EALE: European Association of Law and Economics. Founded in 1984, and the oldest of the several academic associations devoted to the economic analysis of law. The European Association of Law and Economics was founded under the initiative of Göran Skogh, who developed the idea while he was a visiting professor of law and economics at the University of California at Santa Barbara. The association was created to respond to the increasing institutional importance of the economic analysis of law in Europe and to provide assistance to law and economics scholars and bring their scholarship to a wider audience, including policymakers, legislators, and judges. The Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation provided the initial funding for the development of the association. The first annual conference of the association was held from March 19 to 21, 1984, in Lund, Sweden. Since 1985 the conferences have become an important forum for the exchange of research findings and ideas, and have been held on an annually rotating basis. The presidents of the association are elected periodically, and have been Göran Skogh (1984–7),Roger Van den Bergh (1987–2001),Gerrit De Geest (2001–4), Hans-Bernd Schäfer (2004–7), Roger Bowles (2007–8), Eli Salzberger (2008–2011), and Bruno Deffains (2011–14).
