We publish in this number a paper by the late Professor William Beare, which was received shortly before his death last summer. Readers who had the good fortune to know him will surely feel that this paper captures something of the style and spirit of the man: a modest, sober, humane, and forthright scholar, ποθεινὸς τοῖς φίλοις.
