Abstract

This paper discusses the iconographic identification of numbers associated with two types of time computation embodied in Teotihuacan art during the Classic period (AD 150–650). A first analysis of mural paintings from the altar of Atetelco identifies six icons related to numbers and a mathematical symbol, which were employed for counting cycles of 104 tropical years, and 72 and 7,300 synodic cycles of Venus. A second analysis shows that both counts were recorded in Teotihuacan-style art, using an iconography that differs from the traditional numerical system of dots and bars. Teotihuacan dates can be chronologically correlated with Maya long-count registries, thus allowing us to date archaeological monuments and artifacts through iconography. Evidence shows that teotihuacanos measured time in the long term, registering counts in complex artworks as part of the institutionalization of time recording.
