Summary

The archbishop's mandate to the bishop of Durham

Willelmus, permissione divina Eboracensis archiepiscopus Angliae primas venerabili in Christo patri Domino Richardo, Dei gratia Dunelmensi episcopo etc., suisve vicario generali in spiritualibus seu locum tenenti etc. Mandatum regium recepimus in haec verba:

Edwardus, Dei gratia rex Angliae, dominus Hiberniae et dux Aquitaniae, venerabili in Christo patri W[illelmo], eadem gratia archiepiscopo Eboracensi, Angliae primati, salutem. Cum nuper, assumpto passagio nostro ad partes exteras, de assensu praelatorum, procerum, et magnatum, cleri ac populi, pro arduis negotiis nos et statum nostrum, ac salvationem et honorem sanctae Ecclesiae Anglicanae et dicti regni contingentibus, volentes ut pax et quies dictorum ecclesiae et regni, in absentia nostra, inviolabiliter observaretur, et, ea de causa vobiscum habere colloquium et tractatum, vobis, in fide et dilectione quibus nobis tenemini, firmiter iniungendo, mandaverimus, quod pensatis tanta nostrum et dicti regni arduitate, et periculis imminentibus, absque excusatione quacunque, vos apud Northampton, in crastino Sancti Iacobi Apostoli iam praeterito [26 July 1338] personaliter interessetis, cum Edwardo duce Cornubiae et comite Cestriae, filio nostro carissimo, quern custodem dicti regni nostri constituimus, et cum ceteris praelatis, proceribus et magnatibus praedictis, super dictis negotiis tractaturi, vestrumque consilium impensuri. Et quia negotia praedicta salvationem dicti regni et ecclesiae sanctae, ac universorum et singulorum ipsius regni specialiter concernebant, mandaverimus vos, rogantes quod praemuniretis decanum et capitulum ecclesiae vestrae Sancti Petri Eboracensis ac archidiaconos, totumque clerum vestrae dioecesis, quod iidem decanus et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis, ac dictum capitulum per unum, idemque clerus per duos procuratores idoneos, plenam et sufficientem potestatem ab ipso capitulo et clero habentes, dictis die et loco interessent ad tractandum et consulendum super praemissis, una vobiscum et aliis per nos illuc tune mittendis, et ad consentiendum his quae tune ibidem, pro communi defensione et utilitate, divina favente dementia, contingeret ordinari.
