Before the Meiji Restoration, a number of works on this subject circulated in manuscript form, amongst them Ōoka jinseiroku and Ōoka seidan. The Eisensha was a prolific publisher of works of this kind in the early Meiji period: a copy in the Diet Library in Tokyo of Kinko jitsuroku: Enmeiin jikki, which was published in two volumes in 1884 by the Eisensha, contains a list of more than eighty such works already published by the company.
