2 - Political Elites and the Strategic Use of Anger

Summary

This chapter examines whether political elites strategically elicit anger in the mass public. Using transcripts of TV shows that aired on Fox News and MSNBC from 1999 to 2016, I show that elites do seek to elicit anger in the mass public. Moreover, I show that they do this at strategic points during the campaign season. I also replicate these findings by studying candidates’ use of Twitter in both primary and general elections.
