[The Conference was held in London, February 2-17, 1978. The two rotocols adopted by the Conference appear at I.L.M. pages 546 and 579. he Protocol at page 546 relates to the International onvention for the revention of Pollution from Ships, 1973} the one at page 579 relates to he International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974.

1. An inert gas system (IGS) i s required whenever a tanker uses crude o i l washing.

Between 20,000 and 40,000 DWT, the Administration of a Flag State may grant an exemption to the requirements for IGS if high capacity washing machines ( i . e . , tank washing machines having an individual throughput of greater than 60 cubic meters per hour) are not-fitted and the ship's design characteristics oak* It Impractlcablf to fit IGS.
