The awareness and adoption of conservation tillage is one of the most important changes taking place in agriculture today. There are, however, concerns regarding weed species shifts under conservation tillage. Under conservation tillage, shifts toward grass, perennial, wind-disseminated weeds and volunteer crop plants have been observed. Shifts in weed species composition may either represent long-term ecological succession or temporary fluctuations in species composition; few long-term studies have examined the ecology of these shifts in detail. Further studies are needed to identify mechanisms driving these shifts to determine whether they are fluctuational or successional and to develop more sophisticated management strategies. In this paper, we present a research approach for studying ecological processes such as competition within a hierarchical framework of all possible causes, processes, and defining factors related to weed succession under conservation tillage. Succession management strategies can be developed to act at the causal level in the successional hierarchy. Three primary causes are site availability, colonization, and species performance. Site availability may be controlled through “designed disturbance”, while differential species availability may be regulated through “controlled colonization” and species performance may be regulated through “controlled species performance”. In general, the goals of succession management would involve reducing populations of the weed species most likely to proliferate under conservation tillage. Comprehensive ecological research, within the hierarchical framework outlined here, would identify potential problems and enable management strategies to account for the numerous factors that may be influencing fluctuations and succession of weeds under conservation tillage.

Field studies were conducted to evaluate potato injury and weed control with postemergence-directed (PDIR) bromoxynil, glufosinate, or monocarbamide dihydrogen sulfate (MCDS). All three herbicides controlled hairy nightshade, common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and kochia ≥ 85%, depending on rate, with either mid- or late-PDIR treatment. Bromoxynil or MCDS caused 5 to 6% more initial injury with mid- than with late-PDIR treatment, but total yield and yield of U.S. #1 tubers were not reduced by either herbicide. PDIR glufosinate caused moderate injury at 0.84 kg ha−1, the rate needed for acceptable (≥ 85%) weed control. Total yield was reduced 10% and U.S. #1 yield was reduced 30% by PDIR glufosinate at 0.84 kg ha−1. Thus bromoxynil and MCDS showed potential for use as PDIR treatments in potatoes, but glufosinate did not.

Fenoxaprop, fluazifop/fluazifop-P, haloxyfop, and quizalofop at 0.14 kg ai ha−1 and sethoxydim at 0.28 kg ai ha−1 were applied broadcast over-the-top in spray volumes of 94 and 374 L ha−1, each at 138 and 345 kPa, to control johnsongrass in soybeans over a 5-yr period. The two spray volumes provided equal control, but control was better when treatments were applied at 345 kPa than at 138 kPa. There were no significant interactions among herbicides, spray volumes, or spray pressures. Most of the spray was deposited on the upper surface of the plant canopy. Less than 10% of the herbicide spray applied penetrated into the canopy onto water-sensitive spray cards located 10, 20, 30, or 40 cm above the ground.

Field experiments were conducted over a 3-yr period at three locations to evaluate lactofen at rates of 110 to 220 g ai ha−1 applied POST in combination with chlorimuron at 9 g ae ha−1 for weed control in soybean. At St. Joseph in 1989 and Baton Rouge in 1990, lactofen at 110, 150, and 170 g ha−1 in combination with chlorimuron controlled prickly sida (3 to 5 cm) and entireleaf and pitted morningglory (5 to 13 cm) comparable with the full rate of lactofen at 220 g ha−1 plus chlorimuron and the standard treatment of acifluorfen at 280 g ae ha−1 plus bentazon at 560 g ae ha−1. Entireleaf morningglory and sicklepod control at Alexandria with lactofen at 110 to 170 g ha−1 plus chlorimuron was comparable with that from the full rate of lactofen plus chlorimuron and better than with acifluorfen plus bentazon. Weed control was reduced when soil moisture was deficient at treatment time or when prickly sida height was more than 5 cm and entireleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and sicklepod more than 15 cm. In related studies at St. Joseph, a reduced rate of lactofen (170 g ha−1) in combination with chlorimuron controlled prickly sida 98%, pitted morningglory 93%, and entireleaf morningglory 90% in 1988, which was comparable with the control from the full rate of lactofen plus chlorimuron and with acifluorfen plus bentazon.

Chlorimuron applied alone and in combination with acifluorfen or thifensulfuron was evaluated for POST control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, common cocklebur, and a mixture of pitted, ivyleaf, entireleaf, and tall morningglory in soybean. Common cocklebur control was similar with thifensulfuron at 3 and 4 g ae ha−1 and with chlorimuron at 7 and 9 g ae ha−1, Common ragweed and morningglory control was greater with chlorimuron while common lambsquarters control was greater with thifensulfuron. Control of all species was good with combinations of chlorimuron at 7 g ha−1 plus thifensulfuron at 2 g ha−1 or acifluorfen at 140 g ae ha−1 and similar to or greater than the control with chlorimuron at 9 g ha−1. Soybean yields with all POST herbicide treatments were equivalent to that of the weed-free check.

The influence of adjuvants, inorganic salts, and herbicide formulations on the antagonistic effect of Na-bentazon on sethoxydim absorption was studied in quackgrass. Adjuvant BCH 815 00, at 2.4 L ha−1 alone or at 1.2 L ha−1 combined with 1.1 kg ha−1 of ammonium sulfate, added to the sethoxydim and Na-bentazon spray mixture overcame the antagonism on 14C-sethoxydim absorption in quackgrass. Crop oil concentrate at rates up to 9.6 L ha−1 did not overcome the antagonism. Adding ammonium phosphate or ammonium nitrate to the spray solution was as effective as adding ammonium sulfate in overcoming the antagonism caused by reduced absorption of sethoxydim even from the combination of Na-bentazon plus Na-acifluorfen. Ammonium salts and NH4-bentazon overcame the antagonism of Na-bentazon by forming readily absorbed NH4-sethoxydim.

Greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate graminicidal resistance of selected ornamental grasses. Blue fescue cultivars ‘Blue Glow’, ‘Sea Urchin’, ‘Spring Blue’, and ‘Superba’ were resistant to 1× (medium use rate) and 2× rates of fenoxaprop, fluazifop-P, quizalofop, and sethoxydim, whereas fountain grass, ravenna grass, and switchgrass were sensitive. Minor (<20%) visible phytotoxicity was observed on some fescues treated with the 2× rate of fluazifop-P at 14 but not at 69 days after treatment (DAT). Fountain grass, ravenna grass, and switchgrass exhibited severe (>70%) phytotoxicity from all herbicides 69 DAT. Mortality of non-fescues ranged from 55% (fountain grass) to 96% (ravenna grass).

In field studies conducted under weed-free conditions, soybean yield was not adversely affected with POST applications of AC 263,222 at 18 g ha−1. At 36 g ha−1, soybean height at maturity was reduced in three of five studies and soybean yield in two of five studies. Application of 9 g ha−1 of AC 263,222 to sicklepod at cotyledon to four-leaf (early POST) or at a maximum size of five-leaf (late POST) provided 30 to 48% control. Control was 54 to 73% with AC 263,222 at 9 g ha−1 applied early POST followed by late POST. Regardless of application rate or timing, sicklepod control with AC 263,222 generally was inferior to the standard treatments of pendimethalin plus imazaquin PPI followed by imazaquin late POST or pendimethalin PPI and metribuzin PRE followed by chlorimuron late POST. Compared with the weed-free check, soybean yield was reduced when AC 263,222 was applied at 9 g ha−1 early POST followed by late POST in one of two studies and in two of three studies when applied at 18 g ha−1 early POST.

Glyphosate toxicity to wheat was antagonized more by calcium chloride than sodium bicarbonate. Mixtures of the salts at greater than 100 mg L−1 sodium bicarbonate and 200 mg L−1 calcium chloride were additive in antagonism of glyphosate in the greenhouse experiments. Surfactant and oil adjuvants did not overcome sodium bicarbonate or calcium chloride antagonism of glyphosate. Oil adjuvants were generally antagonistic to glyphosate. An equation is presented that determines the amount of diammonium sulfate required to overcome glyphosate antagonism based upon the sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium cations in the spray carrier.

The uptake, translocation, and metabolism of the ethyl ester of chlorimuron in three soybean cultivars and two morningglory species was investigated. Soybean used included the normal cultivars ‘Vance’ and ‘Essex,’ and the sulfonylurea-resistant cultivar ‘W-20.’ Entireleaf morningglory and pitted morningglory, both moderately tolerant to chlorimuron, were used. Twenty-day-old seedlings of all plant species were exposed to root-applied 14C-labeled chlorimuron for 6, 24, and 72 h. After 24 and 72 h, chlorimuron uptake was lowest in W-20 soybean and the two morningglory species. Translocation of root-absorbed chlorimuron to shoots and leaves of all species was limited and it did not differ among species. The moderate tolerance of pitted and entireleaf morningglories to chlorimuron may be due to reduced herbicide uptake. The response of Essex and Vance soybean to chlorimuron was related to herbicide metabolism. At 6 h after treatment with radiolabeled chlorimuron, Essex soybean metabolized the herbicide more rapidly than either W-20 or Vance soybean. At 24 h and 72 h, Essex and Vance soybean metabolized chlorimuron to the same extent. W-20 was not very efficient in metabolizing chlorimuron at any time after treatment and its resistance to chlorimuron is due to an altered target site.

Sweet potato clones were evaluated for metribuzin tolerance in field and greenhouse studies. ‘Tinian’ was the most tolerant and ‘SC-1149-19’ and ‘J-2’ were the most susceptible clones. ‘Jewel’, a clone widely grown commercially, was sensitive to metribuzin in the field and greenhouse. ‘Sumor’ and ‘White Triumph’ exhibited intermediate metribuzin tolerance. All metribuzin application-by-rate treatments reduced plant stands, caused season-long crop injury, and reduced yields. Metribuzin applied 3 wk posttransplant at 1.1 kg ha−1 did not reduce total yield of Tinian. Total yield of all the clones except Tinian were reduced by metribuzin regardless of timing or rate.

The effect of delayed harvest was investigated with two soybean cultivars that were grown weed free or in competition with johnsongrass or hemp sesbania over a 3-yr period. Johnsongrass reduced the yield of early-maturing ‘Hill’ soybean 32, 35, and 36% when harvested at an average of 1, 2, or 3 wk after maturity, when compared to weed-free yields of 2490, 2430, and 2270 kg ha−1, respectively. Late-maturing ‘Lee 68’ yields were reduced 27, 29, and 39% on three harvest dates compared to weed-free yields of 2570, 2310, and 2200 kg ha−1, respectively. Seed grades of both cultivars improved with delayed harvest, but this was offset when johnsongrass was present. Hemp sesbania reduced yields of Hill 23% on the first harvest date and 26% on the second and third dates. Yields of Lee 68 were reduced 16, 22, and 28% by hemp sesbania on three successive harvest dates. The value of soybean yields adjusted for excessive foreign material, moisture, and damaged kernels was decreased by delayed harvest when hemp sesbania was present in Lee 68 and when johnsongrass was present in both cultivars.

Imazethapyr, alone and in combination with other herbicides, was applied PPI, PRE, and POST to pinto beans to determine weed control and selectivity to the crop. All of the herbicides improved pinto bean yield as compared with the unweeded control. Imazethapyr applied PPI and POST provided excellent control of black nightshade, kochia, Russian thistle, prostrate pigweed, and redroot pigweed. Barnyardgrass control with imazethapyr ranged from 58 to 96% and increased to 98% or greater when imazethapyr was combined with metolachlor, pendimethalin, trifluralin, or EPTC. Pinto bean yield was not reduced from any herbicide treatment compared to the handweeded control.

The efficacy of reduced rates of fomesafen, bentazon plus acifluorfen, and chlorimuron, in combination with sethoxydim was investigated in New Jersey from 1989 to 1991. Herbicides applied at sequential 0.25x rates controlled common lambsquarters, common ragweed, and stinkgrass. Chlorimuron plus sethoxydim did not control common lambsquarters at any rate. Generally, herbicides applied at 0.5x rates were not as effective as the full or sequential 0.25x rates. Yields of plots treated with reduced rates were equal to or greater than those treated with full rates.

Absorption of 14C-imazaquin by leaves of field-grown flue-cured tobacco was similar when applied to young seedlings immediately after transplanting or to plants 3 wk after transplanting. The distribution of 14C in treated leaves indicated that 40% was absorbed, 54% remained in water extracts of leaf surfaces, and 6% was found in the epicuticular wax layer 8 d after treatment. Translocation of the herbicide from treated leaves to roots was very low (4 to 5%). In contrast, soil applications of imazaquin and subsequent uptake by roots resulted in retention of 40 to 53% in roots and translocation of 47 to 60% to shoots after 8 d. Analyses of methanol-soluble extracts of 14C indicated that more than 77% of the foliar-applied herbicide was metabolized in roots and upper shoots after 2 d. Similarly, 64% or more of the imazaquin was degraded in roots and shoots 2 d after root absorption.

During 1990, injury to tomatoes grown on the narrow land between the Albufera Lake (Spain) and the Mediterranean Sea was attributed to use of irrigation water coming from adjacent rice fields containing bensulfuron and quinclorac. A tomato root bioassay was developed to detect the herbicides in 10 ml of water. The assay was more sensitive to bensulfuron (0.5 ng ml−1) than quinclorac (100 ng ml−1). Only 30 ml of the affected water are necessary to conduct the test. Albufera water, sampled at three sites during 1991 and one during 1992 in the irrigation network canals caused different tomato main root length responses.

Concern about the effects of pesticides on the environment and the desire to reduce purchased inputs are stimuli to reduce herbicide use. Field research was conducted at two locations for two growing seasons to identify integrated weed management practices in corn that are effective and economical. Weed control treatments included PRE application of a herbicide mixture of 1.8 kg ai ha−1 of atrazine plus 2.2 kg ai ha−1 of metolachlor alone, this mixture broadcast or band-applied at a reduced rate in combination with mechanical weeding, and mechanical weeding alone. Weed control, corn yield, and economic returns were generally higher in treatments combining herbicides and mechanical weeding than those using only mechanical measures. Without herbicides, timeliness of rotary hoeing was critical. Herbicide use can be reduced 50 to 75% in integrated systems with minimal risk of yield loss due to uncontrolled weeds.

Experiments were conducted to compare rates and formulations of quinclorac for postemergent control of slender speedwell in cool-season turf. A 50% ae wettable powder formulation (50WP) was compared with two granular formulations, a 1% clay granule (1G) and a 0.4% corn cob granule (0.4G). Each formulation was applied at 0.3, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.1 kg ha−1. Additionally, 2,4-D at 1.1 kg ha−1 was applied alone and in combination with quinclorac 50WP at 0.8 kg ha−1. Slender speedwell control with the 50WP or 0.4G formulations was superior to that obtained with the 1G. At lower rates, slender speedwell control with the 50WP was greater than with the 0.4G; however, the rates required to obtain 95% control were not significantly different. Tank mixing quinclorac 50WP at 0.8 kg ha−1 with 2,4-D at 1.1 kg ha−1 did not improve slender speedwell control but increased roughstalk bluegrass injury. Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue were not injured by quinclorac. Roughstalk bluegrass and chewings fescue were temporarily discolored. Turf injury was rate-related and more severe with the 50WP than the 1G formulation.

An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for EPTC was developed that may be useful for predicting enhanced carbamothioate herbicide degradation in adapted soils. A modified radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure was used to detect antibodies specific for EPTC and establish antibody dilutions for optimum ELISA sensitivity. Antibodies were obtained from a rabbit injected with a butylate-analog protein conjugate. An indirect ELISA subsequently was developed for EPTC with a detection range of 10 to 1280 ng ml−1 in a 1:3 aqueous dilution of a 90:10 (v/v) acetonitrile (ACN):water soil extract. EPTC recovery from soil was > 96%, as determined by conventional gas chromatography. Measurement of low concentrations of residual EPTC with the ELISA was less quantitative than by gas chromatography, but the immunoassay provided a rapid, potentially cost-effective method for screening soils to determine enhanced carbamothioate degradation.
