Iron Age Rock-Art: A View from Järrestad in South-East Sweden

Abstract

This paper discusses the chronology of the Järrestad rock-art site in south-east Sweden. Drawing on recent developments in ship chronology, it argues that images were produced from the very beginning of the Scandinavian Bronze Age, c. 1700 BC, to the earliest Iron Age, c. 200 BC. The images are not randomly spread, however, but cluster in two phases: c. 1700–1100 BC and c. 900–200 BC, each with its different characteristics. It is argued that the later phase should be viewed against the background of central and western European Hallstatt cultures which affected not only the iconography of the Järrestad panel but also the organization of the surrounding cultural landscape.

Cet article étudie la chronologie du site d'art rupestre de Järrestad, dans le sud-est de la Suède. En s'appuyant sur des développements récents dans la chronologie des bateaux, on démontre que des représentations ont été créées dès le début de l'Âge du Bronze scandinave, autour de 1700 av. J.C., jusqu'au début de l'Âge du Fer, env. 200 av. J.C. Ces représentations ne sont toutefois pas réparties aléatoirement, mais se regroupent en deux phases allant d'env. 1700 à 1100 av. J.C. et d'env. 900 à 200 av. J.C.; avec chaque fois des caractéristiques différentes. On fait valoir que la phase récente doit être considérée par rapport aux civilisations de Hallstatt en Europe centrale et occidentale, qui influençaient non seulement l'iconographie de Järrestad, mais également l'organisation du paysage culturel environnant.

Dieser Beitrag diskutiert die Chronologie des Felskunst-Fundplatzes von Järrestad in Südostschweden. Unter Bezug auf die jüngsten Entwicklungen in der Schiffschronologie wird dargelegt, dass die Darstellungen unmittelbar von Beginn der skandinavischen Bronzezeit um 1700 v. Chr. an bis zur frühesten Eisenzeit um 200 v. Chr. angebracht wurden. Die Bilder laufen allerdings nicht willkürlich durch, sondern sie gruppieren sich in zwei Phasen, ca. 1700–1100 v. Chr. sowie ca. 900–200 v. Chr., wobei beide unterschiedliche Charakteristika aufweisen. Es wird dargelegt, dass die jüngere Phase vor dem Hintergrund der Kulturen des Hallstattkreises in Mittel- und Westeuropa verstanden werden sollte, die nicht nur die Ikonographie von Järrestad, sondern auch die Organisation der umgebenden Kulturlandschaft beeinflusste.
