This article describes a method to turn astronomical imaging into a random number generator by using the positions of incident cosmic rays and hot pixels to generate bit streams. We subject the resultant bit streams to a battery of standard benchmark statistical tests for randomness and show that these bit streams are statistically the same as a perfect random bit stream. Strategies for improving and building upon this method are outlined.

Motivated by recent suggestions that strange stars can be responsible for glitches and other observational features of pulsars, we review some possible equations of state and their implications for models of neutron, hybrid, and strange stars. We consider the MIT bag model and also strange matter in the colour–flavour locked phase. The central energy densities for strange stars are higher than the central densities of ordinary neutron stars. Strange stars are bound by the strong force and so can also rotate much faster than neutron stars. These results are only weakly dependent on the model used for the quark matter. If just one of the existing mass-to-radius ratio constraint is valid, most neutron stars equations of state are ruled out, but all the strange stars equations of state presented in this work remain consistent with the constraint.

We examine the historical development of astrophysical science in Antarctica from the early 20th century until today. We find three temporally overlapping eras, each having a rather distinct beginning. These are the astrogeological era of meteorite discovery, the high energy era of particle detectors, and the photon astronomy era of microwave, submillimetre, and infrared telescopes, sidelined by a few niche experiments at optical wavelengths. The favourable atmospheric and geophysical conditions are briefly examined, followed by an account of the major experiments and a summary of their results.

Giant laser interferometers are currently ‘listening’ for gravitational waves but are they sensitive enough? I briefly review the status of the global effort to detect gravity waves and overview Australia's role.

We present the results of 26 nights of CCD photometry of the nova V2540 Oph (2002) from 2003 to 2004. We find a period of 0.284781 ± 0.000006 d (6.8347 ± 0.0001 h) in the data. Since this period was present in the light curves taken in both years, with no apparent change in its value or amplitude, we interpret it as the orbital period of the nova binary system. The mass–period relation for cataclysmic variables yields a secondary mass of about 0.75 ± 0.04 M⊙. From maximum magnitude–rate of decline relation, we estimate a maximum absolute visual magnitude of MV = −6.2 ± 0.4 mag. This value leads to an uncorrected distance modulus of (m – M) = 14.7 ± 0.7. By using the interstellar reddening for the location of V2540 Oph, we find a rough estimate for the distance of 5.2 ± 0.8 kpc. We propose that V2540 Oph is either (1) a high-inclination cataclysmic variable showing a reflection effect of the secondary star, or having a spiral structure in the accretion disc, (2) a high-inclination intermediate polar system, or less likely (3) a polar.

The mean abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe based on both strong and weak lines of α Cen A are determined by matching the observed line profiles with those synthesised from stellar atmospheric models and comparing these results with a similar analysis for the Sun. There is good agreement between the abundances from strong and weak lines.

Strong lines should generally be an excellent indicator of abundance and far easier to measure than the weak lines normally used. Until the development of the Anstee, Barklem, and O'Mara (ABO) theory for collisional line broadening, the uncertainty in the value of the damping constant prevented strong lines being used for abundance determinations other than in close differential analyses.

We found that α Cen A has a mean overabundance of 0.12 ± 0.06 dex compared to solar mean abundances. This result agrees remarkably well with previous studies that did not use strong lines or the ABO theory for collisional line broadening. Our result supports the conclusion that reliable abundances can be derived from strong lines provided this new theory for line broadening is used to calculate the van der Waals damping.

The Antarctic Plateau holds great promise for optical astronomy. One relatively unstudied feature of the polar night sky for optical astronomical observing is the potential contamination of observations by aurorae. In this study we analyse auroral measurements at South Pole Station and show that during an average winter season, the auroral contribution to the B band sky brightness is below 21.9 B mag arcsec−2 for 50% of the observing time. In V band, the median sky brightness contribution is 20.8 mag arcsec−2 during an average winter. South Pole Station is situated within the auroral zone and experiences strong and frequent auroral activity. The Antarctic locations of Dome C and Dome A are closer to the geomagnetic pole where auroral activity is greatly reduced compared with that of South Pole Station. Calculations based on satellite measurements of electron flux above the Antarctic Plateau are used to show that at Dome C, the contribution to sky background in the B and V bands is up to 3.1 mag less than that at the South Pole. The use of notch filters to reduce the contribution from the strongest auroral emission lines and bands is also discussed. The scientific potential of an extremely large telescope located at Dome C is discussed, with reference to the effect that auroral emissions would have on particular astronomical observations.

We present the results obtained from unfiltered photometric CCD observations of the newly discovered cataclysmic variable SDSS J040714.78–064425.1 made during seven nights in 2003 November. We establish the dwarf nova nature of the object as it was in outburst during our observations. We also confirm the presence of deep eclipses with a period of 0.17017 ± 0.00003 d in the optical light curve of the star. In addition, we found periods of 0.166 ± 0.001 d and possibly also 5.3 ± 0.7 d in the data. The 0.17017 d periodicity is consistent within the errors with the proposed orbital period of 0.165 and 0.1700 d. Using the known relation between the orbital and superhump periods, we interpret the 0.166 and 5.3 d periods as the negative superhump and the nodal precession period respectively. SDSS J040714.78–064425.1 is then classified as a negative superhump system with one of the largest orbital periods.

Satellite cloud imagery is a standard tool of meteorology, and also of ground-based observational astronomy. Fast access to cloud imagery through the Internet now permits more accurate prediction of local cloud cover than was formerly the case. This is particularly useful for automatic and remotely operated telescopes, where an observer may be at a considerable distance from the telescope itself. Since satellite imagery can now be accessed through the Internet with such ease, direct reception of radio transmissions from weather satellites may seem unnecessary. However, advances in computing power and radio receiver technology permit simple automated receipt of satellite transmissions, particularly from the NOAA series of low Earth orbit satellites. This has the advantage of more up-to-date, and higher resolution, cloud imagery than can be obtained from the Internet. We have operated such a satellite receiving station since 2003 April, and have found it particularly useful when remotely operating our telescopes at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO). By automatically publishing our cloud imagery onto the World Wide Web we have established a resource that is widely used by other local observatories and by the general public.

The number of known millisecond pulsars has dramatically increased in the last few years. Regular observations of these pulsars may allow gravitational waves with frequencies ∼10−9 Hz to be detected. A ‘pulsar timing array’ is therefore complimentary to other searches for gravitational waves using ground-based or space-based interferometers that are sensitive to much higher frequencies. In this review we describe (1) the basic methods for using an array of pulsars as a gravitational wave detector, (2) the sources of the potentially detectable waves, (3) current limits on individual sources and a stochastic background, and (4) the new project recently started using the Parkes radio telescope.

Following the end of the Second World War, the CSIRO Radiophysics Laboratory applied the expertise and surplus radar equipment acquired during the war to problems of astronomy. Gordon Stanley was among the first group of scientists and engineers to work in the exciting new field of radio astronomy. Like many of his contemporaries, he had a strong background in radio and electronics but none in astronomy. At the Radiophysics Laboratory, and later at Caltech, Stanley developed innovative new radio telescopes and sophisticated instrumentation which resulted in important new discoveries that changed, in a fundamental way, our understanding of the Universe. He was one of those who played a key role in the early development of radio astronomy both in Australia and the United States.

Accurate automatic identification of astronomical objects in an imperfect world of non-linear wide-angle optics, imperfect optics, inaccurately pointed telescopes, and defect-ridden cameras is not always a trivial first step. In the past few years, this problem has been exacerbated by the rise of digital imaging, providing vast digital streams of astronomical images and data. In the modern age of increasing bandwidth, human identifications are many times impracticably slow. In order to perform an automatic computer-based analysis of astronomical frames, a quick and accurate identification of astronomical objects is required. Such identification must follow a rigorous transformation from topocentric celestial coordinates into image coordinates on a CCD frame. This paper presents a fuzzy logic based algorithm that estimates needed coordinate transformations in a practical setting. Using a training set of reference stars, the algorithm statically builds a fuzzy logic model. At runtime, the algorithm uses this model to associate stellar objects visible in the frames to known cataloged objects, and generates files that contain photometry information of objects visible in the frame. Use of this algorithm facilitates real-time monitoring of stars and bright transients, allowing identifications and alerts to be issued more reliably. The algorithm is being implemented by the Night Sky Live all-sky monitoring global network and has shown itself significantly more reliable than the previously used non-fuzzy logic algorithm.

In this contribution a broad overview of the methodologies of cosmological N-body simulations and a short introduction explaining the general idea behind such simulations is presented. After explaining how to set up the initial conditions using a set of N particles two (diverse) techniques are presented for evolving these particles forward in time under the influence of their self-gravity. One technique (tree codes) is solely based upon a sophistication of the direct particle–particle summation whereas the other method relies on the continuous (de-)construction of arbitrarily shaped grids and is realized in adaptive mesh refinement codes.

We evaluated new colour transformations for the Sloan photometry by 224 standards and used them to revise both the equations for photometric parallax estimation and metallicity calibration cited by Karaali et al. (2003). This process improves the metallicity and absolute magnitude estimations by [Fe/H] ≤ 0.3 dex and Mg′H ≥ 0.1 mag respectively. There is a high correlation for metallicities and absolute magnitudes derived for two systems, UBV and Sloan, by means of the revised calibrations.

The short-period (0d.34) close binary V508 Oph was observed in 2005 and four new times of minima were derived. All of the available times of minima, including the new ones, covering 69 years were analyzed. It was shown that the period change of the system is very complex. Two possible period oscillations with periods of 24.73 and 9.91 years and amplitudes of about 0.011 and 0.002 day, respectively, were found to superimpose on upward parabolic change, indicating a secular period increase at a rate of dp/dt = 4.24 × 10−9 days yr−1. The mechanisms that could explain the period changes of the system are discussed.

Cold dark matter cosmologies successfully accounts for the distribution of matter on large scales. On smaller scales, these cosmological models predict that galaxies like our own Milky Way should be enveloped in massive dark matter halos. Furthermore, these halos should be significantly flattened or even triaxial. Recent observational evidence, drawn from the demise of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy as it is cannibalized by our own, indicates that the potential of the Milky Way must be close to spherical. While the precise interpretation of the observational evidence is under debate, an apparently spherical halo may signify a pronounced failing of dark matter models, and may even indicate a failure in our fundamental understanding of gravity.

Given the growing use of Sérsic's (1963, 1968) R1/n model for describing the stellar distributions in galaxies, and the lack of any single reference that provides the various associated mathematical expressions, we have endeavoured to compile such a resource here. We present the standard intensity profile, and its various guises such as the luminosity, surface-brightness, and aperture–magnitude profile. Expressions to transform the effective surface brightness into the mean effective and central surface brightness are also given, as is the expression to transform between effective radii and exponential scale-lengths. We additionally provide expressions for deriving the ‘concentration’ of an R1/n profile, and two useful equations for the logarithmic slope of the light-profile are given. Petrosian radii and fluxes are also derived for a range of Sérsic profiles and compared with the effective radii and total flux. Similarly, expressions to obtain Kron radii and fluxes are presented as a function of the Sérsic index n and the number of effective radii sampled. Illustrative figures are provided throughout. Finally, the core–Sérsic model, consisting of an inner power-law and an outer Sérsic function, is presented.

Observational evidence indicating that the expansion of the universe is accelerating has surprised cosmologists in recent years. Cosmological models have sought to explain this acceleration by incorporating ‘dark energy’, of which the traditional cosmological constant is just one possible candidate. Several cosmological models involving an evolving equation of state of the dark energy have been proposed, as well as possible energy exchange to other components, such as dark matter. This paper summarizes the forms of the most prominent models and discusses their implications for cosmology and astrophysics. Finally, this paper examines the current and future observational constraints on the nature of dark energy.

High-resolution échelle spectra of 42 nearby southern solar-type stars have been obtained, in a search for young, single, active, and rapidly rotating sun-like stars suitable for Doppler imaging and Zeeman Doppler imaging studies. As a result of this survey, 13 stars were determined to be youthful with ages less than 600 Myr (Hyades age) and eight of these were found to have projected rotational velocities in excess of 15 km s−1. In addition, five spectroscopic binary systems were identified. Of those stars observed for this survey, HD 106506 is the most outstanding target for mapping active regions. It is an apparently young and single star with rapid rotation (v sin i ∼ 80 km s−1), strong Hα chromospheric activity (log R′Hα ∼ −4.2), and deformation of the spectral line profiles indicating the presence of large starspots.
