Summary
ABSTRACT. Having chosen to ignore the sea, Safavid Persia, unlike the neighbouring Ottoman Empire, was progressively excluded from the commercial routes and soon in a critical position to battle against the Ottomans led by Selim I. Another political system, as shown by Zanzibar, could have been a clear option. The Sublime Porte privileged its fight against the Habsburgs and also deprived itself of a naval instrument that otherwise would have let it maintain trade in the Indian Ocean, to the considerable benefit of notably the Dutch. The Dutch then dominated this India trade by inserting it in a global commercial network that allowed them to create monopolies in the most profitable sectors and, using its accomplished art of speculation, set the tempo on pricing.
