The mathematical theory of Optimal Transport (OT) is now one of the most visible and also most active fields in nonlinear analysis, with two Fieldsmedal winners Cedric Villani and Alessio Figalli among its protagonists. The origins of OT date back to the works of GaspardMonge in the 18th century and those of Leonid Kantorovich in the ’1940s. However, what is considered as the foundations of the modern theory have mostly been established in several ground-breaking works at the end of the 20th century: among the most prominent contributors, there is Yann Brenier, who characterized optimal transport in terms of connections with PDEs and hydrodynamics in the 1980’s; there is RobertMcCann, who introduced the powerful concept of displacement convexity in the 1990’s; there is Felix Otto, who demonstrated the implications of OT to nonlinear evolution equations around the millennium.

The origin of this special issue took place at the 9th European Nonlinear Dynamics Conference (ENOC 2017) in Budapest, Hungary. Specifically, the mini-symposium on Random Dynamical Systems – Recent Advances and New Directions brought together novel perspectives on analyzing stochastic dynamics with applications including biology, structural dynamics, control, energy and mechanics. The expanded use of stochasticity in more realistic models exposes questions related to bifurcations, meta-stability, tipping and early warning signals, multiscale dynamics, and connections between chaos and stochastic dynamics. The observed phenomena in applications drive new methodologies and analyses, needed to understand the interplay between different sources of stochastic effects and nonlinearities, network structure, multi-mode and multi-scale behavior, non-smooth dynamics, energy transfer, and spatio-temporal phenomena. Of course, a single issue cannot hope to cover all of the new topics in stochastic analysis for applications. Nevertheless, we hope that the collection of applications and stochastic models presented in this issue illustrates some of the exciting advances and perspectives relevant for broad classes of stochastic models and demonstrates the need in advancing the theory of stochastic processes.

In the field of Life Sciences, it is very common to deal with extremely complex systems, from both analytical and computational points of view, due to the unavoidable coupling of different interacting structures. As an example, angiogenesis has revealed to be an highly complex, and extremely interesting biomedical problem, due to the strong coupling between the kinetic parameters of the relevant branching – growth – anastomosis stochastic processes of the capillary network, at the microscale, and the family of interacting underlying biochemical fields, at the macroscale. In this paper, an original revisited conceptual stochastic model of tumour-driven angiogenesis has been proposed, for which it has been shown that it is possible to reduce complexity by taking advantage of the intrinsic multiscale structure of the system; one may keep the stochasticity of the dynamics of the vessel tips at their natural microscale, whereas the dynamics of the underlying fields is given by a deterministic mean field approximation obtained by an averaging at a suitable mesoscale. While in previous papers, only an heuristic justification of this approach had been offered; in this paper, a rigorous proof is given of the so called ‘propagation of chaos’, which leads to a mean field approximation of the stochastic relevant measures associated with the vessel dynamics, and consequently of the underlying tumour angiogenic factor (TAF) field. As a side, though important result, the non-extinction of the random process of tips has been proven during any finite time interval.

Increasing evidence suggests that the presence of mobile ions in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can cause a current–voltage curve hysteresis. Steady state and transient current–voltage characteristics of a planar metal halide CH3NH3PbI3 PSC are analysed with a drift-diffusion model that accounts for both charge transport and ion vacancy motion. The high ion vacancy density within the perovskite layer gives rise to narrow Debye layers (typical width ~2 nm), adjacent to the interfaces with the transport layers, over which large drops in the electric potential occur and in which significant charge is stored. Large disparities between (I) the width of the Debye layers and that of the perovskite layer (~600 nm) and (II) the ion vacancy density and the charge carrier densities motivate an asymptotic approach to solving the model, while the stiffness of the equations renders standard solution methods unreliable. We derive a simplified surface polarisation model in which the slow ion dynamics are replaced by interfacial (non-linear) capacitances at the perovskite interfaces. Favourable comparison is made between the results of the asymptotic approach and numerical solutions for a realistic cell over a wide range of operating conditions of practical interest.

In this paper, we extend and complement previous works about propagation in kinetic reaction–transport equations. The model we study describes particles moving according to a velocity-jump process, and proliferating according to a reaction term of monostable type. We focus on the case of bounded velocities, having dimension higher than one. We extend previous results obtained by the first author with Calvez and Nadin in dimension one. We study the large time/large-scale hyperbolic limit via an Hamilton–Jacobi framework together with the half-relaxed limits method. We deduce spreading results and the existence of travelling wave solutions. A crucial difference with the mono-dimensional case is the resolution of the spectral problem at the edge of the front, that yields potential singular velocity distributions. As a consequence, the minimal speed of propagation may not be determined by a first-order condition.

This paper concerns the reflection of high-frequency, monochromatic linear waves of wavenumber k(≫ 1) from smooth boundaries which are O(k−1/2) perturbations away from either a specified near-planar boundary or else from a given smooth, two-dimensional curve of general O(1) curvature. For each class of perturbed boundary, we will consider separately plane and cylindrical wave incidence, with general amplitude profiles of each type of incident field. This interfacial perturbation scaling is canonical in the sense that a ray approach requires a modification to the standard WKBJ ‘ray ansatz’ which, in turn, leads to a leading-order amplitude (or ‘transport’) equation which includes an extra term absent in a standard application of the geometrical theory of diffraction. This extra term is unique to this scaling, and the afore-mentioned modification that is required is an application of a generalised type of ray expansion first posed by F. G. Friedlander and J. B. Keller (1955 Commun. Pure Appl. Math.6, 387–394).

We consider a non-stationary incompressible non-Newtonian Stokes system in a porous medium with characteristic size of the pores ϵ and containing a thin fissure of width ηϵ. The viscosity is supposed to obey the power law with flow index $\frac{5}{3}\leq q\leq 2$. The limit when size of the pores tends to zero gives the homogenized behaviour of the flow. We obtain three different models depending on the magnitude ηϵ with respect to ϵ: if ηϵ ≪ $\varepsilon^{q\over 2q-1}$ the homogenized fluid flow is governed by a time-dependent non-linear Darcy law, while if ηϵ ≫ $\varepsilon^{q\over 2q-1}$ is governed by a time-dependent non-linear Reynolds problem. In the critical case, ηϵ ≈ $\varepsilon^{q\over 2q-1}$, the flow is described by a time-dependent non-linear Darcy law coupled with a time-dependent non-linear Reynolds problem.

Metastable transitions in Langevin dynamics can exhibit rich behaviours that are markedly different from its overdamped limit. In addition to local alterations of the transition path geometry, more fundamental global changes may exist. For instance, when the dissipation is weak, heteroclinic connections that exist in the overdamped limit do not necessarily have a counterpart in the Langevin system, potentially leading to different transition rates. Furthermore, when the friction coefficient depends on the velocity, the overdamped limit no longer exists, but it is still possible to efficiently find instantons. The approach, we employed for these discoveries, was based on (i) a simple rewriting of the Freidlin–Wentzell action in terms of time-reversed dynamics and (ii) an adaptation of the string method, which was originally designed for gradient systems, to this specific non-gradient system.

Suspended fibres significantly alter fluid rheology, as exhibited in for example solutions of DNA, RNA and synthetic biological nanofibres. It is of interest to determine how this altered rheology affects flow stability. Motivated by the fact thermal gradients may occur in biomolecular analytic devices, and recent stability results, we examine the problem of Rayleigh–Bénard convection of the transversely isotropic fluid of Ericksen. A transversely isotropic fluid treats these suspensions as a continuum with an evolving preferred direction, through a modified stress tensor incorporating four viscosity-like parameters. We consider the linear stability of a stationary, passive, transversely isotropic fluid contained between two parallel boundaries, with the lower boundary at a higher temperature than the upper. To determine the marginal stability curves the Chebyshev collocation method is applied, and we consider a range of initially uniform preferred directions, from horizontal to vertical, and three orders of magnitude in the viscosity-like anisotropic parameters. Determining the critical wave and Rayleigh numbers, we find that transversely isotropic effects delay the onset of instability; this effect is felt most strongly through the incorporation of the anisotropic shear viscosity, although the anisotropic extensional viscosity also contributes. Our analysis confirms the importance of anisotropic rheology in the setting of convection.

We present an adaptation of the Monge–Ampère (MA) lattice basis reduction scheme to the MA equation with second boundary value condition, provided the target is a convex set. This yields a fast adaptive method to numerically solve the optimal transport (OT) problem between two absolutely continuous measures, the second of which has convex support. The proposed numerical method actually captures a specific Brenier solution which is minimal in some sense. We prove the convergence of the method as the grid step size vanishes and show with numerical experiments that it is able to reproduce subtle properties of the OT problem.

Building on work of Prandtl and Alexander, we study logarithmic vortex spiral solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. We consider multi-branched spirals that are not symmetric, including mixtures of sheets and continuum vorticity. We find that non-trivial solutions allow only sheets, that there is a large variety of such solutions, but that only the Alexander spirals with three or more symmetric branches appear to yield convergent Biot–Savart integral.

We propose unbalanced versions of the quantum mechanical version of optimal mass transport that is based on the Lindblad equation describing open quantum systems. One of them is a natural interpolation framework between matrices and matrix-valued measures via a quantum mechanical formulation of Fisher-Rao information and the matricial Wasserstein distance, and the second is an interpolation between Wasserstein distance and Frobenius norm. We also give analogous results for the matrix-valued density measures, i.e., we add a spatial dependency on the density matrices. This might extend the applications of the framework to interpolating matrix-valued densities/images with unequal masses.

We consider slow–fast delayed systems and discuss pulsating periodic solutions, which are characterised by specific properties that (a) the period of the periodic solution is close to the delay, and (b) these solutions are formed close to a bifurcation threshold. Such solutions were previously found in models of mode-locked lasers. Through a case study of population models, this work demonstrates the existence of similar solutions for a rather wide class of delayed systems. The periodic dynamics originates from the Hopf bifurcation on the positive equilibrium. We show that the continuous transformation of the periodic orbit to the pulsating regime is simultaneous with multiple secondary almost resonant Hopf bifurcations, which the equilibrium undergoes over a short interval of parameter values. We derive asymptotic approximations for the pulsating periodic solution and consider scaling of the solution and its period with the small parameter that measures the ratio of the time scales. The role of competition for the realisation of the bifurcation scenario is highlighted.

We study a competition-diffusion model while performing simultaneous homogenization and strong competition limits. The limit problem is shown to be a Stefan-type evolution equation with effective coefficients. We also perform some numerical simulations in one and two spatial dimensions that suggest that oscillations in motilities are detrimental to invasion behaviour of a species.

During the 125th European Study Group with Industry held in Limassol, Cyprus, 5–9 December 2016, one of the participating companies, Engino.net Ltd, posed a very interesting challenge to the members of the study group. Engino.net Ltd is a Cypriot company, founded in 2004, that produces a series of toy sets – the Engino® toy sets – consisting of a number of building blocks, which can be assembled by pupils to compose toy models. Depending on the contents of a particular toy set, the company has developed a number of models that can be built utilizing the blocks present in the set; however, the production of a step-by-step assembly manual for each model could only be done manually. The goal of the challenge posed by the company was to implement a procedure to automatically generate the assembly instructions for a given toy. In the present paper, we propose a graph-theoretic approach to model the problem and provide a series of results to solve it by employing modified versions of well-established algorithms in graph theory. An algorithmic procedure to obtain a hierarchical, physically feasible decomposition of a given toy model, from which a series of step-by-step assembly instructions can be recovered, is proposed.

The multifrequency electrical impedance tomography consists in retrieving the conductivity distribution of a sample by injecting a finite number of currents with multiple frequencies. In this paper, we consider the case where the conductivity distribution is piecewise constant, takes a constant value outside a single smooth anomaly, and a frequency dependent function inside the anomaly itself. Using an original spectral decomposition of the solution of the forward conductivity problem in terms of Poincaré variational eigenelements, we retrieve the Cauchy data corresponding to the extreme case of a perfect conductor, and the conductivity profile. We then reconstruct the anomaly from the Cauchy data. The numerical experiments are conducted using gradient descent optimization algorithms.

This article introduces a new notion of optimal transport (OT) between tensor fields, which are measures whose values are positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices. This “quantum” formulation of optimal transport (Q-OT) corresponds to a relaxed version of the classical Kantorovich transport problem, where the fidelity between the input PSD-valued measures is captured using the geometry of the Von-Neumann quantum entropy. We propose a quantum-entropic regularization of the resulting convex optimization problem, which can be solved efficiently using an iterative scaling algorithm. This method is a generalization of the celebrated Sinkhorn algorithm to the quantum setting of PSD matrices. We extend this formulation and the quantum Sinkhorn algorithm to compute barycentres within a collection of input tensor fields. We illustrate the usefulness of the proposed approach on applications to procedural noise generation, anisotropic meshing, diffusion tensor imaging and spectral texture synthesis.

Critical transitions (or tipping points) are drastic sudden changes observed in many dynamical systems. Large classes of critical transitions are associated with systems, which drift slowly towards a bifurcation point. In the context of stochastic ordinary differential equations, there are results on growth of variance and autocorrelation before a transition, which can be used as possible warning signs in applications. A similar theory has recently been developed in the simplest setting for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) for self-adjoint operators in the drift term. This setting leads to real discrete spectrum and growth of the covariance operator via a certain scaling law. In this paper, we develop this theory substantially further. We cover the cases of complex eigenvalues, degenerate eigenvalues as well as continuous spectrum. This provides a fairly comprehensive theory for most practical applications of warning signs for SPDE bifurcations.

This paper is concerned with the stability issue in determining absorption and diffusion coefficients in photoacoustic imaging. Assuming that the medium is layered and the acoustic wave speed is known, we derive global Hölder stability estimates of the photoacoustic inversion. These results show that the reconstruction is stable in the region close to the optical illumination source, and deteriorate exponentially far away. Several experimental pointed out that the resolution depth of the photoacoustic modality is about tens of millimeters. Our stability estimates confirm these observations and give a rigorous quantification of this depth resolution.

The displacement λ-convexity of a non-standard entropy with respect to a non-local transportation metric in finite state spaces is shown using a gradient flow approach. The constant λ is computed explicitly in terms of a priori estimates of the solution to a finite-difference approximation of a non-linear Fokker–Planck equation. The key idea is to employ a new mean function, which defines the Onsager operator in the gradient flow formulation.
