Approximate Solution of the “Inverse Problem” of Boundary Layer Theory

Extract
Existing approximate formulae for the thickness of laminar and turbulent boundary layers are used to derive a method of calculating the free-stream velocity distribution corresponding to a given variation of shape parameter.
Thwaites has given the formula
for the momentum thickness of a laminar boundary layer with free-stream velocity u (x). This is the integral form of the empirical equation
