Summary

In Chapter 8, I apply the theory to relational trajectories and delineate how the integrated theoretical processes pose considerations for health outcomes including relational and health and illness changes over time. I provide illustrations of health and illness trajectories where close relationships help people successfully find meaning and purpose despite enormous medical challenges and illness-related vulnerabilities. To that end, I show how integrated pathways can promote resilience and relational thriving in the face of adversity. I show how integrated pathways similarly explain other relationships where illness serves as a catalyst for relational decline, for shattered assumptions, or for decreased ability to navigate the relationship instability, disorientation, and disillusionment of the ongoing illness trajectory. I also discuss interdisciplinary and life-span implications of the integrated theory.
