Cet essai est la suite et le résultat de mes expériences de terrain dans un des lieux saints de l'anthropologie, les îles Trobriand, et de ma découverte, quasi accidentelle, de l'importance des femmes dans cette société. L'étude des relations entre hommes et femmes m'a conduit à réviser plusieurs des postulats fondamentaux formulés initialement par Malinovski sur la société des Trobriand. Il en est résulté plus qu'une réévaluation de l'ethnographie de cette région. Dans des conditions historiques uniques, Malinovski avait fourni l'assise ethnographique de positions théoriques importantes sur la filiation, la parenté, la famille, l'échange et la pensée « primitive ». Mais certaines prémisses de la littérature anthropologique, dont la légitimation ethnographique était fondée sur le matériel trobriandais de Malinovski, me parurent de moins en moins satisfaisantes quand il me fallut passer de la description empirique à des hypothèses plus abstraites. Le travail d'élaboration théorique faisait surgir des problèmes qui non seulement impliquaient le domaine des femmes, mais mettaient en question la formulation théorique du rôle des hommes.

Summary

In this essay, I demonstrate that specifie kinds of material objects used as currency and as the markers of social relations, gain their ultimate value from their actions as they manifest cultural principles of decay and death, and simultaneously, the history of successive acts of rebirth. These objects, ail of them in a categorical sense, « cloth », are manufactured by women from fibrous plant materials. As « cloth » takes on greater physical durability, the object becomes a more precise recorder of history, documenting the power of cosmological phenoma (ahistorical time), and acting on and notating the socio-political dimensions of historical time. In Oceania, I argue that such « cloth », forms the basisfor the development of political stratification.
