La critique est un art difficile. Je venais de lire La France, histoire d'un peuple, et je tombe sur un compte rendu de cet ouvrage où je vois reprocher à M. André Ribard, son auteur, des préoccupations d'histoire sociale que le rédacteur du compte-rendu juge excessives et abusives. Or, ce qui me frappe, quant à moi, et ce que volontiers je reprocherais à M. Ribard, c'est qu'ayant raconté, d'une plume alerte, les vicissitudes politiques de la France, il se soit si peu soucié de les éclairer en recourant aux interprétations économiques qu'on est naturellement porté à attendre d'un livre publié aux E. S. I. Certes, dans son livre, il dénonce à maintes reprises la puissance de l'or, mais pas un mot sur cet or lui-même, ni sur la monnaie, ni sur les prix, leurs fluctuations, leur allure, ni non plus sur les salaires, leur courbe et leurs oscillations.
