The concept of prehistory and the invention of the terms ‘prehistoric’ and ‘prehistorian’: the Scandinavian origin, 1833–1850

Abstract

It is usually assumed by historians of archaeology that the ‘concept of prehistory’ and the terms ‘prehistoric’ and ‘prehistorian’ first appeared in Britain and/or France in the mid-nineteenth century. This contribution demonstrates that the Scandinavian equivalent terms forhistorisk and förhistorisk were in use substantially earlier, appearing in print first in 1834. Initial usage by Molbech differed slightly from that of the present day, but within three years the modern usage had been developed. The concept of prehistory was first developed at the same time by C.J. Thomsen, though he did not use the word. It was used more frequently in the nationalism debates of the 1840s, particularly by J.J.A. Worsaae. One of the other protagonists, the Norwegian Peter Andreas Munch, was probably responsible for introducing the concept to Daniel Wilson in 1849, and suggesting that an English equivalent to forhistorisk was required.

Les historiens d'archéologie admettent généralement que le concept de ‘préhistoire’ et les termes ‘préhistorique’ et ‘préhistorien’ sont apparus pour la première fois en France et/ou en Grande-Bretagne vers le milieu du 19e siècle. Cet article montre que les expressions scandinaves équivalentes forhistorik et förhistorisk étaient utilisés déjà beaucoup plus tôt, leur première apparition imprimée datant de 1834. L'usage initial par Molbech différait légèrement de l'usage actuel, mais l'usage moderne se développa au cours de trois ans seulement. Le concept de préhistoire fut développé en même temps par C.J. Thomsen en premier, mais sans qu'il n'emploie le mot. Celui-ci était utilisé plus fréquemment durant les débats nationalistes des années 1840, particulièrement par J.J.A. Worsaae. Für gewöhnlich wird von Archäologiehistorikern angenommen, dass das „Konzept der Vorgeschichte” und die Begriffe „prähistorisch“ und „Prähistoriker” erstmals in Großbritannien und/oder Frankreich in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts auftauchten. Dieser Beitrag zeigt, dass die äquivalenten skandinavischen Begriffe „forhistorisk” und „förhistorisk” wesentlich früher, in gedruckter Form 1834, in Gebrauch waren. Die anfängliche Nutzung dieses Begriffes durch Chr. Molbech wich etwas von der heutigen Bedeutung ab, doch innerhalb von drei Jahren umschrieb er den modernen Inhalt. Das Konzept der Vorgeschichte wurde zur selben Zeit erstmals von C. J. Thomsen entwickelt, wenngleich er nicht diesen Terminus verwendete. Häufiger wurde er in den nationalistischen Debatten der 1840er Jahre genutzt, insbesondere von J. J. A. Worsaae. Einer der anderen Protagonisten, der Norweger P. A. Munch, stellte das Konzept wahrscheinlich 1849 D. Wilson vor und drang darauf, ein englisches Äquivalent für „forhistorisk” zu entwickeln.
