The radio sky is full of transients, their time-scales ranging from nanoseconds to decades. Recent developments in technology sensitivity and computing capabilities have opened up the short end of that range, and are revealing a plethora of new phenomenologies. Studies of radio transients were previously restricted to analyses of archived data, but are now including real-time analyses. We focus here on Fast Radio Bursts, discuss and compare the properties of the population, and describe what is to date the only known repeating Fast Radio Burst and its host galaxy. We also review what will be possible with the new instrumentation coming online.

Star formation is spatially clustered across a range of environments, from dense stellar clusters to unbound associations. As a result, radiative or dynamical interactions with neighbouring stars disrupt (proto)planetary systems and limit their radii, leaving a lasting impact on their potential habitability. In the solar neighbourhood, we find that the vast majority of stars form in unbound associations, such that the interaction of (proto)planetary systems with neighbouring stars is limited to the densest sub-regions. However, the fraction of star formation occurring in compact clusters was considerably higher in the past, peaking at ∼50% in the young Milky Way at redshift z ∼ 2. These results demonstrate that the large-scale star formation environment affects the demographics of planetary systems and the occupation of the habitable zone. We show that planet formation is governed by multi-scale physics, in which Mpc-scale events such as galaxy mergers affect the AU-scale properties of (proto)planetary systems.

Because the number of asteroids in the IMB with absolute magnitude H<16.5 is effectively complete, the distributions of the sizes and the orbital elements of these asteroids must be devoid of observational selection effects. This allows us to state that the observed size-frequency distributions (SFDs) of the five major asteroid families in the IMB, defined by Nesvorný (2015) using the Hierarchical Clustering Method (Zappala et al. 1990), are distinctly different and deviate significantly from the linear log-log relation described by Dohnanyi (1969). The existence of these differences in the SFDs, and the fact that the precursor bodies of the major families have distinctly different eccentricities and inclinations, provides a simple explanation for the observations that the mean sizes of the family asteroids, taken as a whole, are correlated with their mean proper eccentricities and anti-correlated with their mean proper inclinations. While the latter observations do have a simple explanation, we observe that the mean sizes of the non-family asteroids in the IMB are also correlated with their mean proper eccentricities and anti-correlated with their mean proper inclinations. We deduce from this, and from the fact that the SFDs of the non-family and the family asteroids (again taken as a whole) are almost identical, that the family and most of the non-family and asteroids have a common origin. We estimate that ~85% of all the asteroids in the IMB with H<16.5 originate from the Flora, Vesta, Nysa, Polana and Eulalia families with the remaining ~15% originating from either the same families or, more likely, a few ghost families (Dermott et al. 2018).

Eta Carinae is the most massive active binary within 10,000 light-years. While famous for the largest non-terminal stellar explosion ever recorded, observations reveal a supermassive (∼120 M⊙) binary consisting of an LBV and either a WR or extreme O star in a very eccentric orbit (e=0.9) with a 5.54-year period. Dramatic changes across multiple wavelengths are routinely observed as the stars move about in their highly elliptical orbits, especially around periastron when the hot (∼40 kK) companion star delves deep into the denser and much cooler (∼15 kK) extended wind photosphere of the LBV primary. Many of these changes are due to a dynamic wind-wind collision region (WWCR) that forms between the stars, plus expanding radiation-illuminated fossil WWCRs formed one, two, and three 5.54-year orbital cycles ago. These fossil WWCRs have been spatially and spectrally resolved by the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) at multiple epochs, resulting in data cubes that spatially map Eta Carinae’s innermost WWCRs and follow temporal changes in several forbidden emission lines (e.g. [Fe iii] 4659 Å, [Fe ii] 4815 Å) across the 5.54-year cycle. We present initial results of 3D time-dependent hydrodynamical and radiative-transfer simulations of the Eta Carinae binary and its WWCRs with the goal of producing synthetic data cubes of forbidden emission lines for comparison to the available HST/STIS observations. Comparison of the theoretical models to the observations reveals important details about the binary’s orbital motion, photoionization properties, and recent (5–15year) mass loss history. Such an analysis also provides a baseline for following future changes in Eta Carinae, essential for understanding the late-stage evolution of a nearby supernova progenitor. Our modeling methods can also be adapted to a number of other colliding wind binary systems (e.g. WR 140) that are scheduled to be studied with future observatories (e.g. the James Webb Space Telescope).

We have derived absolute proper motions of stars in the Galactic bulge region combining the VVV InfraRed Astrometric Catalogue (VIRAC) and Gaia. We use the proper motions to study the kinematic structure of the bulge both integrated along the line-of-sight and in magnitude intervals using red clump stars as standard candles. In parallel we compare to a made-to-measure barred dynamical model, folding in the VIRAC selection function, to understand and interpret the structures that we observe. The barred dynamical model, which contains a boxy/peanut bulge, and has a pattern speed of 37.5 kms−1 kpc−1, is able to reproduce all structures impressively well.

We present 21 cm (L-band) JVLA observations of the Perseus Cluster, comprising data from all four array configurations. The resulting images are nearly an order of magnitude deeper than any other image made of NGC 1275 and its environs at this frequency.

Explosive stellar transients arise from diverse situations, including deaths of massive stars, a variety of thermonuclear outbursts, and compact-object mergers. Stellar interactions are heavily implicated in explaining the observed populations of events, and not only those where binarity is obviously involved. Relationships between these classes probably help to elucidate our understanding; for example; the production of double neutron-star mergers from field binaries is thought to be heavily biased towards routes involving stripped core-collapse supernovæ. As we gain an ever more synoptic view of the changing sky, theorists should be mindful of developing an ability to take robust quantitative advantage of the available population information to help constrain the physics. This is complementary to aiming for deep understanding of individual events.

The Magellanic Clouds are nearby dwarf irregular galaxies that represent a unique laboratory for studying galaxy interactions. Their morphology and dynamics have been heavily influenced by their mutual interactions as well as with their interaction(s) with the Milky Way. We use the VISTA near-infrared YJKs survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC) in combination with stellar partial models of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and the Milky Way to investigate the spatial distribution of stellar populations of different ages across the Magellanic Clouds. In this contribution, we present the results of these studies that allow us to trace substructures possibly related to the interaction history of the Magellanic Clouds.

Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2; April 25, 2018) provides astrometric and photometric data for more than a billion stars - among them many AGB stars. As part of DR2 the light curves of several hundreds of thousand variable stars, including many long-period variable (LPV) candidates, are made available. The publication of the light curves and LPV-specific attributes in addition to the standard DR2 products offers a unique opportunity to study AGB stars. In this contribution, we present the first results for AGB stars based on the analysis of the Gaia data performed after their release. As an immediate result of the Gaia DR2 LPV database we introduce a new photometric index capable of efficiently distinguishing AGB stars of different masses and chemical properties.

We summarize the results from a study of the globular cluster (GC) system of the isolated elliptical galaxy NGC 6411, based on Gemini/GMOS g', r', i’ photometry. The extent of the globular cluster system is about 70 kpc. It contains ≍700 members. The colour distribution and luminosity function are typical of old GC systems. An excess of bright GCs with intermediate colours might evidence an intermediate-age merger.

Low-mass stars form from the gravitational collapse of dense molecular cloud cores. While a general consensus picture of this collapse process has emerged, many details on how mass is transferred from cores to stars remain poorly understood. MASSES (Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA), an SMA large project, has just finished surveying all 74 Class 0 and Class I protostars in the nearby Perseus molecular cloud to reveal the interplay between fragmentation, angular momentum, and outflows in regulating accretion and setting the final masses of stars. Scientific highlights are presented in this proceedings, covering the topics of episodic accretion, hierarchical thermal Jeans fragmentation, angular momentum transfer, envelope grain sizes, and disk evolution.

A search for asteroid families among the Hildas and Jupiter Trojans was performed with the use of a new set of proper elements. The proper elements were calculated by the empirical method. Besides well known families, several new probable families were found in addition.

Amongst the dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, the isolated irregular one, IC 10 is one of the most interesting galaxies, with strong star forming activity and the highest density of Wolf-Rayet stars. Undergoing a starburst phase, having numerous HII regions and being bright in all wavebands, makes it an exquisite galaxy to study the internal and external processes that continue to affect dwarf galaxies 14 Gyr since the Big Bang. In this study, we present a new deep and precise optical monitoring survey of IC 10 using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) with the wide field camera (WFC). We performed observations at nine epochs spaced between three to four months apart between 2015 and 2017. We identified Long Period Variable stars (LPVs), Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (AGBs) and Red Super Giant stars (RSGs) to determine the star formation history and chemical evolution of IC 10.

In the efforts to map the Milky Way structure, the central regions have remained very difficult to probe. The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea Survey (VVV) is a near-IR variability Survey that scans 560 sq.deg. across the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the southern mid-plane. The main goal of the VVV Survey is to build a 3D map of the structure of the inner Galaxy and characterize its stellar populations. This survey has discovered different kinds of objects, such as globular clusters, Microlensing events, RR Lyrae stars, Cepheids, WITs, among others. The extension of the Survey (VVVX) is observing until 2020, tripling the areal coverage, and complementing the variability studies done by the VVV Survey.

The chemical evolution of the Universe is governed by the nucleosynthesis contribution from stars, which in turn is determined primarily by the initial stellar mass. The heaviest elements are primarily produced through neutron capture nucleosynthesis. Two main neutron capture processes identified are the slow and rapid neutron capture processes (s and r processes, respectively). The sites of the r and s-process are discussed, along with recent progress and their associated uncertainties. This review is mostly focused on the s-process which occurs in low and intermediate-mass stars which have masses up to about 8 solar masses (M⊙). We also discuss the intermediate-neutron capture process (or i-process), which may occur in AGB stars, accreting white dwarfs, and massive stars. The contribution of the i-process to the chemical evolution of elements in galaxies is as yet uncertain.

As the era of the Square Kilometre Array approaches, astronomers are investigating how to make good use of its facilities for studying radio transients. This talk presented two different methods for radio transient discovery – ‘triggered’ and ‘targeted’ observations – which can be used to supplement the blind survey approach. Both techniques focus on performing radio observations of sky regions in which we expect to find radio transients. ‘Triggered’ observations are obtained by telescopes capable of responding rapidly to transient alerts; they automatically repoint and begin collecting data within minutes of the alert being given. ‘Targeted’ observational techniques involve radio monitoring of specific sources or regions such as nearby, face-on galaxies, globular clusters, and the Galactic Plane. Such observations are sensitive to transient radio jets from black holes accreting at, or above, the Eddington limit, with the additional benefit of providing many potential sources within a single field of view. Both observing strategies illustrate important techniques for radio transient discovery that can be employed by the SKA.

Looking for variable stars in the M31 dwarf spheroidal satellite Andromeda XXV (And XXV), which we have observed with the LBC at the LBT, we serendipitously discovered a clustering of stars (Gep I) of 12 arcsec in diameter, near the center of And XXV. This is one of the very few clusters known to be associated with a dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The half light radius (rh) of Gep I at the distance of And XXV corresponds to 25 pc in linear extension. Radius and absolute V (MV∼ −4.9 mag) magnitude place Gep I in the region of the MV-rh plane that seems to be forbidden to ordinary globular clusters (GCs). The seeing-limited resolution of our photometry could resolve only a few bright stars in Gep I. The CMD of these sources is compatible with an old stellar population placed at a heliocentric distance of ∼750–800 kpc, thus confirming a real concentration of old stars. The ground-based CMD of Gep I is severely incomplete. Future high resolution imaging and spectroscopy of the brightest stars will permit to disentangle the puzzle on the real nature of Gep I.

Many high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) are runaways. Stellar wind and radiation of donor stars in HMXBs along with outflows and jets from accretors interact with the local interstellar medium and produce curious circumstellar structures. Several such structures are presented and discussed in this contribution.

I report observations of 3C84 (NGC 1275), the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster, made with an interferometric array including the orbiting radio telescope of the RadioAstron mission. The data transversely resolve the edge-brightened jet in 3C84 only 0.03 mas from the core, which is ten times closer to the central engine than was possible in previous ground-based observations. To better understand physical properties of this peculiar source, I will discuss its present properties in comparison to the past and more recent evolution in the radio band of 3C 84.

Using abundances from the available largest, homogeneous sample of high resolution Barium (Ba) star spectra we calculated the ratios of different hs-like to ls-like elemental ratios and compared to different AGB nucleosynthesis models. The Ba star data show an incontestable increase of the hs-type/ls-type element ratio (for example, [Ce/Y]) with decreasing metallicity. This trend in the Ba star observations is predicted by low mass, non-rotating AGB models where 13C is the main neutron source and is in agreement with Kepler asteroseismology observations.
