The aims of this study were (i) to consider the information about cows that may be available for use on commercial farms and which may be useful in predicting intake and (ii) to quantify the variation that will exist between cows even when all of the available information has been used. This information is of fundamental importance to the development of rapidly applicable systems for predicting the intake of dairy cows.
