$-adic cohomology. The essential ingredients are a trace formula due to Fujiwara, and the theory of weights.

We show how the modular representation theory of inner forms of general linear groups over a non-Archimedean local field can be brought to bear on the complex theory in a remarkable way. Let $\text{F}$ be a non-Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic $p$, and let $\text{G}$ be an inner form of the general linear group $\text{GL}_{n}(\text{F})$ for $n\geqslant 1$. We consider the problem of describing explicitly the local Jacquet–Langlands correspondence $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}\mapsto _{\text{JL}}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ between the complex discrete series representations of $\text{G}$ and $\text{GL}_{n}(\text{F})$, in terms of type theory. We show that the congruence properties of the local Jacquet–Langlands correspondence exhibited by A. Mínguez and the first author give information about the explicit description of this correspondence. We prove that the problem of the invariance of the endo-class by the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence can be reduced to the case where the representations $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ and $_{\text{JL}}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ are both cuspidal with torsion number $1$. We also give an explicit description of the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence for all essentially tame discrete series representations of $\text{G}$, up to an unramified twist, in terms of admissible pairs, generalizing previous results by Bushnell and Henniart. In positive depth, our results are the first beyond the case where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ and $_{\text{JL}}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ are both cuspidal.

For a proper, smooth scheme $X$ over a $p$-adic field $K$, we show that any proper, flat, semistable ${\mathcal{O}}_{K}$-model ${\mathcal{X}}$ of $X$ whose logarithmic de Rham cohomology is torsion free determines the same ${\mathcal{O}}_{K}$-lattice inside $H_{\text{dR}}^{i}(X/K)$ and, moreover, that this lattice is functorial in $X$. For this, we extend the results of Bhatt–Morrow–Scholze on the construction and the analysis of an $A_{\text{inf}}$-valued cohomology theory of $p$-adic formal, proper, smooth ${\mathcal{O}}_{\overline{K}}$-schemes $\mathfrak{X}$ to the semistable case. The relation of the $A_{\text{inf}}$-cohomology to the $p$-adic étale and the logarithmic crystalline cohomologies allows us to reprove the semistable conjecture of Fontaine–Jannsen.

By work of Looijenga and others, one understands the relationship between Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) and Baily–Borel compactifications for the moduli spaces of degree-$2$ $K3$ surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and a few other related examples. The similar-looking cases of degree-$4$ $K3$ surfaces and double Eisenbud–Popescu–Walter (EPW) sextics turn out to be much more complicated for arithmetic reasons. In this paper, we refine work of Looijenga in order to handle these cases. Specifically, in analogy with the so-called Hassett–Keel program for the moduli space of curves, we study the variation of log canonical models for locally symmetric varieties of Type IV associated to $D$-lattices. In particular, for the $19$-dimensional case, we conjecturally obtain a continuous one-parameter interpolation between the GIT and Baily–Borel compactifications for the moduli of degree-$4$ $K3$ surfaces. The analogous $18$-dimensional case, which corresponds to hyperelliptic degree-$4$ $K3$ surfaces, can be verified by means of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory (VGIT) quotients.

We prove that the monodromy group of a reduced irreducible square system of general polynomial equations equals the symmetric group. This is a natural first step towards the Galois theory of general systems of polynomial equations, because arbitrary systems split into reduced irreducible ones upon monomial changes of variables. In particular, our result proves the multivariate version of the Abel–Ruffini theorem: the classification of general systems of equations solvable by radicals reduces to the classification of lattice polytopes of mixed volume 4 (which we prove to be finite in every dimension). We also notice that the monodromy of every general system of equations is either symmetric or imprimitive. The proof is based on a new result of independent importance regarding dual defectiveness of systems of equations: the discriminant of a reduced irreducible square system of general polynomial equations is a hypersurface unless the system is linear up to a monomial change of variables.

We study the problem of how the dual complex of the special fiber of a strict normal crossings degeneration $\mathscr{X}_{R}$ changes under products. We view the dual complex as a skeleton inside the Berkovich space associated to $X_{K}$. Using the Kato fan, we define a skeleton $\text{Sk}(\mathscr{X}_{R})$ when the model $\mathscr{X}_{R}$ is log-regular. We show that if $\mathscr{X}_{R}$ and $\mathscr{Y}_{R}$ are log-smooth, and at least one is semistable, then $\text{Sk}(\mathscr{X}_{R}\times _{R}\mathscr{Y}_{R})\simeq \text{Sk}(\mathscr{X}_{R})\times \text{Sk}(\mathscr{Y}_{R})$. The essential skeleton $\text{Sk}(X_{K})$, defined by Mustaţă and Nicaise, is a birational invariant of $X_{K}$ and is independent of the choice of $R$-model. We extend their definition to pairs, and show that if both $X_{K}$ and $Y_{K}$ admit semistable models, $\text{Sk}(X_{K}\times _{K}Y_{K})\simeq \text{Sk}(X_{K})\times \text{Sk}(Y_{K})$. As an application, we compute the homeomorphism type of the dual complex of some degenerations of hyper-Kähler varieties. We consider both the case of the Hilbert scheme of a semistable degeneration of K3 surfaces, and the generalized Kummer construction applied to a semistable degeneration of abelian surfaces. In both cases we find that the dual complex of the $2n$-dimensional degeneration is homeomorphic to a point, $n$-simplex, or $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{n}$, depending on the type of the degeneration.

We study Tate motives with integral coefficients through the lens of tensor triangular geometry. For some base fields, including $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\overline{\mathbb{F}_{p}}$, we arrive at a complete description of the tensor triangular spectrum and a classification of the thick tensor ideals.

We study the variation of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$-invariants in Hida families with residually reducible Galois representations. We prove a lower bound for these invariants which is often expressible in terms of the $p$-adic zeta function. This lower bound forces these $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$-invariants to be unbounded along the family, and we conjecture that this lower bound is an equality. When $U_{p}-1$ generates the cuspidal Eisenstein ideal, we establish this conjecture and further prove that the $p$-adic $L$-function is simply a power of $p$ up to a unit (i.e. $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=0$). On the algebraic side, we prove analogous statements for the associated Selmer groups which, in particular, establishes the main conjecture for such forms.

Let $K$ be a two-dimensional global field of characteristic $\neq 2$ and let $V$ be a divisorial set of places of $K$. We show that for a given $n\geqslant 5$, the set of $K$-isomorphism classes of spinor groups $G=\operatorname{Spin}_{n}(q)$ of nondegenerate $n$-dimensional quadratic forms over $K$ that have good reduction at all $v\in V$ is finite. This result yields some other finiteness properties, such as the finiteness of the genus $\mathbf{gen}_{K}(G)$ and the properness of the global-to-local map in Galois cohomology. The proof relies on the finiteness of the unramified cohomology groups $H^{i}(K,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2})_{V}$ for $i\geqslant 1$ established in the paper. The results for spinor groups are then extended to some unitary groups and to groups of type $\mathsf{G}_{2}$.

In his work on deformation quantization of algebraic varieties Kontsevich introduced the notion of algebroid as a certain generalization of a sheaf of algebras. We construct algebroids which are given locally by NC-smooth thickenings in the sense of Kapranov, over two classes of smooth varieties: the bases of miniversal families of vector bundles on projective curves, and the bases of miniversal families of quiver representations.

In this paper we study the subgroup of the Picard group of Voevodsky’s category of geometric motives $\operatorname{DM}_{\text{gm}}(k;\mathbb{Z}/2)$ generated by the reduced motives of affine quadrics. Our main tools here are the functors of Bachmann [On the invertibility of motives of affine quadrics, Doc. Math. 22 (2017), 363–395], but we also provide an alternative method. We show that the group in question can be described in terms of indecomposable direct summands in the motives of projective quadrics over $k$. In particular, we describe all the relations among the reduced motives of affine quadrics. We also extend the criterion of motivic equivalence of projective quadrics.

The Chabauty–Kim method allows one to find rational points on curves under certain technical conditions, generalising Chabauty’s proof of the Mordell conjecture for curves with Mordell–Weil rank less than their genus. We show how the Chabauty–Kim method, when these technical conditions are satisfied in depth 2, may be applied to bound the number of rational points on a curve of higher rank. This provides a non-abelian generalisation of Coleman’s effective Chabauty theorem.

The profinite completion of the fundamental group of a closed, orientable $3$-manifold determines the Kneser–Milnor decomposition. If $M$ is irreducible, then the profinite completion determines the Jaco–Shalen–Johannson decomposition of $M$.
