For many years, there have been conducting research (e.g., by Bergelson, Furstenberg, Kojman, Kubiś, Shelah, Szeptycki, Weiss) into sequentially compact spaces that are, in a sense, topological counterparts of some combinatorial theorems, for instance, Ramsey’s theorem for coloring graphs, Hindman’s finite sums theorem, and van der Waerden’s arithmetical progressions theorem. These spaces are defined with the aid of different kinds of convergences: IP-convergence, R-convergence, and ordinary convergence.

The first aim of this paper is to present a unified approach to these various types of convergences and spaces. Then, using this unified approach, we prove some general theorems about existence of the considered spaces and show that all results obtained so far in this subject can be derived from our theorems.

The second aim of this paper is to obtain new results about the specific types of these spaces. For instance, we construct a Hausdorff Hindman space that is not an $\mathcal {I}_{1/n}$-space and a Hausdorff differentially compact space that is not Hindman. Moreover, we compare Ramsey spaces with other types of spaces. For instance, we construct a Ramsey space that is not Hindman and a Hindman space that is not Ramsey.

The last aim of this paper is to provide a characterization that shows when there exists a space of one considered type that is not of the other kind. This characterization is expressed in purely combinatorial manner with the aid of the so-called Katětov order that has been extensively examined for many years so far.

This paper may interest the general audience of mathematicians as the results we obtain are on the intersection of topology, combinatorics, set theory, and number theory.

In this paper, the turnpike property is established for a nonconvex optimal control problem in discrete time. The functional is defined by the notion of the ideal convergence and can be considered as an analogue of the terminal functional defined over infinite-time horizon. The turnpike property states that every optimal solution converges to some unique optimal stationary point in the sense of ideal convergence if the ideal is invariant under translations. This kind of convergence generalizes, for example, statistical convergence and convergence with respect to logarithmic density zero sets.

We show, from a topological viewpoint, that most numbers are not normal in a strong sense. More precisely, the set of numbers $x \in (0,1]$ with the following property is comeager: for all integers $b\ge 2$ and $k\ge 1$ , the sequence of vectors made by the frequencies of all possibile strings of length k in the b-adic representation of x has a maximal subset of accumulation points, and each of them is the limit of a subsequence with an index set of nonzero asymptotic density. This extends and provides a streamlined proof of the main result given by Olsen (2004) in this Journal. We provide analogues in the context of analytic P-ideals and regular matrices.

Given a sequence $\varrho =(r_n)_n\in [0,1)$ tending to $1$, we consider the set ${\mathcal {U}}_A({\mathbb {D}},\varrho )$ of Abel universal functions consisting of holomorphic functions f in the open unit disk $\mathbb {D}$ such that for any compact set K included in the unit circle ${\mathbb {T}}$, different from ${\mathbb {T}}$, the set $\{z\mapsto f(r_n \cdot )\vert _K:n\in \mathbb {N}\}$ is dense in the space ${\mathcal {C}}(K)$ of continuous functions on K. It is known that the set ${\mathcal {U}}_A({\mathbb {D}},\varrho )$ is residual in $H(\mathbb {D})$. We prove that it does not coincide with any other classical sets of universal holomorphic functions. In particular, it is not even comparable in terms of inclusion to the set of holomorphic functions whose Taylor polynomials at $0$ are dense in ${\mathcal {C}}(K)$ for any compact set $K\subset {\mathbb {T}}$ different from ${\mathbb {T}}$. Moreover, we prove that the class of Abel universal functions is not invariant under the action of the differentiation operator. Finally, an Abel universal function can be viewed as a universal vector of the sequence of dilation operators $T_n:f\mapsto f(r_n \cdot )$ acting on $H(\mathbb {D})$. Thus, we study the dynamical properties of $(T_n)_n$ such as the multiuniversality and the (common) frequent universality. All the proofs are constructive.

Let $\Phi $ be a correspondence from a normed vector space X into itself, let $u: X\to \mathbf {R}$ be a function, and let $\mathcal {I}$ be an ideal on $\mathbf {N}$ . In addition, assume that the restriction of u on the fixed points of $\Phi $ has a unique maximizer $\eta ^\star $ . Then, we consider feasible paths $(x_0,x_1,\ldots )$ with values in X such that $x_{n+1} \in \Phi (x_n)$ , for all $n\ge 0$ . Under certain additional conditions, we prove the following turnpike result: every feasible path $(x_0,x_1,\ldots )$ which maximizes the smallest $\mathcal {I}$ -cluster point of the sequence $(u(x_0),u(x_1),\ldots )$ is necessarily $\mathcal {I}$ -convergent to $\eta ^\star $ .

We provide examples that, on the one hand, justify the hypotheses of our result and, on the other hand, prove that we are including new cases which were previously not considered in the related literature.

For an infinite Toeplitz matrix T with nonnegative real entries we find the conditions under which the equation $\boldsymbol {x}=T\boldsymbol {x}$ , where $\boldsymbol {x}$ is an infinite vector column, has a nontrivial bounded positive solution. The problem studied in this paper is associated with the asymptotic behaviour of convolution-type recurrence relations and can be applied to problems arising in the theory of stochastic processes and other areas.

Zacharias [‘Proof of a conjecture of Merca on an average of square roots’, College Math. J.49 (2018), 342–345] proved Merca’s conjecture that the arithmetic means $(1/n)\sum _{k=1}^{n}\sqrt{k}$ of the square roots of the first $n$ integers have the same floor values as a simple approximating sequence. We prove a similar result for the arithmetic means $(1/n)\sum _{k=1}^{n}\sqrt[3]{k}$ of the cube roots of the first $n$ integers.

We use properties of the gamma function to estimate the products $\prod _{k=1}^{n}(4k-3)/4k$ and $\prod _{k=1}^{n}(4k-1)/4k$, motivated by the work of Chen and Qi [‘Completely monotonic function associated with the gamma function and proof of Wallis’ inequality’, Tamkang J. Math.36(4) (2005), 303–307] and Mortici et al. [‘Completely monotonic functions and inequalities associated to some ratio of gamma function’, Appl. Math. Comput.240 (2014), 168–174].

The Toda equation and its variants are studied in the filed of integrable systems. One particularly generalized time discretisation of the Toda equation is known as the discrete hungry Toda (dhToda) equation, which has two main variants referred to as the dhTodaI equation and dhTodaII equation. The dhToda equations have both been shown to be applicable to the computation of eigenvalues of totally nonnegative (TN) matrices, which are matrices without negative minors. The dhTodaI equation has been investigated with respect to the properties of integrable systems, but the dhTodaII equation has not. Explicit solutions using determinants and matrix representations called Lax pairs are often considered as symbolic properties of discrete integrable systems. In this paper, we clarify the determinant solution and Lax pair of the dhTodaII equation by focusing on an infinite sequence. We show that the resulting determinant solution firmly covers the general solution to the dhTodaII equation, and provide an asymptotic analysis of the general solution as discrete-time variable goes to infinity.

In this paper we improve the inequalities obtained by Chen in 2009 for the Euler–Mascheroni constant.

We analyse the mask associated with the $2n$-point interpolatory Dubuc–Deslauriers subdivision scheme $S_{a^{[n]}}$. Sharp bounds are presented for the magnitude of the coefficients $a^{[n]}_{2i-1}$ of the mask. For scales $i \in [1,\sqrt{n}]$ it is shown that $|a^{[n]}_{2i-1}|$ is comparable to $i^{-1}$, and for larger power scales, exponentially decaying bounds are obtained. Using our bounds, we may precisely analyse the summability of the mask as a function of $n$ by identifying which coefficients of the mask contribute to the essential behaviour in $n$, recovering and refining the recent result of Deng–Hormann–Zhang that the operator norm of $S_{a^{[n]}}$ on $\ell ^\infty $ grows logarithmically in $n$.

Conditions are established for the sequence of differences $\{a_n-a_{n-1}\}$ of a bounded sequence $\{a_n\}$ of complex terms to converge to zero when a certain linear nonhomogeneous difference expression of the form $k_0 a_n+k_1a_{n-1}+\cdots +k_na_0$tends to zero as$n\to \infty .$

Many generalizations of continued fractions, where the reciprocal function has been replaced by a more general function, have been studied, and it is often asked whether such generalized expansions can have nice properties. For instance, we might ask that algebraic numbers of a given degree have periodic expansions, just as quadratic irrationals have periodic continued fractions; or we might ask that familiar transcendental constants such as e or π have periodic or terminating expansions. In this paper, we show that there exist such generalized continued function expansions with essentially any desired behaviour.

On the basis of the Karlin and McGregor result, which states that the transition probability functions of a birth and death process can be expressed via the introduction of an orthogonal polynomial system and a spectral measure, we investigate in this paper how the Laplace transforms and the distributions of different transient characteristics related to excursions of a birth and death process can be expressed by means of the basic orthogonal polynomial system and the spectral measure. This allows us in particular to give a probabilistic interpretation of the series introduced by Stieltjes to study the convergence of the fundamental continued fraction associated with the system. Throughout the paper, we pay special attention to the case when the birth and death process is ergodic. Under the assumption that the spectrum of the spectral measure is discrete, we show how the distributions of different random variables associated with excursions depend on the fundamental continued fraction, the orthogonal polynomial system and the spectral measure.

The spectral factorization problem, i.e. the problem of obtaining all possible MA representations of a process with given autocovariance function, is considered for univariate, d-periodic MA(1) (equivalently, 1-dependent in the second-order sense) processes. The solutions are provided explicitly, and their invertibility properties are investigated. A characterization, in terms of their autocovariance functions, of non-invertible d-periodic 1-dependent processes, extending to the periodic case the traditional unit root condition, is provided.

We study conditions for the existence of non-trivial quasi-stationary distributions for the birth-and-death chain with 0 as absorbing state. We reduce our problem to a continued fractions one that can be solved by using extensions of classical results of this theory. We also prove that there exist normalized quasi-stationary distributions if and only if 0 is geometrically absorbing.

In a manuscript discovered in 1976 by George E. Andrews, Ramanujan states a formula for a certain continued fraction, without proof. In this paper we establish formulae for the convergents to the continued fraction, from which Ramanujan's result is easily deduced.
