An interesting class of matrices is shown to have the property that the spectrum of each of its elements is invariant under multiplication by p-th. roots of unity. For this class and for a class of Hamiltonian matrices improved spectral variation bounds are obtained.

In this paper we study the fixed point algebra of the automorphism of the rotation algebra , θ = p/q with p, q coprime positive integers, given by u → v-1, v → u. We give a general characterization of the fixed point algebra, determine its K-theory and consider the related crossed-product algebra ⋊Ƭ Z4.

In this paper, we develop a new approach to obtain the compactness of the fluctuation processes for Boltzmann dynamics. Our method is applicable to Kac's model, already studied by Uchiyama, but it covers many other cases. A novelty worth mentioning is the use of the weak topology of a Hilbert space.

We study the characterization of measures μ on X+ = X x R+ such that the inequality , where q < p, holds for the maximal operator Hvf studied by Hörmander. The solution utilizes the concept of the “balayée” of the measure μ.

Let G′ be a quasi–split reductive group over a local field F, ƒ′ the characteristic function of a maximal compact subgroup K′ of G′, N′ a maximal unipotent subgroup of G′. We consider the orbits of maximal dimension for the action of N′ × N′ on G′ and the weighted orbital integral of f′ on such an orbit, the weight being a generic character. The resulting integral, we call a Kloosterman integral. A relative version of this construction is to consider a symmetric space S associated to a quasi-split group G, a maximal unipotent subgroup N of G, a maximal compact K of G and the orbits of maximal dimension for the action of N on S. The weighted orbital integral of the characteristic function f of K ∩ S on such an orbit is what we call a relative Kloosterman integral; the weight is an appropriate character of N. We conjecture that a relative Kloosterman integral is actually a Kloosterman integral for an appropriate group G′. We prove the conjecture in a simple case: E is an unramified quadratic extension of F,G is GL(3, E), S is the set of 3 × 3 matrices s such that the group G′ is then the quasi-split unitary group in three variables.

We consider the number of spaces, up to rational homotopy equivalence, which have rational cohomology algebra isomorphic to that of stunted complex projective space . Using a classification theory due to Schlessinger and Stasheff, we determine the number of rational homotopy types with rational comology algebra isomorphic to , for any given n and k. The necessary computations make use of a spectral sequence introduced by the second named author.

The results obtained extend Madden’s result for Dedekind domains to more general types of 1-dimensional Noetherian rings. In particular, these results apply to piecewise polynomial functions t:C → R where R is a real closed field and C ⊆ Rn is a closed 1-dimensional semi-algebraic set, and also to the associated “relative” case where t, C are defined over some subfield K ⊆ R.

Let G be a graph embedded in a closed surface. The embedding is “locally planar” if for each face, a “large” neighbourhood of this face is simply connected. This notion is formalized, following [RV], by introducing the width ρ(ψ) of the embedding ψ. It is shown that embeddings with ρ(ψ) ≥ 3 behave very much like the embeddings of planar graphs in the 2-sphere. Another notion, “combinatorial local planarity”, is introduced. The criterion is independent of embeddings of the graph, but it guarantees that a given cycle in a graph G must be contractible in any minimal genus embedding of G (either orientable, or non-orientable). It generalizes the width introduced before. As application, short proofs of some important recently discovered results about embeddings of graphs are given and generalized or improved. Uniqueness and switching equivalence of graphs embedded in a fixed surface are also considered.

Let A be a (k + 1) × (k + 1) nonzero matrix. For polynomials p ∈ Pn, set and . Let E ⊂ C be a compact set that does not separate the plane and f be a function continuous on E and analytic in the interior of E. Set and . Our goal is to study approximation to f on E by polynomials from Bn(A). We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the matrix A for the convergence En(A,f) → 0 to take place. These results depend on whether zero lies inside, on the boundary or outside E and yield generalizations of theorems of Clunie, Hasson and Saff for approximation by polynomials that omit a power of z. Let be such that . We also study the asymptotic behavior of the zeros of and the asymptotic relation between En(f) and En(A,f).

Using ideas of McShane ([4, Example 3]), a detailed development of the Riemann integral in a locally compact Hausdorff space X was presented in [1]. There the Riemann integral is derived from a finitely additive volume v defined on a suitable semiring of subsets of X. Vis-à-vis the Riesz representation theorem ([8, Theorem 2.141), the integral generates a Riesz measure v in X, whose relationship to the volume v was carefully investigated in [1, Section 7].

In the present paper, we use the same setting as in [1] but produce the measure directly without introducing the Riemann integral. Specifically, we define an outer measure by means of gages and introduce a very intuitive concept of gage measurability that is different from the usual Carathéodory définition. We prove that if the outer measure is σ-finite, the resulting measure space is identical to that defined by means of the Carathéodory technique, and consequently to that of [1, Section 7]. If the outer measure is not σ-finite, we investigate the gage measurability of Carathéodory measurable sets that are σ-finite. Somewhat surprisingly, it turns out that this depends on the axioms of set theory.

We study a class of generalized hypergeometric functions in several variables introduced by A. Korânyi. It is shown that the generalized Gaussian hypergeometric function is the unique solution of a system partial differential equations. Analogues of some classical results such as Kummer relations and Euler integral representations are established. Asymptotic behavior of generalized hypergeometric functions is obtained which includes some known estimates.
