Cette note a pour principal objet de répondre à deux questions posées par G. Birkhoff.

Théorème 1. Les lattices distributives avec O et I sont exactement les systèmes algébriques avec une opération ternaire (a, b, c) et des éléments O et I tels que:

(1.1) (O, a, I) = a,

(1.2) (a, b, a) = a,

(1.3) (d, (a, b, c), e) = (b, (c, d, e), (a, d, e)).
