„La filiation est directe“ Der Einfluss von Marcel Mauss auf das Werk von Claude Lévi-Strauss

Abstract

The paper argues that Claude Lévi-Strauss’ thought was influenced by Marcel Mauss’ works in a much deeper way than has been remarked in the literature. Far from being restricted to Lévi-Strauss’ seminal 1949 work on The Elementary Structures of Kinship Mauss’ constitutive impact can already be found in Lévi-Strauss’ early ethnographic studies (starting in the mid-1930s). Moreover, it can be shown that decisive theses and arguments of Lévi-Strauss’ later thought – ranging from the anthropology of kinship to classification theory and the specifics of the “savage mind” – are clearly prefigured in these early texts. In the end, the arguments presented here do not only call into question the well-known and widespread portrayal of Lévi-Strauss as a solitary scientist and “born structuralist” but also show how the specific interpretation of Mauss by Lévi-Strauss directed and restricted the further reception of Mauss’ works.

Résumé

On avancera que Claude Levi-Strauss a été beaucoup plus influencé par Marcel Mauss que les commentateurs ne l’ont relevé. Loin de se limiter aux formes élémentaires de la parenté, ouvrage pionnier de 1949, l’empreinte marquante de Mauss est visible dès les premiers écrits ethnographiques de Claude Lévi-Strauss (1935 environ). Plus même on peut voir que les points et les arguments qu’il développera plus tard – anthropologie de la parenté, théorie de la classification, caractéristiques de la pensée sauvage–sont déjà comme préfigurés dans ces textes de jeunesse. Tout cela remet en question le portrait largement reçu de Lévi-Strauss, savage “and” sant should look like the one betwen “tand” and “anthroplolgie” savant solitaire, né structuraliste et montre également à quel point sa lecture particulière a orienté et rétréci la réception ultérieure des œuvres de Mauss.

Zusammenfassung

Ziel des Aufsatzes ist es nachzuweisen, dass Marcel Mauss das Denken von Claude Lévi-Strauss sehr viel stärker beeinflusst hat, als dies bisher in der Literatur festgehalten wurde. Keineswegs ist dieser Einfluss auf Lévi-Strauss’ bahnbrechende Studie über Die elementaren Strukturen der Verwandtschaft aus dem Jahr 1949 begrenzt. Vielmehr lässt sich die konstitutive Bedeutung von Mauss bereits in Lévi-Strauss’ frühen ethnographischen Arbeiten ab Mitte der 1930er Jahre deutlich erkennen. Mehr noch: Zentrale Thesen und Argumente aus Lévi-Strauss’ späteren Arbeiten – von der Verwandtschaftsethnologie über die Klassifikationstheorie bis hin zu den Analysen des „wilden Denkens“ – sind in diesen frühen Arbeiten schon angelegt. Die hier vorgebrachte Argumentation stellt mithin die beliebte und weitverbreitete Darstellung von Lévi-Strauss als wissenschaftlichem Einzelgänger und „geborenem Strukturalisten“ infrage und zeigt darüber hinaus, wie Lévi-Strauss’ spezifische Mauss-Interpretation die weitere Rezeption von Mauss’ Werk gelenkt und eingeschränkt hat.
