The outer halos of massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) are dark matter dominated and may have formed by accretion of smaller systems during galaxy evolution. Here a brief report is given of some recent work on the kinematics, angular momentum, and mass distributions of simulated ETG halos, and of corresponding properties of observed halos measured with planetary nebulae (PNe) as tracers. In the outermost regions of the Virgo-central galaxy M87, the PN data show that the stellar halo and the co-spatial intracluster light are distinct kinematic components.

The extraction of foreground and CMB maps from multi-frequency observations relies mostly on the different frequency behavior of the different components. Existing Bayesian methods additionally make use of a Gaussian prior for the CMB whose correlation structure is described by an unknown angular power spectrum. We argue for the natural extension of this by using non-trivial priors also for the foreground components. Focusing on diffuse Galactic foregrounds, we propose a log-normal model including unknown spatial correlations within each component and cross-correlations between the different foreground components. We present case studies at low resolution that demonstrate the superior performance of this model when compared to an analysis with flat priors for all components.

The circum-nuclear region in an active galaxy is often complex with presence of high excitation gas, collimated radio outflow, and star formation activities, besides the actively accreting supermassive black hole. The unique spatial resolving power of Chandra X-ray imaging spectroscopy enables more investigations to disentangle the active galactic nuclei and starburst activities. For galaxies in the throes of a violent merging event such as NGC6240, we were able to resolve the high temperature gas surrounding its binary active black holes and discovered a large scale soft X-ray halo.

The detection of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) in the Very High Energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) range is challenging, mainly because of their steep soft spectra and distance. Nevertheless four FSRQs are now known to be VHE emitters. The detection of the VHE γ-rays has challenged the emission models of these sources. The sources are also found to exhibit very different behavior. I will give an overview of what is known about the VHE emission of these sources and about the multiwavelength signatures that are connected to the VHE gamma-ray emission.

Young associations, being sparsely populated and relatively close to the Sun, their members are found all over the sky. In the Solar Neighborhood, young moving groups are found within 100 pc with ages ranging from 5 to 120 Myr. While known members of these groups were identified mostly through the Hipparcos data, only the most massive members have been fully characterized so far, and defined the core members. In the last decades, several new candidate members have been identified, using different approaches. Based on the global properties of the core members (kinematics and over luminosity), those methods used several criteria to establish the membership, from qualitative manner to quantitive methods using reduced chi-squared or membership probability. A full confirmation of the membership for those numerous candidates requires radial velocity and parallax measurements to confirm their kinematics, age-dating indicator measurement to assess their youth and multiplicity follow-up to rule out binary objects. In this proceeding, we summarize a general recipe to assign membership, describe the numerous challenges for assigning membership, and end with a discussion on the appropriateness and reliability of the BANYAN I and II tools to assess membership.

We present the ambitious project J-PAS, that will cover 8000 deg2 of the northern sky with 54 narrow-band (∼145Å) contiguous filters, all of them in the optical range (3700Å-9200Å). J-PAS will provide a low resolution spectra (R ∼ 50) in every pixel of the northern sky by 2020, leading to excellent photometric redshifts (0.3% uncertainty) of 100 million sources. J-PAS will permit the study of the 2D properties of nearby galaxies with unprecedented statistics. Some viable studies are the distribution of the star formation rate traced by Hα, the stellar populations gradients in elliptical galaxies up to a few effective radii, or the impact of environment in galaxy properties. In summary, J-PAS will bring a superb data set for 3D analysis in the local Universe.

We consider the role of the dwarf planet Ceres on the secular dynamics of the asteroid main belt. Specifically, we examine the post impact evolution of asteroid families due to the interaction of their members with the linear nodal secular resonance with Ceres. First, we find the location of this resonance and identify which asteroid families are crossed by its path. Next, we summarize our results for three asteroid families, namely (1726) Hoffmeister, (1128) Astrid and (1521) Seinajoki which have irregular distributions of their members in the proper elements space, indicative of the effect of the resonance. We confirm this by performing a set of numerical simulations, showcasing that the perturbing action of Ceres through its linear nodal secular resonance is essential to reproduce the actual shape of the families.

Within the literature there are at least 15 references indicating that the horizontal magnetic flux does not exactly balance vertical flux in sunspots, leading to the surprising result that div $\vec{B}$ would depart from zero. Intuitively, this has to be related to the stratification at the surface of the star, due to which horizontal and vertical typical lengths are different. This surface anisotropy results from gravity, but how does gravity influence the magnetic field? To answer this question, a scenario has been proposed in two recent publications, based on anisotropic Debye shielding. The presentation reported in this paper was devoted to investigate the possibility and causes of a non-zero div $\vec{B}$. A scaling law associated with the anisotropy is able to reestablish the nullity of div $\vec{B}$, which would lead to a renewed MHD in the solar photosphere layer. An eventual observation in the laboratory is also reported.

While a broad line of the Fe Kα emission is commonly found in the X-ray spectra of typical Seyfert galaxies, the situation is unclear in the case of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s)—an extreme subset which are generally thought to harbor less massive black holes with higher accretion rates. We report results of our study of the assemble property of the Fe K line in NLS1s by stacking the X-ray spectra of a large sample of 51 NLS1s observed with XMM-Newton. We find in the stacked X-ray spectra a prominent, broad emission feature over 4–7 keV, which is characteristic of the broad Fe Kα line. Our results suggest that a relativistic broad Fe line may in fact be common in NLS1s. The line profile is used to study the average spin of the black holes in the sample. We find, for the first time, that their black holes are constrained to be likely spinning at averagely low or moderate rates as a population. The implications of the results are discussed in the context of the black hole growth in NLS1 galaxies.

Ever since the pioneering work of Schmidt a half-century ago there has been great interest in finding an appropriate empirical relation that would directly link some property of interstellar gas with the process of star formation within it. Schmidt conjectured that this might take the form of a power-law relation between the rate of star formation (SFR) and the surface density of interstellar gas. However recent observations suggest that a linear scaling relation between the total SFR and the amount of dense gas within molecular clouds appears to be the underlying physical relation that most directly connects star formation with interstellar gas from scales of individual GMCs to those encompassing entire galaxies both near and far. Although Schmidt relations are found to exist within local GMCs, there is no Schmidt relation observed between GMCs. The implications of these results for interpreting and understanding the Kennicutt-Schmidt scaling law for galaxies are discussed.

A range of Bayesian tools has become widely used in cosmological data treatment and parameter inference (see Kunz et al.2007, Trotta 2008, Amendola et al.2013). With increasingly big datasets and higher precision, tools that enable us to further enhance the accuracy of our measurements gain importance. Here we present an approach based on internal robustness, introduced in Amendola et al. (2013) and adopted in Heneka et al. (2014), to identify biased subsets of data and hidden correlation in a model independent way.

We present indirect constraints on the stellar initial-mass-function (IMF) in nine massive elliptical galaxies with σ ≈ 300 km/s, via a comparison of dynamical and stellar-population based stellar masses. We use adaptive-optics assisted, high resolution kinematical data from the SINFONI Search for Supermassive Black Holes that allow us to constrain the dynamical stellar mass-to-light ratio in the very centre of each galaxy. Hence we measure the IMF in a galaxy region where the stellar mass dominates over dark matter, minimising any potential degeneracy between the two mass components. In six of our galaxies – those which have depleted stellar cores – we find an IMF consistent with the one measured in the Milky-Way via direct star counts. The three remaining, power-law galaxies have instead stellar masses about a factor of two times larger than expected from a Milky-Way type IMF, indicating either a more bottom-heavy IMF (like, e.g., the Salpeter IMF) or a dark-matter distribution that is degenerate with the stellar mass down to the very centres of these galaxies. The bottom-light IMF in our core galaxies is surprising in view of previous studies that suggested a systematic IMF variation where early-type galaxies with σ ≈ 300 km/s have a Salpeter or even more dwarf-dominated IMF. Core galaxies are particularly important since their unique central orbital structure offers an independent crosscheck for the dynamical models. Our models with a bottom-light IMF are consistent with the distribution of orbits predicted by SMBH-binary core-formation models. This indicates that spatially well resolved central kinematical data are important for determining unbiased dynamical stellar mass-to-light ratios. Our results imply either that the IMF in massive galaxies varies over a wider range than previously anticipated, and is not the same in core and power-law ellipticals, or else that there are systematic variations in the distribution of dark matter among massive early-type galaxies.

We present an analysis of the parsec-scale jet structure of the quasar 4C+21.35 with a resolution of 0.1 milliarcseconds based on 63 epochs of Very Long Baseline Array observations at 43 GHz from 2007 June to 2014 May along with the Fermi LAT γ-ray light curve and multi-frequency optical photometric and polarimetric data. We find that the innermost jet of the quasar consists of a very compact core of size ~0.03 mas, as well as feature A1 located 0.16 ± 0.03 mas from the core. The distance of A1 remains fairly stable, but its position angle with respect to the core changes from -10 to +10 deg. We detect 4 superluminal knots in the inner jet with apparent speeds ranging from 10c to 20c. The first two components appeared in the jet during the high γ-ray state of the quasar from mid-2010 to early 2011, while the fourth knot appears to be connected with the γ-ray active state in late 2013 - early 2014. The first knot can be associated with the dramatic VHE flare in 2010 June and possesses an extreme Doppler factor ~60. We find that maxima in the γ-ray light curve coincide with epochs of interaction between the moving knots and the core and feature A1. This suggests that the core and A1 are recollimation shocks where γ-ray flares occur. The Chandra 0.5-6 keV image reveals the existence of X-ray emission in the kiloparsec scale jet of the quasar that can be explained via inverse Compton scattering off the cosmic microwave background by relativistic electrons if no deceleration occurs between the parsec- and kiloparsec-scale jets.

Rotationally fissioned asteroids produce unbound asteroid pairs that have very similar heliocentric orbits. Backward integration of their current heliocentric orbits provides an age of closest proximity that can be used to date the rotational fission event. Most asteroid pairs follow a predicted theoretical relationship between the primary spin period and the mass ratio of the two pair members that is a direct consequence of the YORP-induced rotational fission hypothesis. If the progenitor asteroid has strength, asteroid pairs may have higher mass ratios or faster rotating primaries. However, the process of secondary fission leaves the originally predicted trend unaltered. We also describe the characteristics of pair members produced by four alternative routes from a rotational fission event to an asteroid pair. Unlike direct formation from the event itself, the age of closest proximity of these pairs cannot generally be used to date the rotational fission event since considerable time may have passed.

Recent studies have claimed the existence of very massive stars (VMS) up to 300 M⊙ in the local Universe. As this finding may represent a paradigm shift for the canonical stellar upper-mass limit of 150 M⊙, it is timely to discuss the status of the data, as well as the far-reaching implications of such objects. We held a Joint Discussion at the General Assembly in Beijing to discuss (i) the determination of the current masses of the most massive stars, (ii) the formation of VMS, (iii) their mass loss, and (iv) their evolution and final fate. The prime aim was to reach broad consensus between observers and theorists on how to identify and quantify the dominant physical processes.

With the recent accelerating rate of discoveries in the field of nearby young stars, the ability to identify new nearby young stars is as important as ever, and membership identification codes will continue to perform a vital role in scientific research. In the process of creating a new moving group membership identification code - LocAting Constituent mEmbers In Nearby Groups (LACEwING): we have compiled a few pointers relevant to astronomers trying to use codes like LACEwING to locate young stars.

This report outlines IAU business conducted by or through the Executive Committee in the triennium between the Rio de Janeiro General Assembly, 3-14 August 2009, and the Beijing General Assembly, 20-31 August 2012.

NOAA 11035 was a highly sheared active region that appeared in December 2009 early in the new activity cycle. The leading polarity sunspot developed a highly unusual feature in its penumbra, an opposite polarity pore with a strong magnetic field in excess of 3500 G along one edge, which persisted for several days during the evolution of the region. This region was well observed by both space- and ground-based observatories, including Hinode, FIRS, TRACE, and SOHO. These observations, which span wavelength and atmospheric regimes, provide a complete picture of this unusual feature which may constitute a force-free magnetic field in the photosphere which is produced by the reconnection of magnetic loops low in the solar atmosphere.
