EFFECTIVENESS AND PERSISTENCE OF THE GRANULOSIS VIRUS OF THE CODLING MOTH CYDIA POMONELLA (L.) (LEPIDOPTERA: OLETHREUTIDAE) ON APPLE

Abstract

Application of granulosis virus (CPGV) to plots of apple trees reduced deep-entry damage to apples by the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), compared with nontreated apples. However, shallow-entry damage to apples by codling moth was as great, or greater, in virus-treated plots than in nontreated plots. Protection was improved by applying CPGV at least three times during each of the two annual generations of the codling moth compared with less frequent application.

Bioassays showed that activity of deposits of CPGV on apples in the field was reduced to approximately 50% of original activity within 2 days after application and to 17% by the 10th day.

Résumé

L’application du virus de la granulose (CPGV) à des parcelles de pommiers a réduit les dégâts de pénétration en profondeur causés par la carpocapse de la pomme, Cydia pomonella (L.), par comparaison avec des pommes témoins. Mais les dégâts superficiels causés par les ravageurs sont tout aussi importants, sinon plus, dans les parcelles traitées au virus que dans les parcelles témoins. L’application du CPGV au moins trois fois pendant chacune des deux générations annuelles du ravageur améliore la protection des pommes comparativement à une application moins fréquente.

Des essais biologiques ont révélé que l’activité de dépôts du CPGV sur les pommes en plein champ était réduite à environ 50% de l’activité originale dans les 2 jours suivant l’application, et à 17% le 10e jour.
