2 - The ‘Lives’ of Mary Magdalene
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 11 November 2022
Summary
The three Marys combined by Gregory the Great – the penitent sinner, the Mary who sat contemplatively at the feet of Jesus, and the Mary who was commissioned to preach the Gospel – became the key themes of the ‘Lives’ (‘Vitae’) of Mary Magdalene that were produced during the medieval period. While the three Marys interwove with each other in the Lives, each of the Lives arose from a specific take on the primary relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus.
