Summary
This chapter introduces the economic frame of technical and allocative efficiency, which underpins how economics is used to inform healthcare decision-making, and then reviews ethical issues associated with this contemporary dominant economic frame for priority setting. It develops a Christian ethic of healthcare resource allocation and funding, specifically identifying a Christian rather than a utilitarian basis for resource allocation, arguing that ‘responsible stewardship’ is an alternative frame that should underpin public resource allocation in healthcare.
